  1. I had to put him in the numero Uno spot. PoD was a revelation for me. It was one of those records that I didn't really "get" my first couple times through. At the time, however, some intense and difficult things were going on in my life. Each time I went back to PoD during this time, I heard more and more emotion peeking through. Tension, frustration, sadness, all things I could and can relate to. Through Hill's advanced harmonic sense and sometimes rhythmic and tonal ambiguity, he grabs me and shows me what's going on in his head; his mood and attitude, dark, uncertainty. From PoD I scored a copy of Black Fire from Ebay and that was like being smacked with a golf club to the face. SO intense. Not to discount any other piano players like Herbie or Sonny Clark, Wynton Kelly, Hill's output is what I've heard the most of recently and I relate his music to my own personal struggles. Number One for me. B)
  2. A close-up of the center of an LP as the grooves come closer together? either that or..... " The wheels on the bus go round' an round' "
  3. My favorite cheeses are sharp provolone, cheddar, brie, muenster, colby jack, monterey jack and Sliced american cheese is my least favorite 'cause it leaves a ghastly aftertaste in my mouth.

    Hank Mobley

Hank was a musician's musician. Very well rounded. Distinct for me in his phrasing, melodic ideas, articulation. You either hear it or you don't. If you do, great, if not fine........but don't give up, you'll come around. Oh, yeah, the Blackhawk sides are definitely not the best show off material for Hank. Ya really need do dig into 'No Room For Squares', 'Dippin' , 'Soul Station', to really scrape the heart of what he's all about. 'Straight No Filter' isn't too shabby either. Oh, yeah, this might get me flamed to smithereens but I've often found Sonny Rollins' playing to be plain boring.
  5. Ummmm.....er.....uh not me! I swear!
  6. YUMMY Anyone see her Maxim spread earlier this year? Yowzaa!!
  7. Funny you should mention this, I saw this at a local Tower today and passed it up. It certainly looks VERY intriguing and the lineup is top notch. I certainly would love to hear Tolliver in this setting. Next time I guess.
  8. This board needs an 'Aric'
  9. That'll DEFINITELY bring all sorts of wacko-loons into Organissimo turf. I'll bring the beer and popcorn!
  10. Thanks everybody! slsmcgrew, I have my heart set on either middle or elementary level instrumental music. My instrumental student teaching placement last Spring was very intense and very fulfilling. I enjoy working with kids at that age, and even though my primary instrument is trumpet, I like being able to pick up any secondary instrument and make it 'work'. It's fun. The advice and guidance from my cooperating teacher and supervisor was indespensable. They both helped me a great deal. I don't feel ready to tackle high school duties just yet. It's a mighty load that I'd rather not attempt right now because I'm still discovering who I am and what I want to do besides teach. Bill
  11. Happy Birthday CJ! Like pryan said, nice to see some other whippersnappers like ourselves here in the midst of a buncha fogeys -Bill
  12. My mom just called me to say that my teaching certification came in the mail a little while ago!! I'm finally a certified music teacher in Pennsylvania!!! Now all I gotta do is find that first REAL job!! Any other music teachers here who can share their experiences? I know there were a few on the old BNBB but I'm not sure if they trickled over here.
  13. I enjoy reading about the evolution of others' musical tastes, if that makes any sense. There are artists that I've listened to for several years whose work I'm sure others are not familiar with. On the flip side, there also many, many artists whose work I'm not familiar with that other people could introduce me to. Here's a few people whose work I'm just starting to delve into... Yusef Lateef - his output seems to be very varied, rooted in hard bop with some world music tinges and some explorative qualities. Having played oboe in my double reeds woodwind class I know how difficult jazz playing could be on this instrument. I'm enjoying 'Eastern Sounds' 'The Centaur and the Phoenix' and 'Live at Pep's' Fine stuff. Joe Farrell - His work on Dance with Death prompted me to pick up his Sonic Text. I like it. Great cast of musicians, great playing all round. I dig the fusion elements. I would like to get more of his work, both as a leader and sideman. John Patton - His playing on Blues for Lou KILLS and I recently picked up Boogaloo, which has seen time in my changer a lot recently. I still need to pick up his other available BNs. So what has caught your ear lately, making you think, "I need to listen to more of THIS"? :rsmile:
  14. RE: The Simpsons Third Season Excellent. The Family Guy First Set has been in my DVD for the past week.....Hilarious show....kind of a cross between The Simpsons and South Park. Totally insane. I wish it was still on and wonder why Fox pulled it. I wouldn't be surprised if it received complaints, as it demolished anything and everything for the hell of it.
  15. Not really a classic, but I'd also like to see Quantum Leap, w/ Dean Stockwell and Scott Bakula appear on DVD at some point. It's currently on Sci Fi though so it'll probably be a while before this happens.
  16. I'm still waiting for the #&*@@ third season of The Simpsons'!!
  17. How about something from these: Mahavishnu Orchestra - The Inner Mounting Flame Yusef Lateef - Eastern Sounds John Swana - Tug of War Lee Morgan - Last Session Joe Farell - Moon Germs
  18. Coming out in the next week or so. Should be good. TERELL STAFFORD, TRUMPET MULGREW MILLER, PIANO DERRICK HODGE, BASS DANA HALL, DRUMS DICK OATTS, SAXOPHONE
  19. That's probably gonna be my next pickup. I'm looking forward to hearing more Dupree Bolton as well.
  20. I picked up this today. Land kicks AZZZZ...I love that tone of his!! Sheldon ain't no slouch either. I'll have to pick up more of these Counce sides, they're pretty hip.
  21. I remember this fondly when my parents first got cable many years ago. All I remember are locker jokes, Barf Burgers, and a red-headed mother whose significance I can't quite remember. I think Ross was her son and ........damn, I can't remember! I'd love to see a few seasons of this on DVD.

    Hank Mobley

Out of curiousity, what is your take on Blue Mitchell? The reason I ask is because I tend to put Hank and Blue in the same ballpark; great composers, language masters, but not real innovators. Another thing, I try not to do too much critical comparisons between players. Instead of hearing the things in Hank's playing that other people did better, hear them for what they are. ( or something like that ) I guess it's kinda hard to explain and it's all just personal preferences.
  23. I haven't figured it out yet. At 25, I'm still learning how to live in the present. Something I often have trouble with.
