  1. Ain't that the truth! Wow, I can't believe the Curtis Amy got the green light--that's the kind of set Mosaic Select was made for. But I'm very psyched about a number of these releases (Eldridge, Mulligan, and the Pearson, too).
  2. For me, the bonus tracks are a lot less interesting; they're shorter and the playing's not quite as inspired as the original *Fiddler* lp cuts. Of course, that may be because I keep wanting to replay the original 8 cuts...
  3. Adderley's *Fiddler on the Roof*: anyone check this out? I picked this up last week, but it wasn't a top priority because I received the Weston Mosaic and the new Keith Jarrett, too. But I played the Cannonball last night, and it was pretty hot. EXCELLENT playing all around (Charles Lloyd, in particular), and the arrangements were not schmaltzy at all (an irrational fear, perhaps, but I'm not a huge fan of the musical). Anyway, I give it a hearty recommendation, and wonder what others think. john
  4. I have no real basis for saying this (i.e., no e-mails from Bob Belden-- , but I wouldn't be surprised if the Jack Johnson box showed up in October. If not then, Sony would probably have to wait until 2004 (since big releases like this don't usually seem to come out to close to Christmas, right?)
  5. SS1, Maybe you could let us know what you think of *Boogaloo.* I haven't spun it in a while, but my memory is that it was a bit disappointing. Maybe I just need to give it a fresh listen.
  6. *Bohemia* IS great, but it's one of the most Lo-Fi titles in the OJC catalogue, IMHO. By the way, Airborne Express just delivered the Weston box, so I gotta run...
  7. Chances are, if you've heard any Duke Ellington, then you've heard Hodges (you may know this already). Hodges had a long tenure with Ellington's band, and this set includes some Ellingtonia, and much that's not. All of it is small-group jazz at its best. If you want a taste of something similar (without spending so much $$$), pick up an Impulse CD called *Everybody Knows Johnny Hodges.* It should cost you about 12 bucks and, if you like it, you'll *really* dig the Mosaic. john
  8. Just for the sake of argument, I'd go for the Hodges. It's by far my most-listened to Mosaic. A terrific box that many others have praised in other threads (some recently). john
  9. Yeah, I'm pretty stoked about the upcoming schedule of Verve reissues. In addition to these titles, the weeks after will bring us 2 others that I'll pick up the day they're issued *Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges* *The Easy Way* by Jimmy Giuffre
  10. Picking up *The Spoiler* was a good choice, if only because it's pretty hard to find these days. I'd cast a vote for *Minton's*--still one of my favorite Stanley T. sessions. john
  11. Point taken, Bataki.
  12. The Holy Trinity of Piano: Powell, Evans, and Jarrett. Hmmmm... Can't forget about Monk, right? Or McCoy Tyner? Or Herbie? (or a handful of others)
