Steve Coleman Article In NYT
HutchFan replied to JSngry's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Hold on a second. Iyer didn't couch his statement about the importance of Coleman in absolute terms. It was a reference to how much Coleman meant to Iyer, not an attempt to diminish the importance of Coltrane. Look at the quote: Vijay Iyer, who once declared in JazzTimes magazine that Mr. Coleman was, for him, as important a figure as John Coltrane, someone who “has contributed an equal amount to the history of the music.” I don't have any problem with that statement because he's seems to be making it from a personal point of view, not as some sort of music historian. -
Anyone else looking forward to watching the NFL draft tonight? I'm hoping that the Falcons draft someone who can actually put pressure on opposing teams' quarterbacks. (What a novel concept!) Last year, we had the second fewest sacks and the worst 3rd down defense in the league. Ugh. I'm also interested in seeing who selects Todd Gurley. Since I went to the University of Georgia and follow the football program, I'd like to see him land with a good team.

Listening to this right now... "Pulse" from Sam Rivers' album Waves: https://youtu.be/0a4eoJv2jaI

Escaped from the office for a while at lunchtime and found this LP at a local shop: Clean as a whistle. 5 bucks.
-
Just picked this up from the library: A Power Stronger Than Itself: The AACM and American Experimental Music by George E. Lewis
-
Earlier this evening, I listened to Lew Tabackin's Rites of Pan, an Inner City LP:
-
Yeah. Good stuff. The Mark Weinstein LP above reminded me of a more recent Weinstein recording that I've enjoyed: It's not really "avant-garde" -- but it does seem to echo that late-60's Blue Note "inside out" vibe. (Think Bobby Hutcherson or Andrew Hill.) The pianist, Aruán Ortiz, is especially impressive.

Just started reading this:
-
It's O.K. Not on the same level as Hill Country Suite though. IMHO, of course.
-
Pulled this LP out tonight after seeing it discussed on another thread:
-
I agree 100% percent re: Jones' "Hill Country Suite." It's a gem. Plus, how can you go wrong with a George Mraz & Freddie Waits rhythm section?

Keith Jarrett - El Juicio (The Judgment) Lee Konitz Nonet - Yes, Yes, Nonet

Dansere for me. Great album. Such a finely tuned quartet - all their names should be on the cover I've been listening to: Barney Kessel - Soaring A sterling, swinging trio record with Monty Budwig (b) and Jake Hanna (d)
-
Oh yeah, I'm getting that!

Oregon - In Concert
-
Jan Garbarek / Bobo Stenson Quartet - Dansere Lovely. I listened to Witchi-Tai-To earlier today. Not sure which one I like better; they're so different.
-
Yeah. He's fantastic. Didn't know that. Thanks for the heads-up.

2nd & Charles is a chain. The Athens location is on Atlanta Highway in a shopping center next to Hobby Lobby. There's also a 2nd & Charles in Kennesaw, near Town Center Mall. From what I can gather, 2nd & Charles seems to be trying to copy the business model of McKay's -- the great book & music stores in Chattanooga & Knoxville. But my guess is that 2nd & Charles won't make it very long. The pricing is all over the place; some of the merchandise is terribly over-priced and some of it is way under-priced. Plus, the two stores that I've seen have a lot of shoddy/worthless merchandise -- especially the vinyl. Tons of crap. You have to dig through a lot of dreck to find much that's worthwhile. Honestly, I felt lucky to come away with the Gary Burton & Marc Cary CDs. Nothing else was even remotely interesting. That said, I only paid $4 each for the CDs -- so I can't complain. And my son found a clean Quicksilver Messenger Service Anthology double LP set for $10. So it's worth popping in to see what you might find. Just don't expect anything anywhere near the quality of the Atlanta Wuxtry or Wax n Facts.

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
HutchFan replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Listened to this last night and again today: Mosaic Select: Dave Liebman & Richie Beirach I'm especially digging the Lookout Farm tracks (Disc 1). -
Wuxtry? The Trio da Paz disc was from Wuxtry. The others were from 2nd & Charles. IMHO, Wuxtry in Athens has gotten sorta pricey. The ATL Wuxtry store has a much better selection and better pricing too.

I found these while kicking around in Athens, GA last weekend:
-
Chuck, You probably know this already, but that Pee Wee Russell Dot LP is also included in this not-difficult-to-find Dedication Series/"Salute to Newport" set: It'd likely be easier to find than the original Dot LP.

Found these today at a local shop: Jan Garbarek - Bobo Stenson Quartet - Dansere LP - Still sealed! David Murray Octet - New Life CD - This has always been my favorite David Murray Octet record. When I was college, I made a cassette tape copy of this music. (My school's library had the LP.) The tape's long gone, of course. Nice to finally have it on CD.
