I was surprised but I guess he just sat in with the band for that tune.

I need some good Dexter Gordon Recommendations
JCR1992 replied to JCR1992's topic in Recommendations
I checked out the apartment and a day in Copenhagen so far. I love how both sound! I'm about to check out the rest. The "Dexter Plays Hot and Cool" CD is in my Amazon wishlist. The tunes I've heard from that are phenomenal and better than his "Daddy Plays the Horn" album which I enjoy. But I'll check out the other album as well. Thank you! -
Yes I know about all of those. I was wondering if he performed anything like "Walkin'" or "My Funny Valentine". Things like that. I just discovered a Round Midnight recording from 1968 with Chick Corea AND Wynton Kelly both on Electric Pianos.

I'm a big Dexter Gordon fan I have 15 of his CD's in my collection so far. Mostly all his Blue Note and Columbia albums. I do have some oddballs like Live at the Both/and Club San Francisco, Daddy Plays the Horn, and American Classic. I see he has many albums released on Steeplechase. Which are the good ones and which ones also have good quality? Some of the samples I've listened to sound like they aren't remastered or were either originally bootlegs. Also, any other suggestions to any music he is featured on would be great. Thanks!

Did Miles perform this with any other bands post 1970? Michael Henderson and Miles toy with the theme on Side 3 of Agharta. I read about that in Miles Beyond but I don't catch them playing it all. That's interesting. Was there any other tunes from the 50's or 60's he talked about playing? Even if it was just a warm up tune.
-
Yeah it might not of been where he wanted to go whether that was ego and/or his ambition to keep moving further but its still surprising to hear an electric version of this whether Miles plays on it or not. He could have chosen for them to play "Directions" or something else that his band was used to playing at that time.

Ok is this real?! I don't know what to make of this! I never knew this existed at all!
-
I don't think so because they didn't include the Carnegie Hall concert at all.
-
Agreed or even Cuscuna. Just somebody that can look through the vaults and see if this exists.

Isn't it commonly thought that the "unknown title" that was performed with Gil's orchestra, was... "Falling Water" (take 4) - 3:45 "Falling Water" (take 6) - 4:25 "Falling Water" (take 8) - 4:17 "Falling Water" (take 9) - 4:23 ...which is found in four (4) studio takes on the Miles & Gil Evans box (recorded in 1968, as best I'm recalling). I know I've read/heard that a number of times, and it may even be mentioned in the liners to the Miles & Gil box too (where it was also speculation, though a pretty educated guess). Was this concert covered any in Downbeat around that time? Not that anyone (then) could have had any idea what to call that unknown tune. That is a good observation I never even thought of putting the two together. It makes perfect sense that that would be the unknown tune! Is the "Antigua" they're referring to the same tune Shorter did on "Moto Grosso Feio"?

Would be amazing to hear this. My recollection is that whenever Miles played "Nefertiti" live, it was with individual solos - i.e., not like the studio version. He performs "Nefertiti" on the Vol.2 bootleg correct? Still haven't bought Vol.2 or 3 yet. I thought about that as well. My only hope is that Columbia is planning some type of release and possibly it was on the college radio station just like Coltrane's Temple University concert.
-
Wow!! If this ever is released by Columbia I'd be sure to get this. I'd love to here "Nefertiti" with an Orchestra continuously repeating the chorus like Miles and Wayne did on the original LP! I wonder if Miles was doing his long medley of songs since this concert consisted of an Orchestra as well. Also the Aretha Franklin cover is very intriguing to me. I never knew he performed it let alone live and/or with Gil. Great info thank you so much!

I'm wondering about a concert from 1968 with the 2nd Great Quintet and a Gil Evans orchestra. Miles talks about it in his book and I was wondering has any bootlegs ever surfaced of this recording. If I remember correctly Miles said Columbia recorded it and it was in their vaults. I would love to hear it and see how he sounded live in such a transitional year, especially with an Orchestra led by Gil. Any info on it please let me know. I hope I'm posting this in the correct area!

The ballad is called "Next TIme I Fall in Love" one of my favorite Horace tunes as well!
-
Agreed on "Roccus". There are also two quartet (as, p, b, d) takes of this tune on the Lou Donaldson "Quartet, Quintet, Sextet" album. Yes I've heard one of the takes from the Lou Donaldson recordings. I'm not sure which one it was but it was pretty good.
-
So the tunes on this album seem like they have better instrumentation than the United States of Mind Trilogy but the same cheesy lyrics. Is that a correct assumption? Does every tune have a vocal performance?
-
Ok great. I'm hoping now that Horace has passed maybe all the music on his label will be released. I have the Natives are Restless CD but just under the title Re-Entry. It says its through his Silveto Label. I enjoyed that CD very much. Yeah I'm not too much of a fan of Horace's preachy lyrics. I thought the best albums of his with vocals were Rockin' with Rachmaninoff, It's Got to be Funky, and Pencil Packin' Papa. Thank you for the insight on the best albums on his label!

Thank you Paul!

Hello everyone I'm new to this site. Horace Silver was my favorite pianist so i was very saddened to hear about his passing. I have nearly every album of his except for the recordings on his own label, Silveto. I was wondering if anybody could give feedback about how those albums were. I believe he released 5 or 6 on his record label. I'm only 22 years old so much of this great music was before my time. As for unique tracks by Horace, I love "I Want You" from his Hardbop Grandpop album. I am also a big fan of "Roccus" from the Lee Morgan Indeed album. I would have loved for him to record this with his own quintet. Another tune that has always been one of my favorites is "Down and Out" on the You Gotta Take A Little Love LP. I'm kind of surprised that tune is not brought up more.
