  1. Om was the first Coltrane recording I ever listened to, because that's what was available that day at the public library. Om and the Village Vanguard Again album. I guess the more conventional gems were already checked out/stolen. Om was just too weird for this 8th grader. As a result, didn't listen to any Coltrane-led dates for many years thereafter. Probably not until Blue Train and My Favorite Things in college. This may have been the initial catlayst for my continuing (though now receding a bit) aversion to late period Coltrane.
  2. I haven't yet received a similar email for my backordered (and OOP) titles. I did just get a "buy 4 get 1 free" promotion notice that is in-store only and limited to CD/DVD stock on hand. Now through Sept 4. Vulture circling time?
  3. I guess I have another week at least for confirmation of a 63xx order placed August 1. Patience. I'm little concerned that today's random listing of what's included in the sale excludes Ugetsu, Lush Life, Traneing In, Dolphy @ the Five Spot, Explorations, Misterioso, Plays Duke Ellington. Hopefully the copies of these titles in my unconfirmed order will arrive by mid-September. ...Patience. Anyone else think that "Your order is at the warehouse [...and therefore we in customer service don't know anything about it]" is equivalent to "the check is in the mail" or perhaps just "buh-bye now"?
  4. My order, #5707, placed late July 13, finally arrived. It left Sacramento on July 29, got to the east coast (Hagerstown MD) on Aug 3, and was delivered today (Aug 4). I expect a second order not to arrive until September... Now, what to listen to first...
  5. Red Sox nation needs to send a lovely gift to Eric Wedge and to Fausto Carmona. Da Sawx shudda been swept at home by the lowly Tribe! Doug Mirabelli is not the answer (except perhaps to the question who would finish last in a foot race between Hafner, Thome, and Mirabelli). And is David Wells done? That guy owns the Tribe, but he was baruttal the other night...
  6. Just read in their August brochure that Mosaic is offering 10% savings on the 12 sets listed below. Goal is "to ease the backlog in inventory". I guess this is roughly equivalent to free shipping. 170 Classic Capitol Jazz Sessions 183 Complete Bitches Brew 197 Parlan 206 Condon Mob 207 Pass 208 Stitt 211 Beiderbecke, Trumbauer, Teagarden 213 Venuti Lang 214 Vaughan 215 Donaldson 217 Prima Manone 219 Berigan
  7. I'm still waiting, yeah, yeah, yeah. My order (#5707) was placed July 13, and confirmed July 14 with an advertised ship date of July 18. Haven't received any messages about tracking numbers or actual shipping. Looks like I'll be waiting a bit longer... Did everyone that has received merchandise get a tracking number beforehand?
  8. up Any intelligence on Joe's schedule for the Fall? I'm likely out that way in late September/early October.
  9. The coupons can be applied to this Impulse sale. Initially, I was underwhelmed by what was on sale. Key is to scroll through everything (even if you've sorted by price, because the sorting is still by list price). I ordered Hubbard- The Body & The Soul, Haynes- Out of the Afternoon, Rollin- Alfie, along with Blakey- Three Blind Mice Vol 2 and Donaldson- Good Gracious. The latter two are special order and not on sale (listed at $11.99). They likely won't have these, but it helps get my bag over $50 so that I can apply the following $10 coupon. If past performance is any indication, I will have to wait awhile (with the Impulses in hand) as they figure out they have neither of the Blue Notes, but then still apply the full coupon to the remaining $29.97 of merchandise. Hopefully. 74TN5F6 $10 off $50, expires July 16
  10. I received a similar confirmation, indicating that all 44 titles I ordered will go out on Tuesday July 18. I placed my order late Thursday (July 13) evening.
  11. Familiar pattern for me. Learn of this a bit later than the hording masses. Place a large order (44 titles). Expect to receive about 60% of them (recalling J&R, Tower Blue Note, and other big sales). And will be very happy with whichever ones actually show up! CDUniverse does have pre-orders available for a few of these titles coming out as RVGs (Oliver Nelson Screamin' the Blues is the one title I recall). As always, thanks for alerting us to this buying opportunity.
  12. Looks like True Blue Music is looking to clear out their inventory of the AEC box, priced at $69.98 True Blue
  13. I just ordered the Moncur and Tolliver as well (already enjoy the Weston, Reece, and Pullen).

    Hank Jones...

nice photo when does the caption contest for this start?
  15. Sadly, opting out does not stop all of the unsolicited credit card offers--only those coming from outfits that rent these lists. Your alma mater(s) and even some charitities you support will still send you them. If you've attended (however briefly) more than one college/university in your life, you'll still get several such offers. In addition, American Express and Discover apparently don't use these lists because I continue to receive several offers from them. Most recent one was Discover offering an airline miles card. Sheesh. The opt out list does reduce the number of such offers, but does not stop them completely.
  16. I'm no longer getting the "system maintenance" message. Page doesn't load at all. Oh well. Is CD Universe the next best US alternative for BN midlines (RVGs etc)?
  17. Careful what you wish for. Call all those things on superstar LeBron, and then you gotta call all the hacking and bodying that that great Detroit D gets away with. LeBron may be built like a tight end (and travel, and use his off hand, and actually live up to all of the hype), but that doesn't mean he should be bodied like a tight end. If he was smaller like Rip or Gilbert Arenas, ant still attacking the rim, he'd be at the line even more. I say the hand to hand combat, on both sides, pretty much balances out. And Rip needs a few more flopping lessons from Bill Laimbeer. Those were pretty sad last night...
  18. Give me a break. Every scorer in the NBA travels like crazy. Refs want to see the amazing finish and don't look at any footwork, and they haven't been for decades. It's not just LeBron. Kobe, Arenas, Rip, Iverson, beloved M Jordan (as much as LeBron if not more), Ewing, ...
  19. Have and enjoy the Blue Note box and Love Gloom... Does anyone have discographical details and/or opinions about the Monk/Nichols Savoy recording M & N? Finally, anyone have suggested venues for nicely priced Herbie Nichols Project Soul Notes? Thanks
  20. James Blunt has come so far, so quickly. Apparently only Madonna is more noteworthy among Warner Music artists....
  21. If I could swing back to the music... Is the Gil release a CD issue of the contents of Pacific Standard Time which Scott Yanow tells me includes New Bottles, Old Wine and Great Jazz Standards, originally on World Pacific? Or are these the Pacific Jazz titles Cannonball Adderley and Gil Evans and America's #1 Arranger. Or are these a bunch of new titles for old recordings. Please educate me.
  22. Destination Out, Capuchin Swing, Bluesnik, Vertigo, Action, 4,5,6 to start with. definitely need to play "Poor Eric", and Dynasty, and...
  23. You may also want to check out Daedalus Books and Music. They have a lot of Naxos titles (jazz and classical) in the $1.98 - $6.95 range. Daedalus
  24. My J.J. Johnson set (#4412) arrived on Wednesday. A number of comments, several of which have been made before, but are worth repeating. 1. Thanks for the running low alert. This community, my friend, is quite an Organ-i-zation (best pronounced with long "i"). 2. That Mosaic customer service still impresses. Ordered Monday evening, on my doorstep Wednesday afternoon. [better than my recent experiences at J&R and alldirect.] 3. Together with Byrd/Adams, Jazztet, and a tall stack of OJCs (from J&R and alldirect), I have plenty of new material to enjoy before Bird/Diz arrives. 4. My amazon order for Bird/Diz just got pushed back to October. I guess I won't be listening to this before it cools down a bit outside (hopefully this will be sooner than when hell freezes over). 5. I need to pause now for a bit from acquiring. 6. That O'Day lady sure photographs well.
  25. tasty tunes Organissimo!! (...and nice radio pipes Lazaro)
