Coltrane's Olatunji Concert
dave9199 replied to Guy Berger's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I "remastered" mine on my computer. All they had to do was pull down the mids a bit and it's not as hard to listen to. How come I had the idea & not the record company? It seems they stuck to the sound too truthfully. -
PhillyQ, Hmm, tough call. Quite a few great albums if you're into noisy guitar rock. I've got them all & I'd say start with: 1. Sister 2. Daydream Nation 3. Goo 4. Dirty ...and a couple more earlier ones which are great: 5. EVOL 6. Bad Moon Rising (most noisy) More recent albums (more quirky & more jammy): 7. A Thousand Leaves 8. Murray St 9. Sonic Nurse (this might be a good one to start with also) The ones I didn't mention: 10. Sonic Youth (1st EP, still OOP) 11. Confusion Is Sex (low-fi noise) 12. Experimental, Jet Set, Trash & No Star (quirkiest of all!) 13. Washing Machine 14. NYC Ghosts & Flowers (my least favorite album, ny beat poetry experiments) There's my 14 cents.

LEAST favorite Miles Columbia box set???
dave9199 replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I find it interesting that there are votes for each one. I voted for #3, but I know I'll like it. I'm with JSngry on this one, there's nothing I haven't liked. The reason I picked #3 is because it's mostly live albums and knowing Miles was doing the same songs just with different people doen't thrill me initially, but I am looking forward to it as it's the last box. I'm just glad I didn't get into Miles back when these sets started coming out. It's been almost a DECADE if you include the Plugged Nickel box. And since there's still the Live Evil set that's yet to come out & a set from 1969 (2 cds), it will be 10 years for all of this. -
Ornette: Skies of America, Forms & Sounds, etc...
dave9199 replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Nate, I believe you're speaking of the album An Evening with The Ornette Coleman Trio. I have it on CD. It's out there as an import and I believe you're right about the string piece as I haven't listened to it in a while, but the rest of it is really good. The piece is called "Sounds & Forms For Wind Quintet". -

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The guitarist with pioneering punk rock band the Ramones is fighting a losing a battle with cancer in a Los Angeles hospital, Rolling Stone magazine reported on its Web site on Tuesday. Johnny Ramone, 55, whose real name is John Cummings, was diagnosed with prostate cancer four years ago, and it has now spread throughout his body, Rollingstone.com quoted the band's drummer, Marky Ramone, as saying. "Johnny's been a champ in confronting this, but at this point I think the chances are slim," Marky Ramone said in the report. "John never smoked cigarettes, he wasn't a heavy drinker and he was always into his health. It just proves when cancer seeks a body to penetrate, it doesn't matter how healthy you are or how unhealthy you are. It just seeps in and there's nothing you can do." The Ramones, famed for playing their high-energy, unpolished songs at breakneck speed, rose to fame in New York City in 1974, paving the way for such British punk rock icons as the Sex Pistols and the Clash. The band made its mark with such tunes as "Blitzkrieg Bop," "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue" and "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker," but it never achieved the same commercial success as acts that followed in its path. The Ramones officially retired in 1996. The band's singer, Joey Ramone (ne Jeff Hyman), died in 2001 of lymphatic cancer, while bassist Dee Dee Ramone (Douglas Colvin) died from a drug overdose the following year.

I think I got you beat Brandon. I also had all the singles, but when the complete B-sides came out, I sold my singles so I could have them all on one cd and make a little more room for others cds.

I picked this up today & just finished listening to it. Overall, very good. I was half listening during the first 4 songs so I have to listen again, but I kept waiting for a Lee Randaldo song(s). There's only one and it's song #8 called Paper Cup Exit. It's definitely good, but what was better, believe it or not, was the next song, a KIM GORDON SONG no less called I Love You Golden Blue. She sings in a breathy voice and the lyrics are good! The chorus is in a major key and works really well in contrast to the verses. The last song Peace Attack is really melodic also, that's a Thurston Moore song. Overall, I didn't hear a bad song. Pick this one up.

I'll be buying it on Thursday. I've got all their regular albums (Geffen, that is and earlier ones). I think they were great through Dirty in 1992. Since then, it's been hit or miss, but I still loyally buy each album.

The Young Ones EVERY STOOPID EPISODE dvd
dave9199 replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I saw a book at Borders very recently that dealt with all of the shows that this group has done. There is quite a few. There's a cartoon drawing of Vyvyans face on the cover. I think it's called That's Anarchy! Pretty interesting. -

I think those are the three longest posts on this board. -
Take 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon, take out the Kevin Bacon and 6 parts, And go from one jazz musician (leader & sideman, live or studio) and find a way to get back to the very same musician in how ever many steps it takes. More challenging to impose an amount, but it doesn't matter.

I'm totally serious about the drums. I was in a punk (alternative, whatever) band for over 7 years and our drummer was ADHD. It did cause problems with timing, but damn we were quite fast for a while. We threatened to kick him out and he responded great after that. He was predictable in that he'd speed up or even slow down in the same spots during any song, he just didn't realize it. He doesn't like our older stuff as much now because of that. On our last album (our 4th), he felt that it was his best work ever & I agree. He works in computers, got promoted and had to go back on ritalin to focus in meetings he always had to attend. He did very well. The funniest thing though is he is the human equivilent of a dog who loves your attention. He's a cartoon in 3-D really. I think if he believes in reincarnation, he wants to come back as Daffy Duck. I love the guy. Still friends. -

The Jazz Corps w/ Roland Kirk-vinyl tracklisting
dave9199 replied to dave9199's topic in Discography
Why n...yes, yes I am. Me & my wife, ehhhh, Morgan Fairchild, yeah. That's the ticket. It's called, ehhhhh, Morgan Fairchild's guide to Rahsaan Roland Kirk, yeah, that's it. Actually no, I'm not (nor is my wife...Morgan Fairchild). I've been putting the albums on cassette (yes, cassette) like they were originally released, and I noticed this one the track listing has two songs in different spots compared to another discography I've seen. So I wanted to just check as...I have nothing better to do. -
Anyone have this? Just wanted to check something. Thank you.

The way I feel about longboxes can be summed up with a few lines from a Bugs Bunny cartoon with the word longboxes in place of the word rabbit: Cowboy: "Longboxes. I hate longboxes. If there's one thing I can't stand more than one longbox...is TWO longboxes." All my cds are in a big open "box" where I can keep things in chronological order or as much as possible with box sets. But I put mine two rows high & two rows deep so long boxes just fuck it up. Although if I want to get to the bottom first row in back, I have to take a bunch of cds out, but I've gotten used to it. I've got two of them & haven't filled them as I get rid of some cds after a while, but those days might be over with trimming the wheat from the chaff (spelling?).

I thought OnoffOn was songs they had from when they were together originally rather than new written ones. I think a song called Dirt is on there & it's also on Horrible Truth & the radio sessions on Taang.
