  3. Among recordings by Steve Lacy, this is the trio with Jean-Jacques Avenel on bass and John Betsch on drums, recorded at The Old Church, both sets performed that night (11/30/97) on a double-CD. (I didn't get to hear the trio live until a year and a half later, also in a church, in Berkeley). I was curious what would be present in the pared-down trio. For one thing, Lacy being the only horn, there was more immediate evidence of the interplay betwen Lacy and the rhythm section, starting with Monk's "Shuffle Boil" and burning through Lacy originals like "The Bath," "The Rent," "Prayer," and "Blinks," all performed with a spirit of playfulness. This version of "The Door" (like the aforementioned "Prayer") far outstrips the RCA recording. (Thanks to Paul Secor for choosing me to do this).
  4. December issue of Smithsonian contains an article on Roy Haynes with great quotes from Billy Hart, Jack DeJohnette, Victor Lewis, and Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, et al. Nice photos, too. Well worth picking up.

  12. This year's Victoriaville festival May 15-19 will feature John Zorn's Cobra group, his Electric Masada group (with John Medeski, Marc Ribot), Fred Frith, Sylvie Courvoisier, Rova, Evan Parker, Peter Brotzmann, Rene Lussier, Joelle Leandre, Barre Phillips, and more.
  13. Sicilian sax player Gianni Gebbia performed with Damon Smith on bass and Garth Powell on drums at the Black Box in Oakland on Tuesday. The trio moved through a variety of styles (it would have been good to hear a second set). The featured group was Rova performing some recent material, including Jon Raskin's "Jukebox Detroit" and "Jukebox Choro," Steve Adams' "Survival," and Larry Ochs' "S." The group also played "Proclamation" from Gino Robair's opera-in-progress I, NORTON (about Emperor Norton). Highly recommend this group to fans of musical adventure.
