  1. love the sound. reminds me of youth in a Stand By Me kinda way.
  2. I work a block from Burgundy in the Marigny here in New Orleans so I thought of I Wish I Was In New Orleans when I heard about the tour. I don't think he still plays the tune but the area of the city, which did not flood, is one of the last places in America where you can disappear from all the bs.
  3. The two discs of Mal Waldron with Jim Pepper at the Utopia are first rate. They are. Funny Glasses and A Moustache, baby
  4. today I gave a cdr of the Soul Note Git Go live date to a guy rebuilding some houses near the house I am helping to rebuild. I heard him say he and his daughter listened to jazz, especially Mingus, and I remembered that someone recomended that cd to me a long time ago after a discussion on Mingus. I think it's the tension they create.
  5. double cassette of My Funny Valentine/Four and More
  6. Well, for the most part, they don't really do a very good job. And the writing exercises they conduct get a little old.... For the best writers, these "exercises" are analogous to working through a solo or a composition for a musician. Writing is an art form itself, a difficult one, and just because it takes music criticism as its jumping-off point does not mean it isn't valid on its own terms. There are bad writers out there just like there are bad painters and bad musicians, but hopefully with time, those writers will become very, very good or even great. I respect your admiration for reviewers. Are you one?
  7. cheesy but cool

  9. I heard it was hard to get Mal to play in the states after they banned smoking on all US flights. The cat who runs the Creative Music Guild in Portland, Or had to drive up to Canada to get him to play. At least that's the story he told me.
  10. If I have learned anything it's stay away from reviews. And I think the latest generation of reviewers are doing it for the free cd's if you ask me... There are a few exceptions though and they probably know who they are.
  11. yeah, a box set may be the only way Up Popped The Devil sees the light of day....

"Why did you have to go and ruin Bobby's 30th B-day show like that? Why did you have to follow his peppy little Promised Land opener with a 17 min plus colossus of a Sugaree?? Did you have to remind him and us who's the Master and who's the young apprentice? We knew,he knew, we still know."
