Metallica - St. Anger Beck - Midnite Vultures Stanley Cowell - Brilliant Circles (what I wouldn't give to have someone remaster this one - worst-sounding jazz CD I've ever heard) Archie Shepp - Fire Music J.J. Johnson - The Eminent, Vol. 1
-
I picked up the new Metallica CD, "St. Anger," yesterday. Metallica's last few releases have been somewhat disappointing, so it's nice to see them playing heavier music again. Here are some impressions: - This is very underproduced, compared to their last few albums. The drums sound awful, in my opinion. - James's vocals don't seem to have the same edge/rage as on previous albums. I think this takes away from the overall heaviness of the music. The lyrics themselves also don't strike me as edgy as on Metallica's previous albums. - The lack of guitar solos is a bit strange, although not totally unwelcome. - The songs are getting longer again, and are not as focused as on the last few efforts. Again, this is not totally unwelcome. I've listened to about half the album so far, so maybe I'll post more later. 3.5 stars so far, and far better than the last two releases for sure.

Name some Blue Note cds you find overrated
vibes replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Recommendations
Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder (just doesn't do much for me, especially the title track) Kenny Dorham - Una Mas (Just can't get into it, for some reason) Dizzy Reece - Star Bright (Other than the first track, this one just strikes me as very plain) Kenny Drew - Undercurrent (Also very plain) A lot of Hank Mobley's stuff doesn't do it for me, although I've found "Roll Call" and "Soul Station" very enjoyable lately. I do have the Mosaic box and should spend more time with it. Having mentioned all of those, I never get rid of CD's, because I've found that songs/albums may not be to my liking at one point in my life, but then do something for me later. -
Seems like a lot of people dislike this one, but it's one of the VEE's I listen to the most (more for Gato Barbieri than anything else).
-
Lon, if I remember correctly, you're the one who recommended this album to me in the first place, after I asked for Gato recommendations on the BNBB. I listen to it all the time!

I just went 4-5 weeks without buying any music. It was really difficult at first, but it got easier towards the end. My music collection has expanded a bit too much in the last year - I bought about 25 Mosaics and maybe another 300-500 CD's. Although I generally listen to music 12-15 hours a day, that's still not enough time to get through everything I've purchased. The real reason for cutting back, however, is that my wife and I want to get out of debt so that I can go to grad school. Unfortunately, that's at least 5 years away, maybe more.

I know we're talking about albums similar to "Inner Urge," but here's a recommendation for Joe as a sideman. I was listening to this in the car this afternoon and I love the way he plays on this record.

Another vote for thumbs up/thumbs down. Those were my favorite.

I'll take charcoal for flavor, but I would never have the patience for it myself. I grew up with propane, so that's what I'm used to. I love grilled food too. I'd like to try grilling bratwurst. We've been eating a ton of that lately. It's been our new thing since we moved to Minnesota and tried brats at a Twins game. I'm a big fan of grilled steaks and chicken too.

This morning: Gary Burton - A Genuine Tong Funeral Wes Montgomery - The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery George Russell - At the Five Spot Eddie Henderson - Sunburst Miles Davis - Steamin' Up next: Thad Jones - Motor City Scene
-
From this list, it was "Into Somethin'." My favorites, however, are probably "Judgment" and "One Step Beyond."

Interesting music. I don't think I've ever heard anything like this before. The guitar didn't do much for me - too much fuzz, too loud in the mix. I thought the other parts were pretty cool, however.

Thanks for posting that, Mnytime. I was surprised to see that a few of the Miles Davis SACD's were listed as OOP. They didn't last too long...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JIM ALFREDSON!
vibes replied to randissimo's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Happy Birthday, Jim! Hope your birthday is a great one. -
Groove Holmes plays on several tracks in the Gerald Wilson Pac Jazz Mosaic. After reading this thread, I went through some of those tracks again this morning. I've never heard any of his small group work, but the big band stuff was very good. If you like Holmes and don't have this set, I highly recommend it, and not just for the tracks he's on, either.

Andrew Hill Quartet - Iowa City Jazz Festival
vibes replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
R_T, I live in Minneapolis, but will be going to the festival. I hope you find people to go with you - I'm really looking forward to the line-up, especially Andrew Hill. -
Extra crispy, all the way. I like the taste, but I can only eat KFC when I have a few hours to lay down afterwards. It always makes me sick.

Actually (scary as this might be ), I've never heard any Ellington big band material. In fact, the only Ellington I've ever heard is on the album he did with John Coltrane. That's why I asked about this material - I don't have a clue about it. Thank you for the recommendations.

All this talk about the Hodges and Johnson sets has gotten me interested in buying these sets. I've never heard the music on either of them. I've never even heard Hodges, and "The Eminent, Vol. 1" is the only Johnson I've ever heard. Can anyone say anything additional about these sets? Make comparisons to other artists/sets/albums? Any help would be appreciated...

I have all three of these, and I say go for the Turrentine. I would say that in addition to being just plain great music, there's also a bit more variety (to my ears) in the Turrentine than in the other two sets. I think there's the least amount of variety in the Stitt set. Having said that, all three are great and you'll be happy with any of them.

Had to go with Larry Young, because I felt he really stretched himself on the instrument and put himself in a greater variety of contexts than his peers. Having said that, John Patton and Jimmy Smith would be other favorites - love the John Patton albums for the groove, and Jimmy Smith is a no-brainer. The "incredible" title that was on many of his albums was well-deserved. The guy really ripped it up!
-
I went with Kenny Burrell, but Tal Farlow, Wes Montgomery or Grant Green could easily have been my choice as well. I think Johnny Smith should have been on the list of available choices too. I was listening to the Johnny Smith Mosaic this morning and the guy was absolutely incredible.

I saw "Reloaded" today and it was better than I expected. I'm not into movies with too many special effects, but I guess there was enough action to keep me interested. Mnytime, thanks for the tip on staying through the end of the credits (I usually don't sit through them). A painful experience, to be sure, but it was worth it to see the trailer for "Revolutions." I'm definitely intrigued. To those of you who saw the first "Matrix," I highly recommend seeing the second one. The Zion parts are boring, but there's a lot of good action in the rest of the movie.
