  1. Tom, If you haven't already, I recommend going to your local Best Buy and playing with both of them. Most Best Buys have working displays on hand so that you can hear what they sound like. I've done this a few times, and have been very impressed with the sound quality. Several of my colleagues have XM radio and rave about it. The subscription fee is cheaper, but you have commercials, whereas with Sirius you do not. However, since this is new technology, for me I would go with XM, simply because they have far more subscribers than Sirius, and thus their outlook for the future is a bit better than Sirius's. For your car/home/office listening needs, I would recommend this Delphi unit: DELPHI SKYFi XM RADIO I've heard great things about this unit, especially since it's very flexible. It's what I would buy if I was going to get XM radio today. Good luck!
  2. I really like Bill Evans' Fantasy work from the 70's. The Woody Shaw Mosaic material is very good. Keith Jarrett's Impulse work is good too, although I've only heard the 75-76 material.
  3. I didn't know who it was either.
  4. I've had this set for a long time, and while I think it's pretty good, I've been a bit surprised that it has fared so well in the "what's your favorite Miles box?" poll. So, I think I need to hear others' opinions on this set. What's your favorite disc in this box? What should I be listening for? Should I be pulling out studio albums and comparing them to particular tracks/discs? Thanks in advance for the help!
  5. Today: Horace Silver - The Cape Verdean Blues, In Pursuit of the 27th Man Freddie Hubbard - Goin' Up Dave Brubeck/Paul Desmond - 1975: The Duets Bobby Hutcherson - The Kicker, Montara, Happenings 311 - Soundsystem Mad Season - Above Alice In Chains - Sap Up next: Miles Davis - Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel (inspired by the "your favorite Miles box" thread)
  6. I also had problems around the time Ron mentioned.
  7. Certainly! I have many more. Send me a PM with your email address.
  8. Voice mail? How'd you do that, bertrand?
  9. Someone should jump on the Bill Evans box. That's a great deal for some fantastic music. Just be careful not to get any rust on your hands when you open the box.
  10. Ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral, Macau
  11. I think I got these right. I do this same thing with all my Mosaics, whenever possible. Anyway, here goes: THE OPENER A Lovely Way to Spend Spring Hugore Oscalypso Here's To My Lady Lizzy's Bounce Soon BONE AND BARI Algonquin Nita's Waltz Bone & Bari Heart and Soul Again Pickup VOL. 3 Little Messenger Quantrale Jeanie Carvon Two Quarters of a Mile It's Too Late Now TWO BONES Fuss Budget Oatmeal Cookie Da-Baby Pajama Tops Slide's Ride Loquacious Lady Mean Jean SLIDIN' EASY Bit of Heaven Down Home I Wonder Where Our Love Has Gone Bongo Bop When Lights Are Low C.T.A. Have fun!
  12. Thanks for the recommendations, Dmitry. I'll have to pick some of those up soon. It's too bad Mosaic doesn't sell any Dickerson. I'd buy them in a second as a part of the current sale. How's the Barbieri/Brand CD, by the way? I used this handle on the BNBB for a while, and before that went by slb. I didn't use that handle very long, and changed to vibes to hide from someone that I didn't want to know I was there. Anyway, my real name is Steve.
  13. I made those burns, I think. How's the sound quality, a bit heavy on the bass? I forgot to turn off the bass boost on my mini-disc deck, I remember. Disagree on To My Queen. It's not boring at all. If anything, it's delicate and insigthful, imo. Have you heard To My Queen Revisited? Dmitry, I didn't get them from you...although, maybe the person I got them from did! The bass isn't too bad on these, but then, I don't have a fabulous system or anything, either. "To My Queen" is just my least favorite of all the Dickerson I've heard. I haven't heard any of his 70's stuff, but it's high on my list of things to buy. Do you have many of the Steeplechase albums? If so, where would you suggest that I start?
  14. I'd like to see a set like this materialize as well. Must admit though, despite all of the "this lp is his crowning achievement" commentary, I find "To My Queen" to be the least interesting of the first four dates. "How Deep is the Ocean" is mighty tasty....but that 18 min. title track is about as interesting (imo) as viewing a VHS of the 'Complete History of Franco American SpaghettiOs'!! Part of what got me going on this is another board member was kind of enough to make burns from LP's for me of "Jazz Impressions of Lawrence of Arabia" and "Unity." These are GREAT albums, and they make me wonder what other Dickerson treasures are out there. And Weizen, I'm with you on "To My Queen" - I find it the most boring of his 60's work that I've heard thus far. If you're interested in hearing "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Unity," send me a PM.
  15. Probably same owners. I know they own a few different shops under that name or the Mad Platter name.
  16. John, I don't know what you like to eat, but a couple places in LA that I love are: Junior's, in Westwood, not far from UCLA. Great sandwiches, excellent bakery, and pretty reasonably priced. Empress Pavilion, Chinatown. Probably the best Chinese food I've ever had in this country. All the employees and cooks are Chinese, as are most of the people in the restaurant (which can make ordering/getting what you want a bit difficult at times, if you don't speak Chinese). The food is very authentic, however, and that's always appreciated. Their dim sum is quite good, as are most of the other dishes I've tried there. Also pretty reasonably priced. Have a good time! I just realized I'll be in town for a wedding at the same time...Hmmm...
  17. Dang it Mule! Keep sending them to Amoeba, keep Aron's on the down low! jk What about Rhino records? Are they still around? I haven't been to that end of town in a while... If you're referring to Rhino Records in Claremont, yes, they are definitely still around. That's where I grew up. Went back for a visit in February, and while the pricing wasn't as good as it used to be, I managed to pick up several OOP items sealed, like Conns and West Coast Classics, and then some XRCD's at reasonable prices. It's worth having a look, but it's a bit out of the way, especially for someone who's just in town to visit.
  18. Vandyke was one of the original "Funk Brothers", the band that is the subject of the movie "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown". If you like any of the Motown hit songs, this movie is a must see. The DVD is readily available to rent or purchase. "The Way I Feel" is my favorite album by Big John. I pray for this to be released domestically. If you can't wait for "The Way I Feel" to be released domestically, pick up the TOCJ. It's not terribly hard to find and sounds great. I would rank a couple of other Patton sessions above it, but it's still very good. The Way I Feel is available throught Dustygoove as a japanese paper sleeve edition right now. Like I said, the TOCJ sounds great and...
  19. Can I have your "Ready For Freddie" JRVG, in that case?

  21. Produced and arranged by Jack McDuff Recording engineer: Bob Gallo Remastered by Ron McMaster
  22. Sad, but very funny at the same time
  23. I'm listening to Wayne Shorter's "Night Dreamer" right now, and a thought came to mind - a Wayne Shorter BN Mosaic would be freakin' awesome! Now that I think about it, there are a lot of artists, BN or otherwise, that really deserve this kind of treatment but that will probably never get it, just because so many of their albums have been put out in other formats or in other boxes. So, if you could have any artist's work put together in a Mosaic set, who would it be? Who would you have master the music? For me, I would have Malcom Addey do the mastering - his work on other Mosaics has been excellent. Some of my desired sets: - Complete Wayne Shorter Blue Note recordings - Complete Bobby Hutcherson Blue Note recordings (even the 70's stuff) - Complete Walt Dickerson 60's sessions (I've really been digging this guy lately) - Complete Booker Ervin Prestige Sessions (just because it would be nice to have it in a box) There are many others that I could list. Who are some of yours?
  24. You just get the weird poetry (which someone should post here, just for fun )
  25. I agree that this is probably the "most fun" AOTW selected so far. First impressions of this album: where can I get more music like this? Of all the Rare Grooves I've purchased, this is definitely in my top 3. I got it in the mail late last week, and have listened to it several times since. I wish it was a bit more spacey than it already is, but I'm glad Brother Jack didn't overdo it to the point of sounding cheesy. "Oblighetto" is probably my favorite track on the album, followed closely by the title track. I wish they had used Jean DuShon's voice on more than just "Oblighetto." It gives the track a very spacey/eerie vibe, and I really like that. Thumbs up to Soul Stream for picking a great album!
