  1. Just wanted to mention that I opened up the Kenny Burrell and am listening to it right now. It sounds excellent and Kenny was really on that day. A definite must for anyone who likes jazz guitar, or holiday music. The LPR series is very affordably priced, as well.
  2. Gotta love the cover!
  3. While Vince Guaraldi's "Charlie Brown Christmas" is definitely my favorite, I also highly recommend Kenny Burrell's "Have Yourself a Soulful Christmas." Someone burned me a copy a while back, and I've always enjoyed it. The great thing about this is (much to my surprise) that it was just released in the Verve LPR series. My copy just came in the mail today, but I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. Still, the LPR series is cheap and I'm glad Verve put this one out.
  4. I love that Walt Dickerson record too! This is the first thing that came to mind when I saw the title of this thread. Of course, no one ever would have guessed that I liked this album.
  5. Pay online, Weizen. They'll send you email notifications when your bills are ready, too. What I hate about credit card companies is if you're carrying a balance, then pay it all off, you still get charged interest the next month, even though you thought you paid the card all off. Credit card companies are bloodsuckers.
  6. The first session that came to mind is Jackie McLean's DESTINATION OUT! session. For me, it's a session where everything went perfectly. However, I decided long ago that I want to die peacefully - my life has generally been very hectic. So with that in mind, I choose: Grant Green - STREET OF DREAMS It's very peaceful and laid back. The music clicks, the musicians interacted beautifully with each other, and there is, for me, a very intimate feeling to this session. I'd just lay down, cross my arms and listen to the last few bars of "Somewhere in the Night," and then die a very happy man.
  7. This is one of my favorite Grant Green albums. I didn't realize it was the AOW, and listened to it a couple times over the weekend and then again today. To me, there is a very special vibe to this record. For me, a lot of that comes from the addition of Bobby Hutcherson to the session. I wish he had recorded more with organists, as "Street of Dreams" and "Let 'em Roll" are at the very top of my list of favorite organ sessions. This album is great for a quiet afternoon or evening. It always calms my nerves. I've never agreed with people that call this album a snooze, or say that nothing special happens. For me, having something really special happen on the album doesn't necessarily make the album great. It's the musicians, the way they interact and the way they make me feel that make an album great, for me. This is a lazy, dreamy album, and I like it that way. The renditions of the songs on the album are great, and I'm glad this was a very early addtion to my jazz collection. Four and a half stars.
  8. I have a sealed Japanese LP of this, if anyone's interested.
  9. I read on our corporate intranet yesterday that everything was supposed to have been restickered in our stores (Best Buy) for this change. The idea was that customers were going to come in with the expectation of finding CD's at lower prices, so it was best to get it taken care of right away. I'll have to go to one of the local stores and verify that it's actually taken place. Also, if I read the article correctly, it looks like with the lower prices on CD's, Universal is also pulling most of its funding for advertising in our circulars and for in-store promotions. Interesting...
  10. Same here...and over the last 48 hours, I've had many problems accessing the board. And when I've been able to access it, it has generally been very, very slow.
  11. Kind of off topic, but all this talk about Wes and Mel made me pull out the Wes Riverside set and listen for Mel a bit more. So anyway, right before I woke up this morning, I had a dream that I went to an auditorium on a college campus, and Mel was there trying to push a new CD of religious music. I asked him if he was the guy that recorded with Wes Montgomery, and he told me excitedly that he was, and took me over to a B3 to show me some stuff. A few minutes later, who should appear but Diana Krall ( ), but Mel won't give her the time of day. So, she walks up to me and asks what I did to get him to talk. I said "I don't know, I just asked him about Wes Montgomery. Give me your email address, and I'll tell you more about Wes." Diana walks away with a bewildered look on her face. End of dream.
  12. I have this one and it's WAY better than SOFT SAMBA. No vibraphone from McFarland on OCTOBER SUITE, unfortunately.
  13. Roy Ayers - Virgo Vibes Johnny Hodges Mosaic Hank Mobley - Thinking of Home Andrew Hill - Passing Ships Gary McFarland - Soft Samba Lee Morgan - Sonic Boom Gato Barbieri - Bolivia John Klemmer - Involvement Gerry Mulligan/Paul Desmond - Two of a Mind Right now: Grant Green - Goin' West. I'm liking this one a lot more than I thought I would. The JRVG sounds good to my ears, and the music is very, very laid back.
  14. I finally listened to Shrdlu's recommendation and picked this one up. The wordless vocals are a major turn-off to me. To be honest, the music kind of reminds me of the elevator music my grandfather used to have playing in his dental office. It would be nice if the vibes were a little higher in the mix too. Very relaxing music, whatever the case.
  15. I picked up the Japanese release earlier this year, and I highly recommend it, both for the sound and the music.
  16. Dizzy Reece - Star Bright I bought the "Comin' On" Conn and really liked it, so I searched around for and bought the "Star Bright" JRVG. This album is a major snooze, and the sound on the JRVG didn't help things, either.
  17. Right now: Chick Corea/Gary Burton - Crystal Silence Also this week: Hank Mobley - Thinking of Home (just got this, and haven't been so pleasantly surprised by a CD in a long time!) Hank Mobley - The Flip Lee Morgan - Sonic Boom Charlie Rouse - Bossa Nova Bacchanal Andrew Hill - Passing Ships Jack Teagarden - Mis'ry and the Blues Hugh Masakela - Grrr John Klemmer - Involvement (another pleasant surprise) Phil Woods and his European Rhythm Machine - Live at Montreux Al Grey - Snap Your Fingers These past couple of months have really been hurting my wallet. There's way too much good music being released.
  18. Hey, good letter, Rooster_Ties...and you didn't even mention Andrew Hill once.
  19. Listened to this one a couple times today. "Third World" and "Fenix" are my favorite Barbieri albums, and if you like those, you'll like this new reissue as well. I think Lonnie Liston Smith and Gato Barbieri make a great team. Now, if they'd only release "El Gato"...
  20. Another vote for "Black Monday" here. "Siete Ocho" and "Flea Flop" (Judgment) would also be on my list. I've really been enjoying the title track from "Passing Ships," so add that too. Add the title track from "Lift Every Voice." "Wailing Wall," "Refuge," and "Dedication" would also be on my list. There's a lot of great material to choose from, to be sure...and I haven't even listed anything from "Black Fire," "Cosmos," "Compulsion" or "Involution."
  21. I'm really enjoying this one too. I've only listened to the first three tracks so far, but I'm impressed. It makes me wonder what Andrew would have done with a group this size around the time "Black Fire" and "Judgment" were recorded. This is a great release! I can't remember being this excited about a new release in a very long time. I made up an excuse about having an errand to run and then left work early so I could listen to this and some of the other new music I picked up today.
  22. Went back to the store, and after opening up a couple more boxes, finally found one where the CD's didn't have that sticky film on them. I am definitely going to put these in jewel cases the second I get home. Put the first CD on in the car and loved it! I'm very excited to hear the rest of the box.
  23. After hearing a few song samples from this set, I went and bought it today. My excitement quickly went away upon finding that all four CD's in the set were ruined. For those of you who haven't seen the packaging, the CD's are inserted into four slots in a foam block, which is some of the worst CD packaging I've ever seen. Apparently some liquid in the foam seeped out and stuck to the CD's. Has this happened to anyone else?
  24. Where does cduniverse ship from? I'm waiting for a package from them.
  25. Grant Green - Idle Moments. Didn't know who Grant Green or any of the sidemen were, had never heard of Rudy Van Gelder or anything. I just thought the vibes/guitar combo might sound interesting. It was also my first Blue Note CD. I had no idea what I was getting myself into...
