  1. Thanks for all the recommendations in this thread. I picked up "Only The Lonely" and "In The Wee Small Hours" today, and have the former on right now. So far, I like it quite a bit. My exposure to Frank Sinatra in the past has been limited to Christmas music, the 1959 concert with Red Norvo, and the Rat Pack DVD-A title.
  2. Lee Morgan/Wayne Shorter Vee-Jay set - The Young Lions session
  3. If you can afford it, there's nothing wrong with buying multiple sets and then waiting to open them up. I do this all the time. I sat on the Mulligan CJB set for at least 6 months before opening it, and I've only listened to 1.5 discs from the Lee/Christy set in the more than one year that I've had it. Eventually, you'll get to it, right? Delusion is a wonderful thing.
  4. I was scammed on Yahoo Auctions. When the PlayStation 2 first came out, games were pretty expensive and not always easy to come by. I won a game at $15 or so off the retail price, which was pretty unheard of. After exchanging a couple emails with the seller, I determined the game was never going to come. Negative feedback starting appearing for this person, so I began exchanging emails with other people that had been scammed to get more information. Like me, they had all bid on PS2 games. The seller wasn't too bright. From his email address, I was able to determine what school he was attending, his parents' home address, etc. I called the university police at his school and had him arrested. A few days later, I got my money back through PayPal, with an apology from the seller for "all the confusion."
  5. Working in retail and trying to deal with natural disasters like this is always interesting. Batteries is one of the categories I deal with, and we've sold more C and D batteries in Florida the last four days than we sell chainwide in some months. As far as I can tell from what and how much we're selling, people aren't taking their chances with Frances. Best wishes to all our board members in Florida.
  6. Doesn't look that way from the calendar: http://dakotacooks.com/calendar.htm Would love it if you guys came to town! I'm a big fan of the CD.
  7. The Dakota is now in Minneapolis. I look at their website pretty frequently, and while a lot of great acts come through, I've never been there. If Organissimo comes, however, I'll definitely be there. As I understand it, The Dakota is the place to play in the Twin Cities.
  8. Gerald Wilson - The Golden Sword session
  9. two or three miles?! That's going to be difficult considering that it's going to be dark when I get home here pretty soon. I live out in the country and there are no streetlights...but there are plenty of dogs and trigger-happy rednecks. I'm looking for an exercise routine I can do at home..... Also, what is the best place to get started with Atkins? Thanks. I started with a book on the Atkins Diet. I rarely use the Atkins branded food. When it's too hot or too cold to walk in the park, I go to the local recreation center and use the treadmills. I try to do this first thing in the morning I might not be so motivated in the later in the day Starting with the book is the best thing you can do. In order for Atkins to really work, you need to know which foods are best for the phase of the diet you're in, as well as what to look forward to as you move through each phase. I've only tried Atkins-branded food once, and that was just a snack bar. I find it best to stay away from anything that remotely resembles the food that got me into trouble in the first place...But that's just me - once you've read the book, do what works best for you.
  10. I lost 75lbs last year in about 6-7 months, doing the Atkins diet. I went on and off the diet between August of last year and June of this year. By July of this year, I had gained back 40lbs. I got really sick in July and lost 8lbs in two days, and decided this would be a perfect place to start a diet again. That was July 11. Today is August 27, and I've lost a total of 38lbs since before I got sick. I'm doing the Atkins diet (very strictly, sticking to Phase 1) and I exercise for 45 minutes a day, six days a week. My weight loss is pretty extreme for such a short amount of time, and on occasion I do feel a little weak, but I'm very motivated and feel good. My weight is now very close to where it was when I lost my resolve last year, and I would like to lose as much as 20 more pounds from where I am right now, which would put me at 195lbs (I'm 6'3").
  11. Jim, thanks for posting those pictures of your player. I believe that's the very first MD portable I owned, and I haven't seen one of them since 1998 or so. I've missed that jog dial/button ever since I sold it to a friend.
  12. I saw this for the first time at a local grocery store yesterday, so I decided to pick some up and try it out. I really like it a lot. It does look really dark, almost black, and it's grape flavored. I like Code Red a lot, but I think I like this better (and I didn't like LiveWire at all, when I tried it). If you see Pitch Black, pick some up.
  13. I've only listened to the first disc and a half of the Shearing set thus far, but in all those tracks, Toots only plays harmonica on one track ("Caravan," I believe), and plays guitar the rest of the time. It's not as bad as I thought it would be, and I definitely wouldn't let this be a hang-up if you're considering purchasing the set.
  14. I listened to the first disc this morning, and it's excellent music. I've been listening to the Nancy Wilson/George Shearing CD that was recently released and having fun with it, and the quality of the music in Mosaic is comparable. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up. It wasn't cheap, but it was worth it.
  15. I don't know how many I have, but it's more than 20. The George Shearing just came in the mail today. Can't wait to listen to it!
  16. Happy Birthday, Lon - hope it's a good one!
  17. Good for Verve. Nice to see some of the OOP Verve Elite Edition titles in there. Lots of people still haven't heard them.
  18. It's being released in Japan in the next few months, I believe.
  19. Yeah, my router isn't one of the ones listed. I've never had any problems with it, and I've been very pleased with its performance. Although, I have been contemplating upgrading to an 802.11g router. I just got a Centrino laptop and connected to a g network a few weeks ago for the first time, and was pretty impressed with the speed.
  20. Very strange. I've been using a D-Link wireless router for 3 years and have never had a problem like that. Thanks for the heads up, though.
  21. Nice to see Illinois Jacquet mentioned on cnn.com's front page and on so many other news websites. He certainly deserves it.
  22. I was loading some of my new CD's on my mp3 player, and skipped over the new LPR release of "Desert Winds." At the last minute, I changed my mind and threw it on there. I'm glad I did. I just discovered Illinois Jacquet in the last year with the Mosaic, and I'm glad I did. Queueing "Desert Winds" up now...
  23. Always call ahead before buying something this way. Almost all retailers that have websites with store inventory information use non-realtime inventory systems. The information displayed is often yesterday's information. Most of these inventory systems also do not use "license plating," which means that the system cannot differentiate between a display unit, an open box unit, a defective unit, a unit on hold for a customer, or a brand new unit.
  24. I believe there is a company that makes software that allows you to do this. Google "notmad" and look for that company's site and their iPod solution.
  25. I picked up the SACD of this and just finished listening to it all the way through for the first time. I have to echo Lazaro's comments about the drum sound. I don't know if it's the disc or my system, but the drums sound like they're not in the same room as the other instruments. Other than that, I like this disc a lot. It's nice to hear McCoy playing in a few different styles (check out "New Orleans Stomp") and with some other musicians. He does a fine job of comping and letting the other musicians share the spotlight and overall, the results are very nice. I'll definitely be spending more time with this one in the next few days.
