  1. Retail is a tough business, and they and their stockholders are looking at overhead and how much money their clearing per square foot of retail space, so scaling back on jazz and classical has actually been a longer time coming than I expected. The costs of offering an obscure title on the Internet are different. They've essentially got to be able to sell a unit box at a cost high enough to cover the costs of warehousing and throwing the thing up plus overhead of maintaining the database. All in all the overhead per item online is a lot lower, and the potential market is pretty big, so the same factors pushing toward smaller stock aren't really at work. --eric ← One additional consideration with large retailers selling more obscure or deep catalog titles on their websites is that they often don't carry the inventory at all. Once a customer orders a title from the website, an order is generated and sent to the distributor. This makes keeping a large selection of titles available much less painful than it would otherwise be. Some websites are doing this for other types of product as well. I think it works out well both for retailers and consumers.

    Gato Barbieri

I love Gato's earlier work (pre-1975, mostly). Here's my favorite:
  3. Same here. Wireless = marriage saver
  4. She doesn't mind. I know she occasionally pops in to see what I write. That makes me feel a little weird, but I generally behave myself, so...
  5. A little late to the party... Mosaic Future Projects
  6. ← Seriously, just try the Verve LPRs. After that, who cares what anyone else thinks? Make up your own mind. If you like the LPRs, surely you will like more of the music in the Mosaic. If you don't like 'em, you've only wasted $20-25. When it comes to your taste, no one but you has golden ears. If you don't like the set, you've got no one to blame but yourself. Believe it or not, no one on this board is forcing anyone else to buy Mosaic sets.
  7. You can get a sample: Buy one of these: Blues Caravan Buddy and Sweets Both are easily obtained, and I'm pretty sure both will be in the set. If you like them, then buy the set. If not, then at least you haven't spent a ton of money. Personally, I like both quite a bit, at least, the parts where Buddy's not soloing.
  8. How does the RVG sound compared to the previous CD issue?
  9. That's where it was when this thread started.
  10. Thanks for the heads up. I just ordered the Anita O'Day.
  11. I feel it is a little overrated, but I totally agree with the second statement. I listen to this band's other albums way more than ALS. That's not to say, however, that ALS isn't very enjoyable.
  12. Yeah, I wish they'd kept the cover from the previous CD issue. It kind of sucked, but in a good way. This new one just doesn't seem right.
  13. Al, have you listened to "Complete Communion?" That might be an easier place to start than "Symphony."

    Tony Bennett

Anyone have any Tony Bennett recommendations they'd like to share? I have a few of his CDs: Snowfall (The Christmas Album) The Ultimate Tony Bennett MTV Unplugged Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album I prefer his later work, where his voice is a bit raspier. I've been listening to "Ultimate" and "Unplugged" a lot lately, and enjoy everything I have by him. Thanks in advance.
  15. John, if you do choose Dell, check for coupons at couponmountain.com before you order. I helped my brother get a new computer (much like you're helping your mother-in-law), and was able to save him almost $500 with the coupons I found.
  16. I have both the hybrids (at least, I think there are only two), and they are pretty good. I don't know a thing about Sam Cooke, but the music is enjoyable and yes, the guy could sing. The wife also likes the music, which is always a plus.
  17. I picked up this CD today at my local Borders. Perfect music for a hot summer day. Thanks again for the recommendation.
  18. Personally, I'm a fan of Dell, and have been using their computers for years and would recommend them to anybody. The only reason why I would say that you might want to check out a retailer is if you prefer to look at or try things before you buy them. A Best Buy or CompUSA or the like would allow you to do this, and ask questions, too. I would probably go this route for at least the monitor. I'm picky about picture quality and would want to see what I'm getting into before spending hundreds of dollars on a display. Again, Dell is a good brand, and I love having the ability to customize my computers before buying. I also have a Sony desktop, which has been very reliable. My father has several Sony computers and they've all been extremely reliable as well. Good luck with the search.
  19. Thanks to everyone who has mentioned this disc. Up until this thread, I was completely unaware of Smithsonian Folkways. I've been checking out their website last night and this morning, and there's a ton of really interesting music available from them. I've added this Bonfa disc to my want list.
  20. I have the two Buddy Rich Verve LPRs, so I'll definitely consider getting this set once I know more about what's in it. The only thing that might potentially turn me off to a Buddy Rich set is drum solos. I hate drum solos, and I don't think Mr. Rich realized there was a limit to how much drum soloing people could take. The two LPRs have drum solos all over the place, which is annoying. Fortunately, the rest of the music is quite rewarding.

    DVD-Audio from LP

Welcome back, Shrdlu! Long time no see.
  22. That information is just like what you get in the Mosaic booklet. Maybe I'm just dumb/inexperienced with this sort of thing, but I was under the impression there should be titles of singles/78's next to the catalog numbers provided in the discography. I'm also interested in original track order as well.
  23. Vibes, Didn't most of these originally come out as 78s/singles? I know they eventually showed up on album compilations... ← I believe you're right, but even having that information would be helpful--the catalog numbers are given, but the corresponding single/78 info is not.
  24. Does anyone have album information for this set? I like to make mp3's out of my Mosaic sets and then arrange the tracks into the original album sequences. This particular set is a bit of a nightmare, and unlike many other Mosaic sets, the original album names are not given. Any help would be appreciated.
