  1. Clearly I should re-read it.
  2. Just wish he would post more often.
  3. We all contribute in our own ways.
  4. I read that book, The Battle Cry of Freedom, when it came out. Recently gave my son a copy and he's reading it now. Hope he likes it.
  5. Rows of mansions along Van Ness were actually dynamited to provide a firebreak, or so I've heard.
  6. The fact that it was a Wall Street firm that failed to tip on an order of that size says a lot about Wall Street firms.
  7. Shocking and saddening news. I really liked his work. RIP
  8. The weather was hot when I was in SoCal for a few days. Then I came back up here yesterday and it's cold again. Go figure.
  9. "Life," the TV series, ran from 2007 to 2009. Good show.
  10. No kidding! What kind of racket is this? It's probably a doomed racket. Right now the only places to buy "Sundidos" are from 57th Street Books, http://semcoop.indiebound.com57th-street-books, or from me at jblitw@att.net - $12 total (that includes Organissimo discount). (Remember to demand your Organissimo discount, though.) More sellers to come, surely. Russell wrote two versions of "Dreadful Sanctuary." The better, I think, is the one issued as a Lancer paperback: tight, punchy, with Chandlerish cracks, an unhappy ending. The longer version seems padded to me and has an implausible happy ending - no doubt this was the version that Campbell serialized in Astounding in 1948 (he demanded happy endings). Russell was a delight, he should be better appreciated today. You got that right, my friend.
  11. I don't recall that Eric Frank Russell story.
  12. A few years ago I gave "Have Gun, Will Travel" a chance (in my case, I borrowed discs from a library) and had a similar reaction to you, Berigan. Surprisingly good show. Someday I should just buy the first three seasons. Boone was such a solid actor. Lately I've been re-watching some favorite episodes of "Homicide," mainly from seasons 3 and 4 so far.
  13. Of the list, I've only had In'n'Out. Good, but not great.
  14. I think I saw that cartoon when I was a little kid.
  15. I thought their shelf life was more like the half life of Uranium. How disappointing.
  16. I recently completed watching the seasons featuring the 11th doctor (Matt Smith). That was my first experience with actually watching Doctor Who, a show that I've been aware of since I was a kid but had never really sat down and tried to watch it. I became hooked quickly and blasted through the available episodes. I'm working my way back to the 2005 reboot now. Yeah, I've been aware of Doctor Who all my life too, but never had any interest in it. Then my son got into it over the past year or so, and got me to start with the 9th Doctor, Eccleston. When I told him that I couldn't imagine liking anyone in the role as much as Eccleston, he said, "You never forget your first Doctor."
  17. Been watching a lot of Dr. Who with my son. The new series. We're on the third season, so 10th Doctor, David Tennant.
