  1. Wow tons of birthdays lately! Happy B-day Mr. Sngry!
  2. Wow Conn, that sounds excellent! You mentioned "practicing calculations". What kind of calculations? What kind of chess secrets do you have stored up there in your noggin?
  3. cool! Welcome, Selim!! This place is the hippest joint on the web.
  4. Well, I guess the way I defined it in my head had to do with acquiring physical property versus valuing musical content. To what degree you balance those or value one over the other would be to what degree you are a collecter vs. listener...
  5. Strangely enough, I read the second one a looong time ago, but not the first one. I would definitely say that it was a good read. I was wondering if anyone had read both because I wanted to know if the first one was worth my time, or comparable to its sequel.
  6. I am soooo far away from a collecter. The main thing that fueled my Jazz listening were my theory studies and the desire to be a Jazz musician. So, now that I'm neither a theory student or a Jazz musician I am left in this weird twilight phase of listening. I tend to be not interested at all in collecting albums or even sound quality as much as wanting to hear what those cats are doing musically. I don't think that will ever change even though I'll probably never have any practical use for whatever miniscule observations I make about a particular recording or style...
  7. Has anyone read either of the Hyperion books by Dan Simmons?
  8. Jazz, you might try looking in the phone book under "Cost Plus World Market" - which is, I think, the full name of the store. (Look under "C".) What major city are you in?? (World Market has a "store locator" on their website, by state, if that helps any. I think I gave the link up early in this thread.) I finished off my first box of Ginger Altoids last night, so I stopped by the World Market here in Kansas City (the only World Market in Kansas City). They only had SIX boxes left in the whole store (meaning the regular size tins, about $2 a tin), so I bought all six of them!!! I can see I might have to get my next fix from some on-line resource. OMIGOSH OMIGOSH!! I looked up Cost Plus World Market and there's one in my city! THANKS RT! Soon I'll have a nice meal with ginger ale and ginger bread. Then I'll finish up with a nice ginger altoid. While I watch Top Hat!! Maybe I'm getting carried away....
  9. This isn't a picture of me, but a picture of my best friend reading the newspaper. He's single, ladies!
  10. The poster of the same moniker got me thinking on some science fiction. (Has anyone read the foundation series? The second and third books of that series features "The Mule" was the center character). Anyways, who here, if anyone, is into science fiction, either films, literature, or even a tv series? Does anyone have some favorite authors or films? Or am I just a huge nerd?
  11. Maren you are striking.
  12. You know, before I liked jazz (and well into half a year of liking it), I couldn't STAND saxophone (really hated it). The two players who really turned me around were Gerry Mulligan and Stan Getz. Both had beautiful beautiful tones to my rock-conditioned ears. I'm sure you have probably already tried this, but you might want to play some Mulligan/Baker stuff around her (Or standard Getz fare like Girl From Ipanema) and see how she reacts... If you've already tried something like that then I apologize for my unwanted advice!
  13. Wow thanks! That gives me a much better clue what to listen for.
  14. Mostly the way I can tell whether it's a valve or not is by the range and the articulations (which remind one of a trumpet, maybe because of those consistently "punchy" attacks you usually won't hear with a slide). The range is much lower than a trumpet, and the timbre of a trombone is much much warmer, so that rules out it being a trumpet. This isn't the best method though, because some bone players (like J.J. Johnson, I believe) could play bop on a slide trombone. A really experienced listener or player can probably tell the difference between a valve or slide bone by listening to the timbre, because I do believe there is a sound quality difference between a valve bone and a slide bone, my ear is just not sharp enough to catch it. Just some personal observations there...
  15. If there's one thing I learned from the movie High Fidelity it's how to go about organizing your records: Autobiographical "I can show you how I got from Deep Purple to The Soft Boys in 25 moves and if I want to find Landslide by Fleetwood Mac I have to remember it's in the purchased for someone in the fall of 1983 pile, but didn't give it to them for personal reasons..." Anyways, I would organize by genre subcategorized by alphabetical last name with the compilations coming last by alphebetical title. The ones with lots of players you like, pick the player that is your favorite or most listened to and use his/her last name for organization. Um, did that help?
  16. "I do not mind answering emails but I WILL NOT send anyone any nude photo's."

  21. I've been really, really wary of posting my pic online for, well, for alot of reasons really. But, somehow, I just feel connected to you guys the way I've never felt for any other internet forum. I know you guys won't be as judgmental as so many people are, because you are all great people. So, I guess it is finally time for me to step out of the shadows. Someone give me a drumroll....
  22. I looked in the phone book for World Market to no avail! My only hope is Trader Joe's...
  23. Man GOOD question. What's after Funkateer..... would it be like reaching enlightenment? have you purged your inner being through heavy bulletin board meditation? what title could they possibly give to someone so WISE?!?!! FUNKY LAMA....
  24. Yeah, I felt the same way when I had to put my 15 year old dog down. Luckily he had a great vet who actually cares about the animals she takes care of. I'm sorry to hear about your loss, it's tough to lose a pet! I know what you mean about still watching your feet even though she's gone (my dog was a little runt; strong though)...
  25. I've never heard of it, but then, I'm not exactly well versed in either poetry or literary criticism. What is it all about? Thanks for the contributions guys! I'm gonna try and check out the authors of alot of those poems. Here is the second and last poem I've ever written. Feel free to tell me that I suck! The Land of Never Never Sleep Bright are the flourescent lights that hang overhead. But brighter do they shine from the linolium floor As it reflects and spits back out their blasphemy with angry intensity. So unholy it seems as the mop swings back and forth In vain effort to clean the slippery surface. So contrary and horrible the artificial daylight is When all is covered in the blackest night outside Forever trying to invade the defiant lights that refuse to die Even when the sun disappears below the earth. So loud the thoughts of others are as they pass by So obtrusive is their presence as they shop for dishes for toothbrushes, for motor oil, for toilet paper, for snacks for cold medicine, for greeting cards, for car stereos for clothes, for utensils, for windshield wipers, for fishing rods Why are they here when they should be in bed Sleeping and resting for the next blind turbulent day The shadows move when eyes are looking elsewhere And pretend to be still when they are again observed They are frightening foes to be watched carefully Lest they act without warning and drag someone down Into the depths of unknown terrors and nameless places They are the muddy concoction of every fear and doubt They are the singers of the silent songs, the trumpets of misery In this prison will we walk until a single day becomes a month In this prison do our wardens shout and scream at us In this place I have gone insane from never sleeping In this place will my insanity always be waiting for me, for the rest of my life.
