So very mellow. I've had a hard time getting into it. Panopticon clicked with me much more quickly. Have you checked out Old Man Gloom? An Isis side-project (Aaron Turner plus various HydraHead affiliated artists) which has released some really interesting albums that are fairly eclectic but surprisingly solid. The Isis dvd "Clearing the Eye" that Ipecac put out a month ago is very, very good.

The Conet Project box (numbers station recordings) was able to be reissued a few years back solely due to a financial settelement from Wilco, as Wilco never bothered to obtain permission to use those samples on Yanqui Foxtrot Hotel. The box is a blast. Not exactly "easy listening" but a fascinating audio document. I've sold off all of the Cows albums I used to own. They had their moments but I finally realized I just didn't enjoy them as much as I though I should given their (am)rep. I'll probably regret that decision at some point and try to repurchase a few of their discs. Samhain had a few good tracks and you could probably compile a single disc "best of" that would serve you well but they went wildly awry pretty quickly before Glenn finally signed to DefJam, named the band after himself, and started taking steroids.

I don't know about "overrated" but, in certain circles, Loveless is one of the most over-hyped discs I can think of. I love the album but could live without the mythology surrounding the recording of the disc and Shields' subsequent musically hermetic existence. I'll disagree with the suggestion to ignore Spiritualized, at least up through "Ladies and Gentleman..." Pierce released far more entertaining albums than "Sonic Boom" post-Spaceman 3. I'd still take a 20 minute live version of "Suicide" over either's solo work any day. As far as the Misfits go I've yet to hear a sloppier live band, at least when Doyle was on guitar in the early 80's, but I still love the energy and the beautiful melding of pop, punk and goth horror when Glen was at his campiest and writing the best tunes he'd ever come up with. I just heard a live show from 1978 (with Bobby Steele still in the band) where they play Elvis' version of "Blue Christmas" into "We are 138." Just beautiful.

I'll be grabbing a few of these as soon as they are available on either itunes or emusic. The Gjerstad and Luther Thomas discs are the only ones available through either option so far. I'm not sure if the quality of the file will vary but the price most definitely will. Itunes will be around 99 cents per track and emusic is around 25 cents per track.

Go for the cheapie. It's just as good as Suite Africaine.

In Holland, on BVHaast, is a fantastic disc and a great place to start exploring the Kollektief. That said, I haven't felt compelled to seek out too many other discs by the WBK. My impression has been that they do what they do very well, but I don't need to own too many discs of them doing it.

Any chance the East Coast tour will expand any further and hit Boston or Burlington, VT? I just ordered both of your discs based on the reviews I've been reading. I'm looking forward to hearing them.

FS/FT: Bill Evans - At Shelly's Manne-Hole K2
John B replied to John B's topic in Offering and Looking For...
You are not late yet. This one is still available. -
I'm playing Glasgow Monday at work with my office door open and a woman from the department in front of me stopped by to ask who it was because they want to buy a copy. I think they can only hear snippets of his piano playing, so I'm going to lend them the discs so they can hear his vocals before deciding to buy a copy. I also had to explain that they most likely would not find a copy of this at the music store at the local mall. Edited to add that I've listened to this set daily since it arrived. I really like this one a lot.

I have a sealed copy of the K2 of Bill Evans - At Shelly's Manne-Hole for sale or for trade. $6 plus shipping or I would be happy to trade for a comparable disc. Thanks for bumping this up! I just listened to the archived show for the first time and really enjoyed it. Thanks for putting this show together, GoM. Now off to CDBaby to buy a disc or two of Hewitt's. -
up for some air... I bought Glasgow Monday and have been really enjoying it. This is the 2cd live set recorded in May of 2005 and features the representative from Corwood exclusively on piano. The piece is referred to as "the Cell," and the tracks are parts one through nine of the suite. Very nice. Quiet, contemplative and perhaps even somber. This is the "prettiest" Jandek album I have heard, by far. I hope he keeps releasing live albums with varying lineups and concepts rather than the studio albums which have not been as succesful as one might hope.

D.D. - I just tried to send you a PM replying about Zebulon Pike but your inbox is full. Bagatellen has a Jason Bivins penned review of several new Frode Gjerstad discs posted here. Frode himself is the most recent person to post a reply.

Yes. I really enjoy it a lot. Kidd is a lot more melodic and "gentler" than I have heard in the past. All in all I think it is a beautiful disc. Hamid switches to the tabla and William puts down the bass in favor an African lute, which I know isn't everyone's cup of tea here. Since I was ordering directly from Aum I also picked up Triptych Myth - The Beautiful. Very nice. Cooper Moore has been releasing some wonderful music over the past few years. I'm really looking forward to picking up a copy of Topography very soon.

Any chance you'll tag along for the VT show? Have you tried contacting Higher Ground (highergroundmusic.com) yet? They would be my first stop. There is a new-ish cafe in Montpelier booking shows these days. They might be worth a call: http://www.langdonstreetcafe.com/booking.html

Even with the free shipping I think Potlatch titles are less expensive through Erstwhile, unless you were just buying one disc. I'm still making my way through the Georg Graewe discs I bought during Chuck's sale on Okka disks. Up now is the Anthony Braxton / Graewe - Duo (Amsterdam) 1991. Another excellent disc. After that one I'll be spinning Evan Parker & Joe McPhee - Chicago Tenor Duets and Dave Rempis & Tim Daisy - Back to the Circle for the first time.

One of the members of MMJ is a regular poster over at JC. I've never heard their music, as far as I know.

I'll have to buy the disc on FMR soon. It seems like it would be something I will really enjoy. The Weston disc on Emanem looks interesting, to. Right now I am listening to Evan Parker & Georg Gräwe - Unity Variations. Another excellent release. So far I prefer Melodie und Rhythmus, but they are both very, very good releases. Does anyone know of a good source for FMR discs in the U.S.? My usual sources seem to be coming up empty.

Still Available: That Devilin Tune: $50 shipped.
John B replied to AllenLowe's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Great set and great service from Allen. I'm still on disc one but I'm already loving this release. -
anyone have any observations regarding this one, I like this disc a lot. I think it is better than Twenty Minute Cliff. I seem to recall some people, probably in the Funny Rat thread, were not so keen on it, so you might want to do a search.

Thanks to Chuck Nessa's sale on Okka Disk titles I've been exploring more of Georg Grawe's work. Right now I'm listening to Georg Grawe, Frank Gratkowski, Kent Kessler, Hamid Drake - Melodie & Rhythmus, and am very impressed. This is an excellent album. Very different than what I usually expect from Hamid Drake. Much less "funky" and more supportive. I haven't been focusing on Kessler, but Grawe and Gratkowski are both in top form. Very impressive. Up next is Evan Parker / Georg Grawe - Unity Variations.

The packaging was fine and the discs arrived very quickly. These are fantastic prices and Chuck provides top-notch service.
