A friend of mine has been raving about Jaga Jazzist and their The Stix album (link). Listening to the music on the ninja tune site, I must admit: I am impressed. Sorta like a modern day Zappa on downers. I didn't know they had a new one coming out. Thanks for the heads up! I have heard their first full length - A Livingroom Hush - and really enjoyed it. today: Hash Jar Tempo - Well Oiled Dave Holland Big Band - What Goes Around Dollar Brand w/ Johnny Dyani - Good News From Africa Reid Anderson - The Vastness of Space Music From the Morning of the World: Balinese Gamelan Romano/Sclavis/Texier - Suite Africaine Omar Sosa - Sentir

the Burlington show will be as a quartet: Andrew Hill, piano Greg Tardy, tenor sax and clarinet John Hebert, bass Nasheet Waits, drums

My wife and I are going to see him at the Discover Jazz festival in Burlington VT the first week in June. I am really looking forward to seeing him live for the first time!
-
the solo London concert is phenomenal. I wish he would update his site with more live tracks as time goes by.

you can get this one here: http://www.musicgraveyard.com/newage.html form $12.99 plus shipping. shipping runs about $3.50 for one disc. I ordered a copy a while back and it was not a cutout.

Albums you wish were on CD domestically...

I'll second Mother Ship and, off the top of my head, add: Warne Marsh - Ne Plus Ultra -
What they said. Seriously, though. Red Sulphur Sky is a great disc! I agree with Chuck that you should check out his own compositions before heading over to Yo Miles!. Start with the Pi disc Wadada Leo Smith's Golden Quartet - Year of the Elephant. That will probably keep you coming back for more. The last issue of Suignal to Noise had a really nice interview with him, as well. Honestly, if you can grab a copy of RSS easily just go for it. You won't regret it.

Had to vote for the 2headedfreap! I know this one has NO chance in this poll (how many people have actually managed to track down copies?) but it is a lot of fun.

lots of new OmniTone added, but not listed in the "New" section yet. search by label. also, both Jimmy Woods discs discussed in another forum are available.

emusic now has Conflict!, with bonus tracks.
-
for those of you on emusic, they have Awakening! available for download. After reading this thread I really hope they add Conflict soon.

My wife wants to get a copy of the Muppet Movie soundtrack on CD for a friend's child and I thought I would be able to pick up a used copy cheap. Wow, was I wrong...this one is going for $50 on ebay and half.com. Apparently this went OOP 10 years ago and has never been reissued on cd. Does anyone have a copy they would be willing to part with for a reasonable price or would be willing to cdr a copy for me? thanks!

the Yo Miles! set is wonderful, but disc 2 runs over 80 minutes, so it is a nightmare to burn onto a regular cdr. I still haven't gotten around to trying to trim one of the tracks down a bit.

if you are a fan of Fela Kuti check out a disc by the Daktaris called Soul Explosion. The band went on to become the Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra. Great stuff!
-
thanks for the solo CT recs! I think I know where I can pick up both Willisau and Tree of Life. I think I will save Silent Tongues for later.

I'm normally not a big fan of alternate takes clustered together, but the Rivers material is so different, take to take, that it makes for fascinating listening of artists developing a piece in studio. Sam needs to get more credit. I just spun Crystals earlier today and always find his writing to be very fresh. great minds think alike!

I'm a big fan of the alternates on the Sam Rivers Mosaic.

any recommendations for essential solo discs by Cecil? I have heard Air Above Mountains and want to hear more of his solo work, but am not sure where to look next.

This was posted back on the BNBB back in the day but the deals are still there. I bought a few discs from them a while back and had good service. A few of the less than common titles I spotted: Ken McIntyre - Complete United Artists Sessions 2CD $12.99 George Russell - The African Game $6.99 Lou Donaldson - Mr. Shing-a-Ling $7.99 Donald Byrd - Blackjack $7.99 Andrew Hill - Eternal Spirit $7.99 Reuben Wislon - Blue Mode $6.99 Sherman Irby - Full Circle $7.99 Donald Byrd - Fancy Free $6.99 Bob Brookmeyer - Traditionalism Revisited $6.99 I figured someone might be looking for a few of these and these prices seem hard to beat. The discs I received were not cutouts.

I *could* have told him to start with the Nuclear War EP. It is a riot hearing all of those little kids chanting "it's a motherfucker!" behind Ira's deadpan delivery. I still believe that neither President YLT / NWHD nor Ride the Tiger would be the best place to start with YLT but, as I said, eventually you'll want them all. Best advice, since AfricaBrass is on emusic is just download everything. All of their albums have moments of brilliance

I thought it would be good to have one place to note recommendations or alerts for new releases for those of us who are on emusic. They just added Frank Lowe's Black Beings on ESP, which has the distinction of being William Parker's first recorded session. I just downloaded it and will probably spin it for the first time tonight.

So far I have heard three out of the first five Pi records releases (Wadada Leo Smith's Year of the Elephant and Henry Threadgill's Everybody's Mouths a Book and Up Popped the Two Lips) and have been very impressed by the amazing music they are putting out. I think I will try to track down their Roscoe Mitchell disc next. Has anybody else checked out this label? Based on their track record so far I am very impressed and am thinking they might become one of those labels whose every release is worthy of attention. If you haven't heard the Wadada and the Threadgill's I recommend rectifying the situation asap. Great, great music.

are you on emusic? they have all of their albums up for download. I started with I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One and was sold. Most people seem to recommend Painful or Electr-O-Pura as the best albums to start with. You really can't go wrong with any of those albums. To start, I would avoid Ride that Tiger, President YLT/New Wave Hot Dogs, Genius + Love and Nothing Turned Itself Inside out, although you will probably want to grab all of them, eventually. As far as Spacemen 3 goes I enjoy listening to Spiritualized (who still do "Walking with Jesus" live) but Sonic Boom lost me a while back with his Spectrum and E.A.R albums. I would love to hear more live recordings from the Playing With Fire tour.

Playing with fire would get the nod from me, if only for the live version of "Suicide."
