  1. Ken (and Fasstrack), I wish I could agree. With me, you are definitely preaching to the choir. However, I don't see any inclination from my kids or their friends that Hi Fi is a desirable thing to them. The young people I know aspire to getting a good computer. When I was a lad (late 60's, early 70's) I and most of my friends looked forward to getting a good stereo. Maybe mosty of us never made it but everybody had at least a few lps (and casettes and 8 tracks). And we got togther after school and listened to music. Now, all the kids want to play video games. I never hear my kids listening to the radio and they don't hit me up for money for cd's (for everything else though). Somehow it seems the music my son likes is generally in connection with his interest in Anime, people post videos online with music that they make as little Anime tributes. I let my son use my stereo when he has friends over but he rarely does, he just keeps his laptop nearby in case he wants to play something for them. Instead of asking for a cd player, he wants an external hard drive. Go figure.
  2. Has Pepper Adams date on Spotlight, Ephemera, ever been out on cd?
  3. I see from Allmusic that Phil Woods' "Live at the Showboat" has been releases on cd just this year, missing 4 cuts though, including one that clocks in at over 20 minutes. Well, a little poking around shows that it was issued a couple of years ago. Amazon shows an import due to be released in August that may have the all the cuts.
  4. Uh...there was one other small problem with the '75 World Series for those of us living in the Northeast.

  7. Check out Hank Roberts on Phil Haynes fine cd, Free Country. Also, waiting for the Andorran pirates to release Fred Katz's work on Decca from the 50's.
  8. Jim, obviously the human element factors into these guidelines, what I was getting at with the symptoms for two days is that you shouldn't wait for symptoms to become acute before looking for care, which was, I think, something that Berigan referred to. Hey, I advocate getting attention right away, just not firstly at the ER if possible. I am not taking a company line on seeking care, just use common sense (getting advice on when to seek medical attention at a Jazz forum might not qualfy ). Also, if you have a doctor worth his salt, and you describe the symptoms as you did, and he or she doesn't refer you to the ER if they can't see you right away, then, again, you probably should get a new Dr. On a related note, I personally would seek immediate attention if I had a bug bite of unknown origin, particularly if I lived in a Lyme disease endemic area, which I do. I have a 16 year old son who has been unable to attend school for 5 years due to a case of Lyme disease that went undiagnosed for, we believe, about a year.
  9. I am kind of surprised to see everyone recommend the ER. Don't you folks have an Internist or Family Practice physician you can call. Please don't tell me that those of you with kids don't have Pediatricians either. Care rendered in the ER is pretty much the most expensive setting available. If you have a doctor who cannot see you within a day or two for a sick visit then you should probably switch doctors. Most of the health plans I deal with (I am a group health insurance broker) will deny claims for innappropriate us of the ER, one typical criteria (criterion?) is symptoms for more than 48 hours.
  10. I know Joe Pass found a source of steady dates with Pablo but did this really represent "serious money"? My general understanding is that working jazz mucians make the bulk of their income from live appearances, record dates, and airplay of same, serving more as advirtising than signifacant income. Can record dates with an independent label provide a livable wage?
  11. I've had fun with a program called MediaFace. Reasonably easy to use, has templates, can paste pictures ect. Good for a nontechnical person such as myself.

  21. I picked the new Dave Schumacher disc, Endangered Species, on Summit on Monday and have had it in the player a lot since. Dave is a new name to me, he has two prior releases to his credit. I love the baritone and this guy delivers the goods, a great tone and sound in a modern mainstream setting. Most of the disc features a quartet with bari and trombone frontline with organ and drums. If you dig Glenn Wilson, Nick Brignola and Ronnie Cuber you will like this disc. You can ceck out mp3 samples at his website, www.daveschumacher.com (not to confused with another sax playing dave schumacher at www.davidschumacher.com). The only sidemen I had heard much of before was Jimmy Cobb, who plays on the organ pieces, and tenormen Ned Goold and Jerry Weldon, who play on one cut which also features Schumacher on tenor. According to the liner notes, Schumacher has been holding down the baritone chair in Harry Connick's band since 1990.I liked it so much I promptly ordered his other two releases. Check him out.
