  1. After the 1952 engagement, Charlie Parker supposedly said to Dizzy Gillespie: "You better look out, there’s a little white cat out on the West Coast whose gonna eat you up.” When was Bird ever wrong musically? Chet Baker could play, IMO. And while I prefer his playing, his singing was a lot better than Kenny Dorham's.
  2. Classics 1465-1469 were never released but were supposed to be the next batch: 1465 Benny Goodman 1952-1954 1466 Sonny Rollins 1951-1954 1467 Buddy DeFranco 1952-1953 1468 Pearl Bailey 1950-1953 1469 Tommy Dorsey 1939-1940 It would have been a very useful batch. The Benny Goodman would have had the remaining recordings before the 12" LP era. The Buddy DeFranco would have had the remaining MGM recordings (with Kenny Drew, Jimmy Raney, Art Blakey etc). The TD would have completed his 30s recordings and started to delve into the 40s when he modernized his sound with the help of arrangers like Sy Oliver and later Bill Finegan. Some great soloists would arrive in the 40s also, including Buddy DeFranco! I'm not crazy about readily available material like the Rollins, but perhaps that would have sold. It's a shame this batch didn't come out. By the way, does anyone have info about what the next Blues & Rhythm titles would have been? The two last released were 5188 Sonny Boy Williamson 1953-1956 5189 Lonnie Johnson 1947-1948 but I'm thinking that they would mention in the booklet what the next titles were supposed to be.
  3. The slipcases must have been on American pressings only. I bought almost all VEEs new and sealed in Swedish stores and they never had slipcases. Later I picked up the Dinah Washington from an American seller and it had the slipcase. It was the first time I saw one.
  4. Diz Big Band has been out on a Japanese CD. Most of Jazz Recital is on the Mosaic, but not all of it, alas.
  5. Hank Jones recorded with Hot Lips Page and John Kirby's sextet in the mid-40s. He was in Andy Kirk's big band too. He's been around.
  6. Mine too! All of it is bought online though. By the way, I think I read that CD sales are up 9% so far this year in Sweden. A new law making it easier to track down and penalize illegal downloaders may have something to do with it.
  7. Well, most of it doesn't show anything at least...
  8. Hey, that's an album cover showing multiple images of the artist!
  9. Reissuing the Brubeck/Desmond again is indeed strange since it was an LPR not that long ago, which can be had for a modest sum from Amazon sellers. Not an exciting batch at all considering what Verve has in its vaults that never has been on CD.
  10. That's what I thought at first too, but then I discovered that the VEE includes her 1943 debut session for Keynote (Evil Gal Blues etc), which isn't on the Mercury box sets (which I have too). So then I decided to get the Dinah Washington VEE after all.
  11. Yes, and Desmond wasn't Jewish either. However, both have been mistaken for being it, and Desmond apparently thought himself that he was!
  12. Those Jewish musicians all look the same anyway. -_-
  13. You're so clever.
  14. Got a newsletter from Oldies today about the Fantasy Warehouse Clearance Sale. "Over 2,300 CDs" it says, and in big letters: "Don't be confused by the price, all CDs are brand new and sealed in original factory shrink wrap". Would be strange to send out a newsletter today and say that if they don't actually have or have access to the CDs. But what do I know? It's 6 days since I ordered and they still say that they ship in 1-3 days.
  15. I have kind of exhausted those I could think of now, but since you posted the Martino, how about this one!?
