  1. We have seen her before: WIM Vera Papadopoulou, Greece, 2160
  2. OP's earliest US sessions were in the duo format, until Barney Kessel was added in 1951 to make it a trio. All previously released material has been out on Classics, but if they could add the unissued tracks and make it the bestsounding release of this material so far, it would be a very interesting release of course. 3. It has happened several times before that in print Mosaics have sold for more on eBay. I think these may be cases when the buyers don't know about the Mosaic site; perhaps they check Amazon and think it's something that is out of print. Or they just like winning auctions!
  4. jazzdisco.org lists in their Blue Note discography what was on the Mosaics. Go to their 1939-1944 Blue Note Discography, search on "Mosaic MR6-109" and you will see what was on it.
  5. Yes, Zoot is worse than Chet. And as I mentioned in another thread, I think Chet is a better singer than Kenny Dorham too. But I'm thinking of the younger Chet; I haven't heard enough of how he sounded in later years.
  6. I've heard that that one features a totally cool version of "Pet Sounds" as an up-tempo bossa! Am listening to it now, and yes, it's there. He also takes on I Am A Walrus. JoAnne Brackeen is on this one, and she actually was on all 5 of McCoy's 1966-68 albums as she was a regular member of his group in those years. By the way, the liner notes writer is none other than ... Chris Albertson! He even manages to mention Bessie Smith... He also says that his particular favourite is McCoy's own Salem Soul Song and I must agree that that one hits a really nice groove.
  7. I just happened to notice that Spider Man was reissued on CD again in December 2008 (I have the old CD). It's listed as in stock on hmv.co.jp so now you have the chance to get it. Hiroshi can probably provide it too.
  8. Yes, it is strange that Fantasy didn't even put out a Legends Of Acid Jazz twofer. Anyway, Soul Yogi recently appeared on a blog.
  9. You're right. I looked at some of them and they all say "Printed in USA". I do think they were regularly distributed here though, in which case they don't count as imports? In any case, the ones I bought in Sweden were sealed and had no slipcases. The plot thickens.
  10. But is it an EU pressing? If it is, it certainly complicates matters...
  11. Another elite footballer has died of a sudden heart attack. Espanyol's team captain Daniel Jarque, 26, died on his hotel room after a training, apparently in the middle of a phone conversation with his girlfriend, who is pregnant in the 8th month. He played in a match against Liverpool just a week before his death. This comes two years after Sevilla's Antonio Puerta, 22, died during a match.
  12. Sure there is: That it is small groups only is the reason why not the entire Jazz Recital is included. Personally I hate when Mosaic does that (and they have done it on other sets too). I prefer to burn box sets in album configuration and download and print cover art and I can't do that when the albums are incomplete. Chronological Classics had reached 1954 and was close to covering the missing 1955 tracks, but now they seem to have gone belly-up, so one can't get the missing tracks that way either. Oh well, it's not easy to be a jazz collector... That said, if it is the Mobley tracks you are after specifically, the good news is that both small group sessions he did with Diz are included complete. They were also on the last Classics CD. There is an ensemble vocal on Hey Pete, so chances are you can hear Hank singing somewhere in there too!
  13. Classics has released Tiny Grimes's complete 1944-1954 recordings on three CDs. It's in their Blues & Rhythm series though. By the way, Grimes's 1962 United Artists album which never has been on CD (and probably never will) recently appeared on a blog. I haven't listened to it yet, but I have liked all other Grimes I have heard.
  14. The big tragedy in that band occurred only one month later, when Chu Berry was killed in a car accident.
  15. After the 1952 engagement, Charlie Parker supposedly said to Dizzy Gillespie: "You better look out, there’s a little white cat out on the West Coast whose gonna eat you up.” When was Bird ever wrong musically? Chet Baker could play, IMO. And while I prefer his playing, his singing was a lot better than Kenny Dorham's.
  16. Classics 1465-1469 were never released but were supposed to be the next batch: 1465 Benny Goodman 1952-1954 1466 Sonny Rollins 1951-1954 1467 Buddy DeFranco 1952-1953 1468 Pearl Bailey 1950-1953 1469 Tommy Dorsey 1939-1940 It would have been a very useful batch. The Benny Goodman would have had the remaining recordings before the 12" LP era. The Buddy DeFranco would have had the remaining MGM recordings (with Kenny Drew, Jimmy Raney, Art Blakey etc). The TD would have completed his 30s recordings and started to delve into the 40s when he modernized his sound with the help of arrangers like Sy Oliver and later Bill Finegan. Some great soloists would arrive in the 40s also, including Buddy DeFranco! I'm not crazy about readily available material like the Rollins, but perhaps that would have sold. It's a shame this batch didn't come out. By the way, does anyone have info about what the next Blues & Rhythm titles would have been? The two last released were 5188 Sonny Boy Williamson 1953-1956 5189 Lonnie Johnson 1947-1948 but I'm thinking that they would mention in the booklet what the next titles were supposed to be.
