  1. No kidding. Look at the longish second reply: One would think a jazz historian would know what an LP is.
  2. It looks like a compilation of Decca and Urania material from early to mid 50s. The Decca material (1951-53) has been out in more complete form on Classics. The 1955 Urania album has been out on Fresh Sound and also Drive Archive, I think. So nothing new to CD here. The Urania album is actually one of the few Hawkins albums I don't have, so thanks for reminding me. I need to pick it up some day.
  3. Well, I thought that $1.99 per CD (plus $4.99 per shipment) wasn't so bad, considering that if I buy an OOP CD from an Amazon marketplace seller, I have to pay $6.89 per CD, and the sale price was good to begin with. However, when they charge shipping for 18 CDs they have cancelled, it gets very bad. That's 18 * $1.99 = $35.82 they have overcharged, which isn't a negligible amount. When they then neither answer e-mails nor refund, it gets really, really bad. I will have to contact my credit card company and see what they can do.
  4. They charged me for shipping for all titles I ordered including the ones they cancelled and never sent me. I have sent several e-mails to them over a week about this, both to orders@oldies.com and webmaster@oldies.com. No reply whatsoever so far and no refund. I may write more about this if it isn't rectified soon.
  5. Since I recently posted this quote in a Concord thread, I might just as well post it in a Blue Note thread: It is indeed ominous that they don't release anything during the 70th anniversary. If not then, they hardly will start again during the 71st. You can however get the Hank Mobley Quartet session through the Mobley Mosaic.
  6. Yes, that holds true for me. What hadn't come out on western CDs, I got on TOCJs. No need for me to get the Mobley Mosaic. I may miss a few alternate takes, but I can live with that. And I value having the original cover art etc.
  7. Chewy has become a middle-aged bearded record collector, that's what's happened!
  8. Yes, he lowered this world record with 0.11 too. And yet he has said that he isn't in good form for 200 m, since he hasn't had time to train endurance much this season. Will he go under 19 seconds when he is? The experts began to talk about his possibilities on 400 m. One does wonder what he could do there...
  9. Hey, that one has never been on CD before! Excellent news! Now, if the other Spencer they put out would have been Where I'm Coming From instead of Louisiana Slim it would have been even better. Louisiana Slim was on the Legends Of Acid Jazz twofer, whereas Where I'm Coming From also never has been on CD (although it is "available" on a blog). If this means the Japanese will put out more Prestige albums never on CD before in the future, I'm all for that. There are still many Fantasy never got around too, and I'm not counting on Con F. Cord to reissue them.
  10. Caster Semenya - man or woman? This 18-year-old "girl" crushed all competition on the 800 m final for women. Watch and see what you think. The race can be watched here if it stays up. The IAAF has now revealed that it will conduct a gender verification test on Semenya.
  11. It is possible that Coltrane later found Garland unsuitable for the new directions he was taking. He didn't use him on any session after 1958, for example. However, Garland recorded with Coltrane for Prestige after he had quit Miles's group, so the chronology of the music teacher's claim seems off in any case.
  12. Sorry, but here's the AMG review: This disc is a surprising success. Duke Ellington was somehow persuaded into revising and recording a dozen songs from the score of Walt Disney's Mary Poppins, and the results are actually quite memorable. With such soloists as altoist Johnny Hodges, baritonist Harry Carney, trumpeter Cootie Williams, tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves, clarinetist Jimmy Hamilton, and trombonist Lawrence Brown getting their spots, Duke Ellington & His Orchestra turn such songs as "A Spoonful of Sugar," "Chim Chim Cheree" (a much happier version than John Coltrane's), "The Life I Lead," and even "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" into swinging jazz.
  13. Wasn't there a Jackie McLean Pizza Company in a Simpsons episode? I think it has been mentioned before.
  14. And as I mentioned five years ago Mike Tyson's last(?) trainer was Freddie Roach. (Hey, I remembered that!)
  15. You exactly have his age - 91? Wow!
  16. From the Jermuk tournament - great photo of Boris Gelfand: and a funny sequence of Vasily Ivanchuk from the press conference. One can really sense how some computer idea is shown that he hadn't thought of:
  17. Incredible. Bolt lowered his own world record with 0.11 from 9.69 to 9.58! Gay ran his fastest race ever, finishing just 0.02 from the old world record, and yet he was outclassed.
  18. You're right about that. A dream final it has been called. Usain Bolt vs Tyson Gay vs Asafa Powell. Bolt is the favourite but who knows what will happen. Will we see a new world record?
  19. For really early Bill Evans, you may want to check out this CD: Very Early, Vol.1: 1943-1949 (don't know if this release has been discussed here before). I haven't gotten it myself yet, but it looks intriguing. Among other things one can hear him play boogie woogie and he was apparently at some point called Willie "Fingers" Evans!
  20. Has that been clear from the start? I hadn't seen any info about it when I ordered; I only learnt about it later here in this thread. I can't see anything about it on their site, and the e-mail I got from them doesn't say anything about it either. Instead it says "Don't be confused by the price, all CDs are brand new and sealed in original factory shrink wrap." I don't think "brand new" is a correct description when they have been intentionally damaged.
  21. You're right, and yet it is their 70th anniversary and all. I'm reminded of something Chuck wrote last year:
