  1. And if you have difficulties deciding who's your favourite...
  2. Sure, although not as number one. And let's not forget another great Smith: Tab Smith. And while we're at altoists not mentioned before in the thread: Earl Bostic. And John Jackson!
  3. Alto sax is my favourite jazz instrument, so there are many favourites, but number one can not be anyone but: Charlie Parker
  4. Funny that they were removed for the European reissue, considering that the non-US copyright expired over 30 years ago.
  5. There is a Birdland broadcast also given as c. June 1953, which has this group plus Charlie Parker and Joe Carroll. Lord says about the Birdland date "Sahib Shihab (bar) or poss Bill Graham (bar)" but also "Other possible recording dates are c. January, 1953 or late March, 1953", in which case it would be Graham.
  6. This seems to have been it. Next time Gillespie recorded, it was for Norman Granz, and the Verve association would then last into the 60s. Releasing a 78 on a small label must have been particularly difficult in 1953 when the market quickly was switching to LPs. Probably an extreme rarity even in its time, yes.
  7. But why a new cover for this?
  8. Today's Jazz Thursday saw these Newport Jazz Festival releases: Jul 8, 1972 Giants of Jazz (Gillespie, Stitt, Monk, Blakey etc) Herbie Mann Quintet Les McCann
  9. I wanna hear all unissued/rejected Blue Note sessions.
  10. Don't forget Herbie Handcock and Freddie Select!
  11. The very same sentence has two other spelling errors. They managed to get both words in the title wrong! "Tompeta" should be "Trompeta", and "Toccatta" should be "Toccata". The original CD spelt it "Trumpeta" on the spine, of course...
  12. Sure! Track 4: Miles Davis - My Funny Valentine (from COOKIN') Track 5: Why Was I Born - Kenny Burrell and John Coltrane (from their s/t album) Track 11: Round About Midnight - Thelonious Monk (from THELONIOUS HIMSELF) Thanks for the info! I have those three albums, so I can now replicate the compilation. FWIW, I also came to the conclusion that The Peacocks was by Alden and not Breakstone, but by then Jim R had already posted the correct identification. I usually prefer uptempo stuff, or at least I thought I did, but this compilation worked really well, I must say.
  13. By the way, this was a very nice compilation. May I ask what the three tracks you identified were?
  14. Track 10: Charlie Byrd - Corcovado (1991) [From the album The Bossa Nova Years. Ken Peplowski on tenor sax.]
  15. Track 9: Scott Hamilton - Angel Eyes (1992) [From the album Scott Hamilton With Strings]
  16. Track 8: Bill Evans - Blue In Green (1959) [From the album Portrait In Jazz]
  17. Track 7: Stan Getz - Spring Is Here (1982) [From the album Blue Skies]
  18. Track 3: Gene Harris - Everything Happens To Me (1994) [From the album Funky Gene's]
  19. Track 2: Duke Ellington - Prelude To A Kiss (1957) [From the album Ellington Indigos. Johnny Hodges on alto sax.]
  20. The Lord discography is missing tons of CD reissues unfortunately. Including high profile (?) stuff like Mosaic boxes, Blue Note reissues et cetera. Somebody hasn't been doing his job. The Willie Smith session (minus the alternate) was reissued on the Ocium CD A Sound Of Distinction (OCM 0013) in 2001. It is a very useful CD that includes all of Willie Smith's leader sessions (except the 1965 LP). It also includes Juan Tizol'z 1946 Keynote session on which Smith was a sideman.
  21. I pasted a news item text in Swedish and pressed Analyze. Result: David Foster Wallace
