  1. I've been listening to a lot of anthologies lately and it came to me-- how about a Mosaic Select of the PJ "Jazz West Coast" discs? 5 LPs on 3 CDs should work OK. I'd miss the cover art, though!
  2. How about "The Modern Jazz Quartet at the Music Inn, v.1" with Jimmy Giuffre? And another vote for the Concord Kamucas.
  3. You have to hope someone at Universal/Verve realizes that in 7 years all their 50s recordings will be in the public domain in Europe. I'm happy they've picked up the pace of reissues a bit from a few years ago, but at this rate a lot of great stuff will still be in the vaults when the Definitives/Classics/etc. start taking up the market. I hope they start licencing more (and not just to Mosaic) before that happens. It's better for them because they get paid, it's better for us because we might get better mastering.
  4. I don't have any inside info, but considering recent Columbia/Sony reissues (i.e. the Armstrong Hot Fives, Miles at the Blackhawk), it seems likely.
  5. According to Jazzmatazz (another big thanks for that!), Columbia is coming out with a Brubeck box set in September: Dave Brubeck - For All Time - 5 CDs (Columbia/Legacy) Sept 23 — boxed set of "Time Out," "Time Further Out," "Time Changes," "Time In," and "Countdown: Time in Outer Space" — all feature bonus tracks except for "Time Out"
  6. The Chico Hamilton jazz soundtrack was featured in the "Vinyl Freak" column in the July 2003 issue of downbeat. Thanks for the info on The subterraneans. I'll have to look up that anthology. Anyone else know of any great unreissued soundtracks?
  7. Another vote for a Pacific Jazz Sweets Edison select-- maybe paired with his Roulette LPs. I had another idea for a "mixed" select while reading in downbeat about the Chico Hamilton "Jazz themes from the Sweet Smell of Success" LP. How about a Select of jazz soundtracks? Plenty of great West Coast playing on soundtracks. How about "The Subterraneans" with Gerry Mulligan, Art Pepper, Andre Previn & Art Farmer, or "Gone with the wave" on Colpix with Lalo Schiffrin, Shelly Manne & Laurindo Almeida?
  8. Dustygroove lists it as a future release for later in June and you can sign up to be notified when it comes in. dustygroove.com
  9. According to CD Universe, Duke Ellington's Treasury Shows, Vol. 7 will be available in the US on June 3. I love this series, war bond ads and all!
  10. The new Blanton Webster discs are not perfect, but a very big improvement on the 80s set.
  11. I've been holding off on going the Classics/Neatwork route in the hope that Sony or Mosaic or someone puts together a decent and comprehensive box. Meanwhile, I'll cast one more vote for the Columbias with their better notes.
  12. I'll sure miss Teddy Edwards. Saw him live a number of times & he was always a joy! "Smooth sailing" is a great session and it shows he went out at the top of his game. I'd like to also recommend "Ladies man" (also on High Note) and "The legend of Teddy Edwards" soundtrack album (on the Danish Cope Records label), both recorded in 2000.
  13. My recollection from the BNBB was that they were planning a second volume, but maybe I missed the post you mention. I wouldn't mind hearing less jazzy stuff from these guys-- any idea what they do on the remaining Nocturne material? Pop instrumentals? Pop vocals?
  14. I love this set-- including the Levy & Rowles material. Anyone have any idea when volume 2 is coming out?
  15. I've been listening to this set all day. Sudhalter was right-- Purvis was a terrifc player. This set includes a lot of pretty lame pop and novelty stuff, but Purvis blasts out of the murk on a regular basis!
