  1. Man that's just freakin' terrible!!!! The distortion goes from the start of "Rock" to about 00:15 and peaks at about ten seconds. I guess that's why they threw the caveat warning into the booklet that there is "organ distortion throughout this set". WTF... if I want organ distortion I'll reply to some of that e-mail spam I get!!! I recall no such thing on the TOCJ (that now resides somewhere between here and reindeer-land that I stupidly sold off, but was never received, to a board member). So are Ron and the boys playing salt-water-taffy-store with the tapes or what? And I thought it sounded terrific when I first put on this set with discs two and three.
  2. Scrawled thru Dusty Groove and see they have raised the prices of these newest issues to $27. Yikes!! They are now about ten bucks more than Hiroshi, with shipping, for just two discs and it goes up from there. Buyer beware! early records
  3. LOL...nice example of the pot calling the kettle, black. perplexed as to what some people find funny? lots of great reading in there ubu. thanks for the work.
  4. Having only heard "Minor Swing" on the DIW and "Congo Chant" on Blue Planet Man, listening to the originals right now is the coolest! B)
  5. Yeah go ahead and pick an Anthony Braxton AOW?
  6. I was bothered by these captions. The whole reason that the blues is, is that you need to listen hard. Not have it just put out there for us pasties to be able to 'see' what we are hearing. Truly better than most of what my 5 channels have to offer. I'll be watching and looking forward to more.
  7. I have several of these as well. The Wilen and Jaspar from ubu's above are tops for me. Fine stuff and extremely cheap when they first came around at $7.99. I enjoy the 'cinema' series as well and am wondering if anyone has thoughts on the last volume #4?
  8. Great thought for a thread. Thanks as well. Both of our daughters are now taking piano and the sounds of morning practice is such a beautiful thing right before you start screaming at them to get ready for school. A few years ago when my oldest was about 5 I had to educate her about the care and treatment of compact discs after she frisbeed the 'Jungle Book' soundtrack across the floor, rendering only "I Wanna Be Like You" completely unplayable. I showed her how to properly handle these things and played the skipping track a few times just for good measure. Well a couple weeks later we're sitting in the music room and I had some Grant Green playing. Sure enough he gets into one of his tension builders and my daughter happily admonishes me for scratching my CDs too. The education from both sides never ends ..thank God!
  9. A little birdie sez that the Pattons should ship by weeks end.
  10. I usually grunt to predict the next move!
  11. Hey wait a minute. I was listening to Equilibrium this morning as well. How'd I get your keys? Specifically a Thirsty Ear mix MD: Ibid, Désmarches, Ibid, Places I've Never Been, Space Shipp, Staph, It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, World, D's Choice, Reactive Switching Strategies, Stream Light, Equilibrium, Vamp To Vibe, Cohesion, Rocket Shipp, Select Mode 1, A Knot In Your Bop, The Root, The Key.
  12. ss1, Wee Hoo....So we finally get a Brownies game on the tube out here and in the third quarter my 5 year old's on the phone with her grandad in Ohio and I ask her to ask him "...what's with this Holcomb guy?" and through the phone the reply is "He stinks!" Well not more than a half an hour later my kids get to see me jumpin' around the living room just like the old days!! Dems da Dawgs we love!
  13. Has anyone heard any of the discs from the series? The Wenders directed "Soul of a Man" looks very interesting. I've always loved Garland Jeffreys...Raitt & Wilson in their 'element'... and hearing some Ulmer and Ribot would be good, too. I very much look forward to this series.
  14. Unfortunately I know many by heart but I did look these up, albeit under incandescent lighting.
  15. Just to settle the argument the Pantone colors for the Rudy Van Gelder Series disc labels are as follows: Domestic RvGs- PMS 2738 Japanese RvGs- PMS 2728 New Issue RvGs- PMS 285
  16. Skimmed through the posts but whatever you do DO NOT!!!! use Philips CDRs. I've had the tops (where de info iz) peel like foil from a Wrigleys gum wrapper. Datz a no gouda. Go American Digital for all your archival needs.
  17. congrats Jim....looks like you'll be needing another gig-rigg!
  18. Yeah, 'Raining on the Moon' is a wacky fit. It sort of reminds me of the fist time I heard Cassandra Wilson with Threadgill's New AIR band. Now hearing Wilson's voice fresh, previous to all the new white blues of her modern days, was something to get enthused about. Maybe Leena Conquest will disband from the hip hop and come up with a great record of her own. She seems to have that beautiful Betty Carter / Carmen Lundy frog going for her.
  19. Anyone tried one of these Chemex caraffes? I found a new one with the leftovers of someones yard sale and nabbed it for free. I've tried to get it to work with just regular filters but just curious if anyone has any tips. Looks to be an artful way of brewing.
  20. I love how AMG lists Diamanda Galas in the 'similar artist' categorie on Lee's page. (insert Galas smiley) Does anyone know if the sonics have been upgraded since that RCA Novus re-issue of the Blake / Lee from back in the eighties?
  21. ...and another vote of thanks for Hans who's hipped many a BBer to Mr. Tanno! Might the rabid collectors hoist J.A.W. upon their shoulders like Kramer did Lombardi.
  22. Anybody heard this new one yet from Marty? Taborn with Ehrlich's alto ?. Here is Bruce's DMG review: "MARTY EHRLICH - Line on Love (Palmetto 2015) Featuring Marty on alto sax & bass clarinet, Craig Taborn on acoustic piano, Michael Formanek on contrabass and Billy Drummond on drums. This is the second superb release from Marty's current quartet and once again it deals with his more refined and immensely lyrical side. Marty's exquisite writing and pure, rich and haunting tone on sax and bass clarinet, have never sounded better. He has chosen the perfect rhythm team to make this effort all the more magical and sublimely transcendent. On "Hymn", Craig repeats just four hypnotic notes as Marty floats above sailing on the wind. "Like I Said" is a majestic and powerful piece, with the great rhythm team burning below as Marty soars high above with Michael taking the first great and inspired bass solo. On the title track, Craig plays some of the finest, richest and most riveting piano I've heard him play, slowly building to a enchanting conclusion while Marty's sax reaches deep to unleash his pure, crying tone. The quartet swings hard and quick on "Julian's Theme" which burns profusely, the bass and drums pushing and pulling the powerful current, but then play tight fractured rhythms during the great swirling piano solo. 'Line on Love' is a most refreshing and exquisite gem on all counts and one of the elegant releases of the year so far. "
  23. Hiroshi Tanno EARLY RECORDS His delivery to the east coast is about 5-7 days max and the prices are a few bucks less per disc than DGA with shipping. Easy w/ PayPal. Packed with perfection!! I've only taken 'Judgement! + 1' from the list. It is great sonically- a bit more tape hiss on some of the extremely silent parts but seems to whip the older issue as that one was laid down to laser at an extremely low volume. Plus it's the essential Hill IMB.
  24. In the spooky, but Twin Peaxy mode, you might check in on Barry Adamson. I'd certainly sample first but there is great stuff underneath some, at times, pretty lame voice-overs. When he gets into a groove without any monkey business it's just beautiful. (Of course my caveat here is that I've passed on all the Adamsons I had ways back.) As for perfectly noir, but probably never find-able, would be Ran Blake's "Vertigo". He does some wonderful things with Hermann's various scores and more. I believe he may also have more spooky stuff among his other releases (tips?). His essential duets with Jeanne Lee are perfectly dark. John Lurie's misc sound-tracky works might also help. While "Down by Law" is not necessarily haunted it has that Lynch-y feel. Even some of that "freshly-squeezed-audrey" finger-poppin' swank thrown in. Then there's that modern cool smokey spoken drivel that Patrica Barber puts out. It does give me the willies so maybe that's spooky, too. Good start-up thread here.
