I'm confused. I see you have clarified yourself in the just edited intro post. ??? I guess I could have edited the post with my error too and then made everyone not know wtf Bertrand was talking about? The initial post was regarding the "sound of these two discs" to paraphrase memory... Well obviously not hesitating, essential and some other positive adjectives are more about the whole of these than just the "sound" of course. But now that I really "sound" like an idiot on this thread I guess I'll just tell you that they both suck and that you should maybe buy some Walter Wanderly instead.

You are correct, Bertrand. I had no idea that "Jimmy Anderson" was not the sometime poster and engineer magnifico. It's been about five years since i had read Pekar's notes for this and he mentions nothing of the saxophonist in his text but the last credit reads: "Dedicated to out friend, Jimmy Anderson". Thanks for pointing that out and correcting my assumption.

Both "sound" fantastic as the latter title is homage to Jim Anderson who recorded the two for DIW. And if you have a chance the original gatefold sleeves are beautiful for having a few of Wolff's color work represented in glorious high gloss. I would not hesitate on 'Minor Swing' one moment. Essential stuff. Don't be put off by Zorn here as he only really takes his "liberties" on the first cut "The Way I Feel". (he's only producer of the 'JA' disc) And it is not the same show as on the PaddleWheel/Evidence 'Blue Planet Man'. The star of the show here is Ed Cherry. The guy is so on it's ridiculous. As is Kenny Wolleson on drums. 'This One's for J.A.' for me is of lesser quality performance-wise. A mellower mood that rides nicely without many fierey moments. Dave Hubbard, the saxophonist, doesn't quite kick it. Reminds me a bit of the playing on some of the late BN stuff such as 'Accent...' and 'Memphis...'. It is though absolutely stunning in resolution. If it is Big John's swan song then...? These DIWs recorded by Anderson will make your system happy. The only distortion you may encounter here are your windows.

Grachan Moncur sound
Man with the Golden Arm replied to chris's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I've always had utmost respect for Claude's ears here and on the other board. And still do. But I feel that this set in particular did not warrant the keeping of the old issues once you got them all in one place. Sure the McLeans might have sounded a tad better via the TOCJs but having the tracking mistakes solved from the "One Step Beyond" sessions is worth the go if you have the old US version. I had upgraded to the JRVG of that 'OSB' which was superb, but after hearing the subtle differences compared to the Select the $35 I ebayed it for more that made this set worth the upgrade charge of $4 bucks. Plus the groove on Hipgnosis' title track is killin'. I would not hesitate for sound here alone especially if you don't own Moncur's "Evolution". Now regarding the crappola on Patton's "The Way I Feel" via Select... -
AB, I've been curious as to the whereabouts of Cat Shatner and may think he may be over the border residing in 'undergroundagent's' newest avatar:

ooh yeah i like that. kind of that columnar elementary school test where you draw the diagonal lines in between each corresponding answer.

The all "Hello Kitty" thread...
Man with the Golden Arm replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
not so fast to make fun-sies of this insitution there birthday couw. granted miss kitty has trumped heidi as the axis' character of choice. thanks for posting this RT. the line about the precursor to all of this felinity- the girl with the strawberry on her head from '74 - was a revelation. my first job out of school was at the creative division that brought the world Strawberry Shortcake (endlessly licensed and re-issued). i recall the big guns were embroiled in endless legal wranglings over just who created with Miss Shortcake: an in-house artist or a greeting card freelancer who took some direction for a side job. this was obviously long before the information mania that we have today and it is now revealed here on the Organissimo that it was the Japanese that beat all to the punch. not really certain as to why i posted but i can do that in this thread. -
Happy Birthday Couw

Happy Birthday Jim!!! & while googling for some sort of birthday funny i did find this - certainly your kind of party! -
Since KB is back, I'll stay away and let him post the "news".

Jim, try it again! my first time through had that cut with about 10 seconds remaining. when i played it for some guys at the studio it has the most beautifully perfect ending. i only wish i could figure out how to get it to be loaded as more than a thumbnail. it reminded me a bit of the rhapsody in blue short from fantasia 2000. the hirschfeld inspired piece. now from what i hear that maya program is one intense piece of software to master. anyone ever tried?

Harold_Z, someone did mention Mancini...that bit of Touch of Evil honky tonk to it and he would toss a fuzzy geetar in there.
-
Cut #12 on disc one sounds like two cuts? Not sure if they run into other on vinyl but the later's got Threadgill's sound before he ran away to the circus. Definitely something from the Nessa bag.
-
i'm gonna wager that that IS "ask me now". hits it for me right off the bat. and edit...jim loves a supersize entendre...esp w/ pork.
-
harold, i think you are correct ( the 50s ? of course not) and that linker posted does not sound like the player on disc. but do you agree that it may be THAT band were talking about. i went back to AMG and don't see much about those sides from the period of this sound. i know that's cheating but i'm antsy. the more i listen to that cut the more i gotta have it.
-
the soundtracky blues D1-T4 is still bugging me and I'm wondering if that wacky geetar solo might be... and from another comp I have I talked myself into the album being "TGWWoQJ"? but I know you have said you admonish guessers so go on.

"you got one crazy ass stereo man" (or something to that affect) Monk to Feather...Downbeat!

Hey Jim, after reading all the posts thus far and driving myself a bit nuts might it be a "breeziness" to the thread that ties these together?

What do You Get Out of the Blindfold Test?
Man with the Golden Arm replied to Dan Gould's topic in Blindfold Test
Well, thanks to Dan and now to JSangry (my first test) for this opportunity. It drives me absolutely nuts that I can walk into the shop at the studio where I work at any moment and hear either oldies, not so old disco or a rare something urban, and for some reason am able to sing along with most all of it! Turning kindred ears on to something extraordinary is what it's all about. One of the reasons I think we all frequent this board. Being a kid and running home from the drug store with my neighbor to crack open a new Paul Revere and the Raiders album to now being able to burn high quality discs, send them around the world and let those kindred ears have at it...a beautiful thing! I've been spinning Jim's discs constantly for the past two days just reveling (with open minded snobbery) in the fact that all around me are so excited about the new Dave Matthews CD. -
where's shrugs? he'd of aced this thing and threw the curve way outta wack! ...and my guess for track 12 on disc one: "wild chimpanzees of the ruwenzori" and is that the dianne fossey mastering? the guys at the studio asked if i had a bunch of chickens in my room.
