  1. ...and alkyhaul don't seem to help!
  2. You need to get yourself a catalog straight away. They will be happy to send you many. That way you can relax and do your business while you find out more about theirs'. As for the box issue, all have come in the classic big foot square since the beginning and you can still pull out all the discs, bind them up and stash away the cases. At $16.00 a piece... they certainly are competitive with other labels who's lists these days rise to $18 +. I think collectively if you take an example of say the "50's Mobley Sessions" you end up getting NINE albums worth of somewhat un-available music for less than a C-note. Plus you get a perfectly done booklet that you may peruse ad nauseum, or while sitting.
  3. Beware the release on the Italian 'HitLand' label. Otherwise this is as essential as the Blakey.
  4. They are of course bugs of the sea. A half century ago it was not deemed fit for brahman consumption and was the staple of the lesser class. Was it not a law that slave owners were not allowed to feed the slaves lobster more than once a week? Gimme some fra diavlo anyday! Ugly or not!!!
  5. I was going to pass this one by as I thought that "Sunrise over Brooklyn" ten minute plus monotony just went on forever. After seeing JSngry's rec on this elsewhere I downloaded a few cuts from iTunes. I love how the 'avant-garbage' at the onset of "Intrigue in the House of India" leads into a frenetic cuban montuno (?) and lays open to the flute of Daniel Carter. The funky "Get Your Hand Off My Shoulder, Pig" and the Philly rave on "Get Modal" made my $2.97 very well spent.
  6. The next town up is readying for the greasy pole... where a bunch of Italian's wives and girlfriends keep thier fingers crossed.
  7. I've been looking for a freugalhorn but I can't find one cheap enough.
  8. is this a "poll" or a "pole" poll? edit: i just hope those babe zaharius people don't work at fastwomen.com!
  9. Chris, What's the secret to the brining? I made up some sauce this past weekend... heavy on the onion and granny smith apples with a bit of zing... and so much vinegar that you can't stick your head over the pot while it's cooking down. Got a big jar left over and would love to do up some ribs just like the Hole In The Wall. Never did ribs at home as I've always considered it to be a holy grail of sorts.
  10. Well if you don't have "Second Genesis" or "The Young Lions" ... then
  11. Nicely done! This was a great BFT for it certainly opened me up to more exploration as usual. F.E.S.!, and I have never heard Richie Beirach save for passings on the radio. I steered away from the second disc for the time being, looks like a killer!!!! (I probably would have gotten a few of them) That is, as Mike sez..., one party record!!! Apologies on my bitchy for "Witchi Tai To". There was a DJ in R.I. that would play that song waaaay too many times. He also played only one cut by Pharoah all the time as well as playing the shit out of "Compared To What" and "The Revolution Will Not..." thus sealing the deal on all of those for me. Amazing how music shapes our memories for good as well as... I just need to get over it. Looking forward to seeing all the commentary. Your'e a "Hip King"!
  12. You give this a BIG thumbs up??? Do tell more?? I listened to snips and was not moved but a critic/journalist/friend had this on his #1 last year. Love that Marisa Monte and would heartily rec her earlier "Mais" as well as Brown's "Alphabetagammawhammalammadingdong" or whateverit's called. My tip is: unfortunately Thom Jurek reviews it in AMG.
  13. I googled around for a good "organ birthday cake" image and, well, er... Happy Birthday!!!! Jim!
  14. Yes, that is Pepper's version. btw, "Creator" is one of my favorite Pharoah Sanders tracks! Urp! Guess I had a moment of FTS,PBR!, NMCOT, BYTM. uohooourduuulayoooorduulooooyyouurrlourdoooleeeah...peace and happiness for everyman.
  15. It is amazingly apparent that now that we see that head on top that there is nothing artistically going on inside.
  16. Yes that is "Witchi Tai To" but is that Jim Pepper's version??? Never liked that song...right up there with that yodeling on Pharoah's "The Creator Has A Master Plan".
  17. So this answer holds no water now? I was thinking of this and then Tom laid it down.
  18. not to take Mike's tabulating job away but I was curious as to what has been ID-ed thus far for Disc 1... -looks like artist/cut positives on : 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 11, 13, 14, 16 -and just the song titles on : 6(?), 9, 10 -unknown : 4, 7, 12, 15 any corrections? Tracks 4 and 15 are most intriguing...
  19. Intone Big Joe Turner's "Roy!" at the start up of nearly everything: COUW!
  20. Searching out some varying points of view on the Kelly/Chambers to push me over or keep me on the otherside and posting just a few- Alternate Takes - : Harvey Pekar - 'Jazz Times': 'Mostly Bland' - Mosaic website: Charlie B. - local svengali: Organissimo - after firing up a party bowl:
  21. Giddy Yapp~! freeking John!!! listen to those snips on this sight under the "Armstrong Mutations" oh man where the heck did you come up w/ that ??? .... and RDK where did you come up w/ this!!!??? now it looks as if I'll need to go the the land of "Stella, Mussells and Cocoa Butter that's better" to grab this thing!!!! Hit me up doc!!! ... and the singer's a Pole!! here's the AMG link to droole. and the direct web link: FES. ...coincidentally just last nite while reading a bedtime story out of some jazz book (it always bores them to sleep) my daughter asked if "Louis Armstrong was that guy who went to the moon?"
  22. Dhoh!..check out that front tire!! they made that poor pooch follow the horses and elephants!
