    Amy Winehouse

You Americans must have a different version than us Brits! I saw her live just after Frank and she was excellent....as was her band. No American here! The thing is I bought the single "Take the 'B' Ox" which contains a version of 'RM. I did not realize that this tune did not appear on her first album. Have you just added your location to your signature? Could've sworn it was blank before but I did assume you were from the US! Cheers.

  3. Some interesting answers and pretty much what I'd expect from such a cross section; city dwellers want to try the wilds and vice versa! I love where I live now. In fact it's the only place I've ever been comfortable in: small Yorkshire village, National Park location, two hundred or so people, 3 pubs, shop, school and great community spirit --- differentiating it even moreso than it's neighbouring villages and hamlets. I've worked here too for 7 out of the 10 years I've been here and am now a 'respected' member of the community (school governor etc.) so all seems rosy and there ain't nowhere else I'd want to live in this country (apart from Edinburgh -- love that place). But. I long for somewhere outside of England. As does my wife. We worry about the life my son is going to enter when he's a teenager and starts to see the wider picture. There's a lot of development going on in the closest town with a cafe culture/boho thing --- but it's all so superficial. Brittany? We holiday there most years and love it. Always a possibility. A city? York or Edinburgh perhaps. A friend recently had the chance of a two year contract in New York (amazing package with all sorts of perks---- he passed) and I was very envious indeed. Somewhere like Montreal or Seattle looks idyllic in terms of city-meets-environment. Northern Spain/Cantabria is also on the list. First of all though, I need to sort my life out --- give it a rudder and drive it for a while
  4. Yes, on LP, mini-discs and personal iAudio harddrive. Doesn't this belong in the unusual recordings thread? These are supposed to be quite good.... apparently quite soft on the ears and i'm sure they come with a standard 3.5 plug. If you go for IEMs make sure the tips are renown for comfort as some brands' tips can be quite uncomfortable over extended periods. Head over to Head-fi and get some nearly new ones for a snip!
  5. Tord Gustavsen Trio in Leeds last night at the College Of Music. Very stirring stuff. Managing to raise it above the simmer we're used to hearing on their studio discs, they boiled over a few times with some definite Monk-isms and a bit of rocking out on the newer tracks. That drummer gets such a beautiful sound from his kit!
  6. As a chess player I can't imagine how chuffed you must be feeling with yourself today Conn! I run a chess 'club' at my son's school every Monday so I'll be telling the kids how I know someone who's achieved such a feat
  7. Why convert the mp3 files to AAC? Doesn't ipod handle mp3? yeah but the bigger files sound better! Um, no they don't. Not when converted from smaller files. You can not regain that lost information, in fact you are just losing more information. I know I was just being all Black Dog.....
  8. My wife's orchestra played last night. The turn out was lousy but the programme was good. Sibelius --- En Saga Strauss --- Four Last Songs & Dvorak 7th in Dmin. The orchestra were definitely under strength missing some seasoned players but brought it together for some lovely moments in the first two pieces and a rousing Scherzo and Finale in the Dvorak. What would you recommend for a good recording of En Saga?
  9. You think German trains are expensive? Take out a 2nd mortgage or sell a few Mosaics before you use one here.. I can't swim... but there's Easyjet to Luton... but you wouldn't want to go to Luton either....
  10. Why convert the mp3 files to AAC? Doesn't ipod handle mp3? yeah but the bigger files sound better! One more thing I was talking about with a friend yesterday. It's ironic how in this time of downloading and just what an album actually means (especially for the younger generations) is that In Rainbows hangs together as an album moreso than Hail To The Thief, for example, which was acquired by the more conventional method. Maybe that's why Radiohead have made it shorter and more succinct?
  11. I bought this download last night for the princely sum of £3.45. I thought that was a fair price considering I've bought pretty much everything Radiohead have put out and have seen them live twice! I managed to extract the files and convert them into AAC at 320kBps for the iPod and for a burn. I'll make a nice (recyclable ) slipcase and burn it again onto a printable CD-R. It's impressive stuff but still feels like they're scrabbling to get out of the post-Kid A shake up. I'm not sure if I'll go for the big box. I'm very much into aesthetics and it'll certainly look nice on the shelf but given that I only listen to rock music occasionally I'm wondering if it will be unnecessary. Now if someone can tell me the SQ will be better..... that's a different story.
  12. The Atrium String Quartet at Gateshead's Sage. They played a mixed programme of Haydn's No. 7, Nurimov's No.2 In Memory of Indira Ghandi, Shostakovich's No. 7 and Beethoven 'Rasumovsky'. I think most of the crowd went to hear the Beethoven but of all the pieces the Nurimov was the most fascinating; an eastern/Russian dirge which dipped into atonality and frentetic soloing.
  13. All the belated best from sunny Yorkshire MG!
  14. Are those minutes? First x is the lp. Second x is the cd with bonus tracks. with studio chatter
  15. x >=39:21 or x <=53:12
  16. yeah, I stuck my order in about 5 minutes before that post!
  17. So is this worth getting then?
  18. Anyhow, those Yurp-eans shouldn't be giggling at our sporting antics. Three words: Finch sport. Belgium
  19. Very good! An amalgam of Crown Green Bowls, cricket and other 'sports' that we champion in this country. Makes me wonder how so many listen to cricket commentary on the wireless. I mean radio.
  20. On BBC Radio 3 this afternoon Julian Joseph interviewed HH about the album. Sounds like it was some A&R guy's baby ( I know many discs are) and Herbie was given pointers as to what they wanted. That's how it sounded to me anyhow. They played some selections from the album and I gotta admit the guitar spoiled it -- a bit too Metheny-ish for me. Yes, Tina Turner did sound good. Like a good singer. Not feeling the need to strangle every single phrase. Shame she couldn't have done a bit more of this sort of thing. Edit: you can listen again from this page
  21. I'll certainly toast him this Sunday evening although it won't be 9pm EST; that's 2am here! I think Michael would understand!
  22. very possibly true. It's funny because I rarely tell people my fastest 'recorded' time going downhill because I don't think they believe you, but it's very possible to do these speeds; I hit 61mph in Time Trial (against the clock) with one disc, one tri spoke, tri bars and cap turned back to front back in 1991. The descent was long, sinewy and smooth with a very light following breeze. You don't' think about punctures! I lost that event by 2 seconds but the course record went on my ride Coming down an Austrian mountain the year after I'm pretty sure I went faster trying to catch the leading riders. I don't drive fast really. Even when I had the TVR. In the days when even your average Euro-barge can cruise at 100mph and most big German execs are limited, there's little fun in having a big CLK up your arse with blacked out windows. Getting there is the best bit. Between 60 and 130 was a hoot. My favourite was to find a long Yorkshire climb and pick off 3 or 4 cars in a stretch.. In the UK there's a theory that 'Speed Kills'. Personally I think it's ignorance, intolerance and stupidity. In this neck of the woods nearly everyone drives a silver 5 series BMW or a fast Audi. When I see them hoofing along on cold, damp or icy mornings, usually in a rush to get Junior to nursery, relying upon all the driver aids technology has to offer I despair. Especially when I'm ahead of them on my bike.
  23. That's dedication, your going back to the club after escorting your wife "home" on your honeymoon. Who in the name of hell was playing!!!!???? MG Well I'm not Superman! Honeymoon or no, twice a day's enough and no matter how drunk she is there ain't no doing that thing she just won't do.... Anyhow, I'm glad you had a good time tjluke!
  24. Hi GA. I have Neighbourhood and like it a lot. Don't love it. I may get this new one because any album which features Wasilewski and Kurkiewicsz will have some beautiful moments and also replacing Garbarek might be a major strength as his playing has become somewhat 'mannered' over the years. He does write nice tunes too! Thanks for the heads-up.
  25. Well I voted for Stan & Zoot since they're the names I considered for our son and wasn't 'allowed' to use...
