Did you know Dexter Gordon was in the AWAKENINGS ?
tonym replied to Dmitry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
That was a sad, sad film (I knew a couple of sufferers). When I left the cinema my wife was crying. 20 minutes later when I had pulled over to order a pizza, I got back into the car and she was still crying. Can't remember Dex though. tonym -
If you were doing a album, who do you want playing
tonym replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Since most of the Aebersold rhythm sections get the better of me when I practice then this is really redundant but, in some sort of Fantasy Island situation I would go for either Bill Evans or John Taylor on piano, Marc Johnson or Palle Danielsson on bass and on drums, Jon Christenson or Joey Baron. Any permutation of these would be my ideal section. If I had a guitarist present then Colin Oxley would be great. Then they could get together and fire the tenor sax player.... -
Don't get me wrong John. I respect anyone's decision to like something or not. It is for that reason that I didn't try to 'convert' you. Hell, there are lots of folk who admire Joni Mitchell or Stan Getz; two artists who I loathe/love respectively. cheers, tonym.

Eek!! That's what I have always loved about Miles. The fact he doesn't need a shedload of notes, but plays the ones of choice SOooo well. You're a brave man John cheers, tonym

She's all over the place in the UK. Did anyone else think that video was a KFC commercial at first?
-
Thanks Bev. I was looking out for that Miles live CD when it came out. Didn't see it for the usual reasons (Borders too intent on stocking 20+ copies of Lee Ritenour's Greatest Hits etc.). Didn't buy online for the usual reasons (credit card woes!). BTW I noticed Stanko's new album in HMV for £14.99 but if you are attending one of the gigs (I can't remember if you posted whether you are) you may see it cheaper there. cheers, tonym

Just looking at the new ECM website and it is profiling a new release by said trumpeter with his working quintet. New Enrico Rava Date is possibly March 11th. cheers, tonym.

EST -- never fail to really draw me in. Improvisation: Great. Tunes: Great Hooks: Great Seem like nice enough blokes. Don't have that tired Jamie Oliver image (you maybe have to be a Brit, for that). On a fairly small label which does invest heavily in some quite daring stuff. They seem to have everything going for them, but yes, where do they now head to?
-
Where do you start??? Well, they have things like 'The Essential' or 'Ultimate..'; very little thought has been put into compiling such a list IMO. You're best off just reading stuff on sites like this where some folk really know their onions. cheers, tonym

But Gary, I thought you had a daily dose of Trane in any way, shape or form! I absolutely adore 'Lush Life'; this version especially. Agree about the album length -- but then again maybe that has something to do with it's charm. Short and very sweet.

Wayne Shorter Marc Johnson Peter Erskine for now.

Well Catesta, I'm just going to check out those links now (haven't been able to earlier, my dial up is atrocious). Corvettes are quite thin on the ground around here (NE england). If you journey into the midlands there are more, and, more American car collectors in general. For some reason South Yorkshire seems to be a hot bed of Americana -- and the above car was indeed on a Sheffield company's website. Unfortunately the only ones I've seen nearby are total nails; paintwork crazed to hell, especially around stress points, engines that sound like a bag of spanners and worn interiors. I'm sure if a good one appears then the price will be hiked up. But, you only get what you pay for, don't you... One issue surrounding the engine size --don't the small block ones seem a bit gutless compared to the 5.7? This is one reason that I've been put off the 2.9 in the TVR, although that is a different configuration too (V6 as opposed to the 4.0 V8). Again, thanks for the links, I'll spend some time looking at those. Cheers.
-
Thanks for all the advice guys. Funnily enough " those crazy British cars" also appeal. In particular TVRs; more fibreglass, more chassis rot etc., but great motors and very individual. I am aware of the build type of the Corvette but wasn't sure if the chassis extremities; ie. the trailing arms and outriggers bore any similar TVR probs. So, more reading, more measuring (our garage is just big enough and the turning circle is very tight to the shared driveway. I'll take the plunge soon. cheers for now, keep it coming. Tonym

Nice on Muesli, lousy on Corn Flakes.

Well Moose, my listening and buying habits have changed over the last few months; I'm playing/practicing more and time is precious, BUT, this is a real one off. Imagine a bit of Stanley Clarke tumbling out of the speakers in one of these beauts.

or have owned a Corvette C3 from the early 80's? I'm just curious what you have to say about them. Reliable?/ 'Cheap' to run?/ Rot or rust? Any comments would be great. cheers, tonym

Love all of these albums but, like Jonny King says in his book, 'Relaxin' is one of those 'old slippers' albums that you put on and well, relax to. I think it's because of the mix for me; a few ballads and nice medium up swing stuff. Oleo with it's trumpet and bass section and If I Were A Bell which is near perfect IMO. I bought Cookin' the same weekend as I caught food poisoning and each time I look at the cover it brings back memories . All good stuff.

You're probably amassing a nice collection too Gary! cheers.

The Daily Telegraph in the UK, a fairly right-wing, conservative and polite publication today had this feature: Telegraph interview with Norah Jones It is, like most Telegraph Arts features, fairly genteel and spells things out for Middle England. And I'm not sure if anyone's aware of this but it does confirm that she is, after all, Ravi Shankar's daughter.... Furthermore, it even mentions her boyfriend. Do you think Aric got himself a job on Fleet Street? By the way, I DO NOT buy the DT. Just happened to scan the header bar on my way to the Playboy and motors mags.

Hello Young Smith. The G7+9 would have G, Ab, Bb,B, C#, D#, F, G and is a common chord in minor blues (used as the V in a Cmin blues). There is quite a bit of tension in it but it resolves many ways --as you probably know. Would that be the one? tonym

Hi Cho. Wow, that ECM 'sound' again.....How does that translate to a live setting? I've always thought that any idiosynracies that the recording engineer may harbour would be lost as soon as the band are exposed on stage. As with all compilations I'm wary to invest, unless that is the recordings by a particular artist are VERY hard to find. I would much rather get the seperate albums. Especially in the case of ECM where they are all availabe and reasonably priced (at least in Europe). One thing for sure though; buy any disc in the Rarum series and you're bound to be impressed by the talent and diversity of the sidemen. Cheers, tonym.

Zoot's got to take it.

The album is Stan Getz Plays on Verve, the one with the juvenile on the cover. cheers, tonym

Great Brownie, I'll have that one in mind as I think we (my wife and I)may be visiting again soon -- we were last there in 2002. I was very taken with the left bank; apart from all the history, the buildings and streets are all very romantic. On our last visit we didn't get chance to hear any jazz, although we dropped into a chansons bar/restaurant called La Limonaire. Fantastic. I did though call into that vinyl shop on the road down to Notredame --- I bet you were one of the guys in there that day!!!
