OK. The exact dates for these sessions are unknown, but Vladimir Simosko's authoritative "Artie Shaw, a Musical Biography and Discography" lists them as "c. 1968".

There is a recent 5-CD set on Jasmine ("Six Star Treats", JASBOX 20-5) which claims to have the "Complete Commercially Released Recordings" of the Gramercy 5 (1940-1954). As a long standing Artie Shaw fan, I also have the Musicmasters sets, but I haven't had time to cross-check all these issues. The Jasmine box seems fairly complete, and certainly much easier to find than the Musicmasters issues dating back from the early 90's. Edit: The sessions referred to above are the last on which he PLAYED. However, Shaw conducted a large orchestra with strings on November 21, 1955, in order to complete the album "Did Someone Say a Party?" on Decca, but these tracks do not have any clarinet solos. The FINAL session in which he had strictly a conducting role was "Artie Shaw Recreates His Great '38-'39 Band" on Capitol ST 2992 in 1963. Walt Levinsky (expertly) played the clarinet solos on these sessions.

Bit off-topic, but here's the next batch: 1455 HARRY JAMES 1946-47 1456 OSCAR PETERSON (R.I.P....) 1952-53 1457 ELLA FITZGERALD 1954-55 1458 BEN WEBSTER 1953-54 1459 JOE BUSHKIN 1947-50 No release date unfortunately, but should be late winter / early spring.

New issues are not being handled by Abeille Musique-they are only reissuing part of the back catalog. Nocturne.fr has released the latest batch and are planning to issue the next one on June 18. Here's a link to the next Benny Goodman CD :Benny Goodman 1949-51

Sorry, after two weeks there was no reaction to the post, so I simply deleted it, so as not to overload the board with useless chatter.

The following new issues from Chronological Classics appear on the FNAC website with a release date of April 23: 1430 THELONIOUS MONK 1951-52 1431 SIDNEY BECHET 1952 (VOL.2) 1432 DUKE ELLINGTON 1953 1433 GENE KRUPA 1953-54 1434 JOE BUSHKIN 1940-46 Not an exceedingly interesting batch (I wish they could have dispensed with the Monk album, I suppose most collectors already have those classic Blue Note and Prestige sessions), but it's good to see this series reappear at last, after a year-long hiatus.

Looking for Francy Boland LP Flirt And Dream Saba 15136
FrancoisD replied to FrancoisD's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Wow, I didn't realise it was that hard to find. I have the SABA, it's a great 'MOR, late night listening' album, very laid back. Sorry I can't currently point you in the direction of a vinyl but if I see one I'll ping you a mail. One thing that amuses me about this LP is there are two sets of notes on the back. The set on the left is in German and looks quite scholarly and very matter-of-fact with session details etc, Boland's life story etc. The set on the right in English doesn't seem to correlate at all with the German translation - somewhat 'Un-PC' views about canoodling with the ladies and late night smooching etc. Must have been written by Austin Powers ! Thanks sidewinder. Just sent you a PM. -
This must be one of the hardest to find Boland albums. My internet search has yielded practically nothing. Anyone in possession of a VG+/M copy of that item and willing to part with it? I offer up to $100 for it. Paypal payment only. Thanks in advance. Following are the varoius editions of this LP: Saba SB 15136 MPS 15136 MPS-BASF CRM 642 MPS-BASF 21 20642-3 CRYSTAL 45795

What's the current status of the Classics labels?
FrancoisD replied to Don Brown's topic in New Releases
I heard from a reliable source that their European distributor recently went belly up owing the label a large amount of money. Whether they can survive this setback remains to be seen. I think I've already posted it elsewhere-their new distributor is Abeille Musique France. They are at the present busy reissuing the back catalog, but no new issues have appeared after #1429( Lionel Hampton 1951-53). However you will be able to find a large slice of the back catalog here: Chronological Classics -

new artie shaw - super cheap Import Box
FrancoisD replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I haven't checked in detail, but at least two titles are unaccountably missing from this compilation : 062769-1 Why Shouldn't I? from March 20, 1941 (CD 8), and 067747-1 Is It Taboo? from Sept. 3, 1941 (CD 9). Also, the set includes only a small part of the 1945 sessions: 15 dates are missing from that year alone. -

On the contrary, the discs on the 3-CD set The Complete Louis Armstrong With Fletcher Henderson (Forte 38001/2/3) are quite long ones, since every known take of every track on which Louis played (either in the section or as a soloist) is included. Details of the 66 tracks in this set are as follows: Disc 1: Manda Go 'Long Mule Tell Me, Dreamy Eyes, My Rose Marie Don't Forget You'll Regret Day By Day Shanghai Shuffle (Pathé) Words (13925) Words (13926) Copenhagen (13928) Copenhagen (13929) Shanghai Shuffle (Vocalion) Naughty Man (Vocalion) (13952) Naughty Man (13953) One Of These Days My Dream Man -1 My Dream Man-2 The Meanest Kind Of Blues (Columbia) Naughty Man (Columbia) How Come You Do Me Like You Do?-1 How Come You Do Me Like You Do?-2 How Come You Do Me Like You Do?-3 Disc 2 Araby Everybody Loves My Baby-1 Everybody Loves My Baby-3 Naughty Man (Oriole) Prince Of Wails-1 Prince Of Wails-2 Prince Of Wails-3 Mandy Make Up Your Mind-1 Mandy Make Up Your Mind-2 I'll See You In My Dreams-1 Why Couldn't It Be Poor Little Me?-2 I'll See You In My Dreams-5 I'll See You In My Dreams-6 Why Couldn't It Be Poor Little Me?-4 Why Couldn't It Be Poor Little Me?-5 Why Couldn't It Be Poor Little Me?-6 Bye And Bye Play Me Slow-2 Play Me Slow-3 Alabamy Bound-2 Alabamy Bound-3 Alabamy Bound-4 Disc 3 Swanee Butterfly-1 Swanee Butterfly-2 Swanee Butterfly-3 Poplar Street Blues 12th Street Blues Me Neenyah Memphis Bound When You Do What You Do I'll Take Her Back If She Wants To Come Back Money Blues-1 Money Blues-2 Sugar Foot Stomp What-Cha-Call-Em Blues I Miss My Swiss (The Southern Serenaders) Alone At Last (The Southern Serenaders) You Dirty Mistreater (Coot Grant and Kid Wilson) Come On Coot, Do That Thing (Coot Grant and Kid Wilson) Have Your Chill, I'll Be Here When Your Fever Rises (Coot Grant and Kid Wilson) Find Me At The Greasy Spoon-1 (Coot Grant and Kid Wilson) Find Me At The Greasy Spoon-2 (Coot Grant and Kid Wilson) TNT Carolina Stomp Recorded from October 7, 1924 to October 10, 1925. The best-sounding Henderson is to be found on the following CDs (representing only a fraction of his output unfortunately): -Yeah Man! Hep CD1016 (1931-33 Brunswick/Columbia) -Wild Party! Hep CD1009 or Tidal Wave GRP 16432 (both cover the 1934 Deccas) -The Indispensable Fletcher Henderson RCA Jazz Tribune 73421226182 (most Victor recordings from the 1927-36 period) -Louis with Fletcher Henderson (1924-25) 3-CD set Forte F-38001/2/3 -The Harmony and Vocalion Sessions vol. 1 (1925-26) Timeless 1064 -The Harmony and Vocalion Sessions vol. 2 (1927-28) Timeless 1069

There are some vocals, but most are handled by jazz-sounding singers : Hines himself on "Everybody Loves My Baby"(2/13/29) and "Have You Ever Felt That Way?" (2/14/29), Walter Fuller, a trumpeter-singer much influenced by Louis Armstrong, on "Oh You Sweet Thing", "I Love You Because I Love You" (7/14/32), "Rosetta" (2/13/32), plus Valaida Snow's only pre-war American recording : "Maybe I'm To Blame". Except for two quite indifferent vocals by William Franklin on "Sweet Ella May" and "Good Little, Bad Little You", the rest of the performances on these two albums are purely instrumental.

There are two additional CDs in this "series": Dragonfly (1983) (Soulnote SN 1058-2), and Liquid Dancers (1991) (Soul Note 121158-2). Both are equally enjoyable, and feature the same quartet of Giuffre (ts, ss, fl, cl, bass-fl), Pete Levin (keyboards, Bob Nieske (el-b) and Randy Kaye (d). The music is constantly intriguing, if not really the kind one would habitually expect from Giuffre.

Ted Kendall also did a fantastic job on the 1944-45 Artie Shaw Victor series--issued in full on the Hep 3-Cd set Artie Shaw and His Orchestra Hep CD 70. As for the remastering by J.R.T. on the Frog issue of Earl Hines, it will astound those who own the (few) previous editions. The restoration of the Victors from 1929 is nothing short of miraculous. The 1932-33 Brunswicks were less well recorded in the first place, but the result is astonishing there too. I regard the two Hines albums (Frog DGF 55 and Hep CD 1003) as truly indispensable.

The Quintones also recorded two sides with Charlie Barnet : "I'll Never Let a Day Pass By" (Bluebird B-11202) and "Wasn't It You?" (Bluebird B-11223) available on LP only in Volume 6 of "The Complete Charlie Barnet" (RCA AXM2 5590). A photo reproduced on the liner of this album shows they were four men and a girl.

It was released on May 15 in France. A quick look at Jazzmatazz shows that it is not yet scheduled for release in the States. The Classics releases listed on Jazzmatazz for August have been out in France since April. The Shaw album includes the following material : The remainder of the Musicraft sessions from June 19, 1946 to November 11, 1946 (the first Musicraft dates are on Classics 1330). The 6-sided set of "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" from July 28 is not included. It is available on Crystal Stream IDCD 45/46. The jazz-slanted Columbia items from "Modern Music For Clarinet" (the classical pieces from that album have been omitted) : "The Man I Love"/"I Concentrate On You" - "Mood In Question"/"Rendezvous For Clarinet And Strings" The first two Decca sessions, December 30, 1949 ("Orinoco"/"Mucho De Nada") and January 3, 1950 ("Love Is The Sweetest Thing"/"I Get A Kick Out Of You").
