  1. I have uploaded part 4 of my 1975 Sam Wooding interview.
  2. Blobby and his Windows machine has completed Jim's mission and destroyed this thread.
  3. Allen, you're upsetting Jim! Oh well, gives him another opportunity to post for post-counter's sake.
  4. One important thing Apple has done right is to make superior products.
  5. That's a no-brainer, so obvious that most people don't see a reason to bring it up. Jim is obsessively anti-Apple, and thus a part of a rapidly fading breed. Read his post below, where he blathers on about "arrogant Macheads," "i-Snobs," "Mac-istas," etc. . It was always silly, but it has become increasingly so in recent years—years that seem to have passed Jim by. They gloated when Apple was brought to the edge of extinction by Sculley, a former Pepsi Cola exec, and other dabblers. Steve Jobs came back and made it the giant it is today. People like Jim hate that, but they had better get used to it. I saw some news footage of Bill GAtes the other night, he was visiting one of the many schools that have benefited from his philanthropic work—it was full of laptops with a white apple on each lid! Apropos Gates, he deserves a lot of high praise for all the good he and his wife are doing with their money. Steve Jobs was a remarkable visionary whose ideas and ability to implement them changed much in the world, but he was the industry scrooge. I admire both, but—all things considered–I think Gates has the edge.
  6. I don't think anyone here has said NEVER, in the general sense. I said that I had never experienced it in 27 years...I Jim, being the innate contrarian, says "I think it's pretty naive to equate never being attacked with being impossible to be attacked." That's just typical of him. Unless it's in the original post (I don't ever as much as peek at Conrad's nonsense), I don't think anyone in this thread has exhibited naïvité. Macs do get attacked, but not as often as Windows systems, and the Apple people are quick to post OS upgrades.
  7. In my 27 years of using Macs every day, I have never experienced any kind of virus.
  8. Listen to sonnymax, Pete C. — he is right.
  9. I know this will sound odd, but, to me, Bix and Bessie were the most disappointing no-shows. It happened many years ago.
  10. I'm glad that you liked the interview. The Down Beat employee's "contributions" were akin to coughs and sneezes during a Segovia performance. I have no idea what became of her, neither does Dan Morgenstern, but we hope she's alive and well.
  11. Glad you got your body fluid shorthand together. What do you think of Archie Shepp's music? Were you grooving along to Attica Blues in 1972? No, buta couple of years earlier....
  12. She P or She PP? I grew up thinking the two were basically the same! As a child, I used to PP—as an adult, I started to P. Does having Archie PP on the cover and P on the label bother you?
  13. A great commercial. Wasn't DOW the Napalm maker?
  14. I have posted Part III of my 1975 Smithsonian interview with Sam Wooding. This segment takes us from the Club Alabam in NYC to the Admiralpalast in Berlin—1925.
  15. We know that it adds to your total, but a blank post—are we not going too far in our Guinness game?
  16. Here's aninteresting duo!
  17. I believe Carl Jefferson also had an unusual artist-favoring arrangement for Concord. Years ago, when Roberta Flack signed with Atlantic, her agent (Franklin) discovered an outdated "breakage" clause in the contract. It was a leftover 78rpm clause that had conveniently remained in place. FRanklin had it removed.
  18. The session cost had to be absorbed before any performance royalties were paid, and then only if there was such an agreement, which there usually wasn't with so-called "side-men". I recall hearing stories of Norman Granz (you know, the saint). Manipulating so that one artist in fact paid another's advance—unknowingly, unwittingly. Billie comes to mind as one of the victims cited, Peterson as one of the benefactors. It all had to do with "studio/session costs". Heard anything like that, Chuck N.?
  19. Great find Bichos. Never mind how well she sounded, the Bee got it! Guess that answers the question better than anyone expected..
  20. Are you there, too?
  21. I don't recall posting the above, but I have to wonder why I am now—six years later—writing notes for the complete King Jazz boxed set (5 CDs) Have I entered the twilight zone?
  22. I knew and worked with Esmond at Prestige. He was a super guy—I look forward to reading the results of your search. Esmond took many pictures—I think photography was something he really was into, and he certainly had opportunities to get some great shots.
  23. You can now retain your old number.
  24. Good to hear that you made it back home in one piece, Allen. I have had two MagicJacks and no problems with either of them. I bought the second one (a MagicJack Plus), because it does not require the computer. It plugs into the AC, with a cable going to the router. The only inconvenience I experienced with the old obe was that the computer had to be turned on. It still received incoming calls and took messages that appeared in my e-mail, but the plus is more independent. Anyway, I highly recommend this little dongle—it is every bit as clear as my old system (Vonage) and those that came before that. The price is unbeatable and if you travel, you can take old Jack with you and enjoy free calls from anywhere. You can even call home free from anywhere if you have a second Jack with you.
  25. I don't think I can add anything to what has already been said here, Jeff, except that I strongly feel you have done the right thing. Being on the latter side of 80 myself, I could well be heading for the situation your father finds himself in. His age-related misfortune is greatly offset by having a son like you. Don't for a minute doubt that you have made a move that is beneficial to your dad.
