What an amazing thread, thanks for posting this - I had no idea there was so much Elvis-hatred (or is it Elvis envy)! Speaking only for myself, I can dig Elvis, Sinatra and even Elton at the right time and place. It has never interfered with my other musical likes-I would even go so far as to say it enhances them! One more thing-I have even been to Graceland (twice) and would recommend it!

Ellington 1930s big-band Mosaic
desertblues replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Well, the box seems to be unchanged. My set arrived undamaged, but there was a torn seam on the box (this has happened before). They do use plenty of bubble wrap but really could use a sturdier mailer. UPS is pretty rough with packages. -

Set #37 has arrived. Enjoying disc 1 (sound is very good as expected). -

Living with Jazz

What he said - well worth reading (even rereading). -

Max Roach, Miles Davis Mosaics running low
desertblues replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I've been listening to set #2864 for a few days now, I agree with most of the previous comments. There is a lot of variety in the groups and the players are mostly outstanding - there is some great Dorham here and Tommy Turrentine is excellent too (as are all the tenors). Great drumming by Max of course. I'm very pleased with this one! -
Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

It's disc 5 of my newly-aquired Max Roach set - I've only heard about half of the set so far. Lots of great music I wasn't familiar with (like the beautiful take on "Parker's Mood" on disc 3). -

Max Roach, Miles Davis Mosaics running low
desertblues replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Ordered the Max Roach set this am - there are "about" 100 sets remaining... -
I have the same ones. Not bad! I got a pair of these recently ($69.00 at Sam's Club) and I must say I am pleased with them also. They provide an amazing amount of bass with no sub.

Miles Davis Prestige recordings LP set
desertblues replied to ASNL77's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Just to chime in - I am pleased with the sound quality of this set also - did not know it was pressed by Columbia. I have also seen this set in a "pressed in Germany" version and it was identical to mine. -
HOLY CRAP....

Still awaiting mine.. And I'm still waiting. MG This one's really worth the wait - I'm listening to disc 8, the session with Don Patterson and Paul Weeden followed by the latin date with Thad Jones. Nice change of pace from the quartets! -
I think all of the above apart from 'Congo Lament' have previously been out as Conns. They all need to be available again though. The Harold Vick in particular. Not sure 'Congo Lament' has ever been on CD (I have an LP of it with the weird monkey-in-earmuffs jungle scene ). Good music though ! Actually Congo Lament is partially issued on the excellent Bennie Green Mosaic Select (five tracks with Ike & Turrentine on tenor, with Green, Sonny Clark, Milt Hinton & Art Blakey). Cuscuna states in the liners that these sides and three quartet tracks were issued in 1985 as "Easy Living" on BST 84103. I would love to hear those quartet tracks also, described by MC as "among his (Quebec's) finest moments on tape".

I've been playing the Sonny Stitt which arrived today as my back-ordered purchase from the sale. So far it's been disc one and parts of three and five - great stuff as expected! -
Elvin Jones and Gerry Mulligan CJB in "Running Low"!
desertblues replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Mulligan is definitely one of Mosaic's best, an essential purchase IMHO. To sell out 7500 copies in less than 3 years must be a record for Mosaic (released in 2003). Get it now! -

Broke down and ordered the Stitt on the last day, will have it in 1-2 weeks according to Mosaic. Next box for me will be the upcoming Ellington small groups. -
