Lou Donaldson - The Scorpion: Live at the Cadillac
Jim Alfredson replied to Dmitry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Well, Ron Blake wasn't cheap (which was partly my fault), but he was definately worth it and I'm glad he participated on the record. I would think doing one or two songs with Braith wouldn't cost too much. Besides, I have no problem paying people what they are worth if I can afford it, especially great musicians. I'd love to cover some of his tunes like Braith-a-way. Damn, too many choices! I have a lot of ideas for records in my head. I definately want to do an organ trio + vibes record very soon, but I have to find the right vibes player. Of course organ trio + vibes + Braith would be sweet as well! And hey, the boys in Organissimo aren't too shabby, or so I've heard.... -
Dr. Lonnie Smith - Boogaloo to Beck
Jim Alfredson replied to Man with the Golden Arm's topic in New Releases
Well, they recorded the entire concert I saw so maybe we'll see something on Schoolkids Records. His version of "Caravan" that night was very cool! -

Dude, could I get Braith on my next record? That would be the SHIT! -

The live disc on the QE2 is Lou with Dr. Lonnie Smith, not Leon Spencer. I don't believe Spencer has recorded anything in quite some time. I talked to Pete Fallico once and he mentioned that Spencer wants to record but he can't get anything going. It's a shame. Maybe Soulstream and I should start a nutty organ record label and record these old masters! -
Dr. Lonnie Smith - Boogaloo to Beck

I'm willing to bet that Lonnie does some nice things with the material. One of his original tunes which I don't think he's recorded anywhere as yet, but that I've heard him play twice now in concert consists of basically four chords. And it's very very slow. And yet his soloing and use of dynamics keeps it interesting for the entire length of the tune (which when I saw him last was close to 10 minutes if not longer). I understand your concern Soulstream, but I honestly think if anyone can handle a task such as this it would be the Dr. -

I agree. I put off buying this one for a long time due to the AMG review. When I got it for $2.00 at a CD store that was going out of business, it actually served as the catalyst for me to put absolutely no weight in AMG's reviews whatsoever. I use that site strictly for personel questions and such now and not for reviews. It's a smokin' session. Leon Spencer is one bad dude. Why is he not recording anymore? -
Thank you, Mr. Jazz. Small budget, yes! Under $5k. I'm glad you enjoy it. I appreciate the comment about not playing over the top. No penny rolls on the top C key here.

The Turbanator truly is taking the term "nutty organ" (as Bill Heid likes to say) to new and uncharted places. I'll definately be picking this up. I like his two tributes to Hendrix and I bet he does some really interesting stuff with this music. Can't wait! What label is it on? -
Sure... sounds like fun.

Can anyone direct me to the Publishing Co.'s
Jim Alfredson replied to Johnny E's topic in Miscellaneous Music
That's the worse thing I've ever read. -
No, I haven't heard that McCoy record. James Thomas on organ?!? Who's that?

Pistons Eastern Champs
Jim Alfredson replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Wow... this series has been entertaining to say the least. The Pistons get down 3-1 and then win the next two games to tie it up and force game seven tomorrow (well, today technically). This is why I love basketball! GO PISTONS AND BIG BEN (who had 20 points, 17 rebounds, and 5 blocks Friday night!) -
Elvis Costello to wed Diana Krall

I give this one about as long as the Julia Roberts/Lyle Lovett relationship. -
I had to vote for "Street of Dreams" because I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I first heard it. There used to be a Tower Records across from Michigan State Univeristy and I remember going in there late one winter evening after a choir rehearsal and purchasing Street of Dreams. I drove home, hopped in a nice warm bath and put that thing on. And that's where I stayed for the next 40+ minutes is in that tub just listening to the wonderful vibe on that record (no pun intended Mr. Hutcherson)! I have to say, usually my mind starts to wander when I'm listening to music and doing other things but I was transfixed by that record. Especially Larry's playing (of course!) but then after repeated listenings I started to adore everyone's contribution on that record. I'll say this too: There are WAY too few organ records with vibes. This is something I plan to remedy.

Scott E Dog Peterson is a great player. It'll be worth it.

Bill's got a real quirky voice... it's great to hear him sing. I hope he uses a real B3. Sometimes when he does "organ" gigs he uses some piss poor keyboard that sounds like a turd. I don't know how or why he does it but he still sounds good even on the crappy clone. I'll be B3-ing tonight myself at the ol' Green Door in Lansing. Woo hoo!

If you do it as an "AOTW" then make sure to give notice at least two weeks in advance... that way people will have time to order it and for CDStreet to ship it.

Guy is involved. Right now our goal is to find a suitable venue that will either give us the nights for free or charge very little. It will definately be on a weekend. We'll keep everyone abreast of what's going on.

Hi friends, Fellow Detroit organist Duncan McMillan and I are currently planning a benefit for Larry Young to provide his grave with a headstone and perhaps even raise a little money for his widow. We'll be traveling to New York City soon to scope out possible venues and we've decided to feature several different organists for the event. We're looking to get Dr. Lonnie Smith, Bill Heid, Sam Yahel and Organissimo. For the other cats, we'd like to get some top notch sidemen that have a history with Larry Young. Can you all help listing some musicians that Larry played with that are still with us? So far we've got... Elvin Jones John McLaughlin

Happy Birthday, JoeG!
Jim Alfredson replied to AfricaBrass's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Sorry I didn't call you to jam, bro. I got a last minute call from Diego to play at Harper's last night. 100 dolla no holla. -
Have you seen him before? If not, I would say definately go. If you have, I would say let the finances dictate. He's definately worth seeing just for the multitudes of nutty swids.

Is the Blue Note Board Officially Dead?
Jim Alfredson replied to BeBop's topic in Miscellaneous Music
And then you said to Cuscuna, "Yeah, we're all congregating at three different boards right now. The All About Jazz forums, the Jazz Corner Speakeasy, and the Organissimo boards.... oh, have you heard Organissimo? Those cats are bad!" -
