What about an English Vogue label box-set?
-
I hate to brag and boast, but I have a few of those original 10" Vogue's!

Why do I feel funny when I throw out an OBI strip?

But it always tells guests that you are serious connoisseur of the Japanese art of quality remastering. It gives the right impression, at least to those who dig these kind of things. -
Yo I actually like those feisty opinionated blogs, even if I don't agree with them, as it gives you something to rally against.

Where are you buying your music today?
ArtSalt replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I still dig the presence and artifacts of having a physical collection. It seems to me, to have more intrinsic value, presence and meaning, than a mere download. And that's why I've never down loaded any music ever and I doubt I ever will. -

That must be the best jazz CD store in The Netherlands. They used to have all those David Murray DIWs in stock when I first started collecting jazz. I no longer live nearby, so I haven't been there in years. Their prices were always very high. The current owner is (former?) board member "bluerein", who hasn't posted here since May 2012. It depends, some of the box sets can be pricey, but then again some of them are reasonable and are in line with Jazzmessengers. What you would pretty much expect. They currently have 3 Japanese import CDs for 30 Euros, now that's not a bad deal at all! -

Not in any particular order: The Jazz Center in the Hague CD Japan Mosaic Utrecht International Record fair Jazzmessengers And various known and proven ebay sellers for out-of-print Mosaic box sets and Japanese Imports (Australia, UK, Netherlands, France, Germany and Japan). Unlike many, my experience with ebay has been extremely positive. -
Un-American Jazz ! Bop to post-bop (and everything in between)

I've a Jimmy Deucher album that was issued on Pacific Jazz, the cover blurb is all about extra strong India Pale Ale. The Jazzhus label has certainly educated me on European jazz, but they seem to have dried up with their re-releases at present(?). -
^Indeed, very good and also the inbedded link to Mr Marks piece has sold it all to me.

I purchased some Chet Baker Steeplechase vinyl from Jazzmessengers last year, and they were quick and fast delivered and now they send me their catalogue every month. But for current Mosaic sets, I always purchase direct from Mosaic and run the gauntlet of custom charges, generally unsuccessfully. There's also the jazz center here in the Hague, but they're expensive for Mosaic sets IMO, better for Japanese imports.

It seems like only yesterday, Sony were telling us that "At last, Miles Ahead released as Miles and Evans intended it to be heard, in stereo on CD for the first time!" and truly "360 degree sound!" I'm not 100% convinced that I need these CD reeditions in mono.

If you could only have one Mosaic box...
ArtSalt replied to bogdan101's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
They're great as done by Mosaic but didn't have quite the same impact on me as they did when I encountered most of that material in those two old Columbia LP boxes. I actually prefer the Ellington small group sessions 1936-40, over the big band 1932-40 set. -
Ebay remains a source of the good stuff, from known and proven sellers, but you do sometimes get crazy mixed up and inflated prices. And there's even risk here, I used a Greek seller who had an abundance of Mosaic box sets last year, and on the basis of past performance I purchased three sets on my first order. All arrived okay. Checked out the same seller a couple of weeks ago and had been removed with a terrible score for non-delivery of the goods.

This is the same set that was released in the mid-90s, I have to say the sound was pretty disappointing to me, not a patch on the David Bowie at the Beeb which was great. There's also a new box-set of Big Country at the BBC which could be interesting.

Love that box set too, especially the Buck Clayton and Harry Carney's Jamaica Rumble and Shifting Sands. -
Primarily, it was the ammunition of walkmans, of which I had an Aiwa version, whose sound was absolutely first rate. I feel a nostalgia for cassettes, but I went a bit crazy earlier this year with a refurbished Alpine 60 and bought shed loads of NOS and used cassettes. There is a unique and very analogue sound to tape that can sound quite appealing and direct, when you haven't listened to one for nigh on 15-20 years. But it is only a flirt with the past, you will soon pick-up on the limitations of the medium. And there was IMO, a mix cassette culture that hasn't an equivalent in the CD world. Why, I am not sure. But there was always someone willing to spend an evening making you a mix tape that when it was given, always felt a like a gift given warmly. With burning CD's it's all instant and without the time of the mixer listening to the full song. Perhaps.

The MJQ did a version of Yesterday during their 1969 Space sessions a Abbey Road when they were briefly on The Beatles Apple label. Jack Sheldon did a sub-Las Vegas crooner medley that included Honey Pie on his 1969 MOR pop and lounge jazz affair The Cool World of Jack Sheldon. As for jazz rock covers, I quite liked Charlie Hunter's version of Cobain's Come As You Are. There's also a German DJ, known as DJ Coconut who has done latin-jazz covers of The Yellow Magic Orchestra and other groups that may well prove interesting, but I haven't listened to any yet.

It's a shame about using the Decca CDs, as posted above, surely a postponement would have been optimum in the circumstances. I buy the Mosaic box sets, not only for the completeness of the set, but sonic quality that comes from painstackingly mastering from the best sources available. A previously released CD doesn't fall into this category does it? Still, a set I will be purchasing.

Thanks, I've most of the Impulse! CDs, so that would be a good place to start, but what I intend to purchase next is the Clifford Brown and Max Roach Emarcy SHM CDs.

what is 'modern' to you???
ArtSalt replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Mods came out of the London modernists who digged modern jazz, but the mods were later reaching their peak in around 64/65. There was also a class element, the aspirational working class who made in to universities in the first boom of education post-war were very much jazz fans whilst the manual working class were more into the early rock of the period. At least that's how people who were there at the time explain it to me. -
I've done a fair amount of research on various blogs and forums on the Japanese SHM and Blu Spec formats and the verdict seems to be in that its the remastering that really counts, its only 0's and 1's and it cannot practically make a difference, etc, etc...... And yet, in the spirit of adventure, I recently purchased some SHM and Blu Spec CDs from Japan and considering some of them are only 16bit remasters, they play essentially like a good mastered 24bit and there's a definitely more differentiation and stage depth to the sound. I don't own any 16bit CDs that can stand up against 24bit, so in my considered opinion, there is a discernable difference. Anyone else had any positive experience and verdict on these formats?

An old colleague of mine use to sneak into dances for the American Airmen near Burtonwood Air Base in the mid-50s. Use to put on an American accent to get in. He also insisted that Latin jazz was the ultimate underground music at the time. -
Correct, and it can be erased by oiling the spindles. Not as diffcult as it sounds, but you need to be careful. Some of the metal type tapes exchange for princely sums now. I am talking about 60 Euros plus. There's still a vibrant cassette community out there.

Modern to me, and it is my personal preference, corresponds with the boom period of Ivy style and modern jazz: running from around 1955 to 1964, some would push it further to 1967 and earlier back to 1952. I wouldn't argue against that! -
When the heck was that era. I never encountered it. Well, sales for one: cassettes were out selling records. I was somewhat tongue in cheek there, because I didn't know any audiophiles back then! But the humble cassette for a long time was out selling vinyl and there was a lot of rubbish pressings in the 80s, remember how flexible Virgin pressing were?
