  1. I remember he cancelled his gig at the Vanguard at the end of last year.
  2. Lee Morgan recorded Milt Jackson's Off Spring on his first album for Vee Jay, "Here's Lee Morgan" in 1960. I can't find if Bags has ever recorded that tune himself, under that title or another one. Can anyone help on this ? Thanks.
  3. Fresh Sound website lists a new CD by Marcus Strickland. It seems pretty cool with Robert Glasper (p, Fender Rhodes), Brandon Owens (bass) and E.J. Strickland (d, percussion). Special guest: Jeremy Pelt (tp) on 2 tracks.
  4. It's been a long time since I've heard about Duke Jordan. His last album seems to date back to 1995. I was wondering if he's still with us and where does he live.
  5. I would strongly suggest that you listen to David Weiss's "Breathing Room" and also to the two albums by the New Jazz Composers Octet (all on Fresh Sound New Talent). The last NJCO album features some particularly well-written tunes composed and/or arranged by the gifted Xavier Davis.
  6. These two don't come up on a jazzloft.com search with "uptown"
  7. Thanks Chuck ! Do I have all of them with the following list ? Chet Baker Boston, 1954 Kenny Barron New York Attitude Serge Chaloff Boston 1950 Sonny Clark Oakland, 1955 Tommy Flanagan Nights at the Vanguard Carl Fontana The Great Fontana Jimmy Gourley The Left Bank of New York Barry Harris For The Moment Coleman Hawkins Jamestown, NY 1958 Dodo Marmarosa Pittsburgh, 1958 Charles Mingus West Coast, 1945-49 Charlie Parker Montreal 1953 Boston, 1952 Densil Pinnock I Waited For You Freddie Redd Lonely City Charlie Rouse Soul Mates Jack Sheldon Playing For Change Don Sickler Night Watch Lee Wiley Music Of Manhattan 1951
  8. Here is a quote from the liner notes of the "Village Vanguard" album : "Although several nights were recorded, Mulligan decided to select the album's final takes from one Sunday afternoon in order to maintain a consistency of mood." So there must be some unreleased material in the Verve vaults which won't be included in the Mosaic box. Unless those tapes have been lost as so many others...
  9. Roy has now an on-line website : Roy Campbell Music Matthew Shipp told me he will be featured on some upcoming projects in the Thirsty Ear Blue Series. His Delmark release are all interesting but the Pyramid Trio is his best date so far. I would recommend also his playing on alto saxophonist Steve Lehman "Structural Fire" on CIMP. Has anyone been to see him at his monday jam session at the Lenox Lounge ?
  10. Joe Henderson is featured on four tracks of pianist Kevin Hays' very first album, "El Matador", recorded for the now defunct Japanese 'Jazz City' label (later reissued by Evidence). Along with Steve Wilson, Scott Collet and Bill Stewart.
  11. As far as I know, the Metheny-Haden won't be release because it's too expensive in terms of rights & stuff.
  12. Last of the "Montreal Tapes", the duo between Charlie Haden and Joe Henderson should be released by Universal before summer.
  13. Can anyone post a Uptown CD list/catalogue or give an URl for it ? Thanks.
  14. It's not on Atlantic. It's out on Ropeadope (Philadelphia Experiment, Sex Mob, DJ Logic, etc.), distributed by Atlantic in the US, Ryko in Europe. Excellent album with John Ellis on ts. Ropeadope New Charlie Hunter album Charlie Hunter
  15. Thank you JSngry, Soul Stream, Mike and everybody. Glad to find you here. I hope someone gets to see G.T. alive. I am sure he's still a monster drummer. He seems to have make a few sessions as a sideman recently on the Leaning House label Has anyone heard those ? People of Cadence magazine should go down to Texas and have him talk before it's too late. V.
  16. I had always wandered what had happened to drummer G.T. Hogan who was very active in the early 60's, recording with Kenny Dorham, Cal Massey, Randy Weston, Curtis Fuller, Kenny Drew et al. and playing in Paris with Bud Powell. Well, a Google search learned me he is still active in Texas but seem to have been through some rough time according to this : "But the real revelation that night was Ivery's 70-year-old drummer G.T. Hogan, released not too long ago from the Texas Department of Corrections. Hogan, born in Galveston, had been sent up on three convictions of possession of narcotics with the intent to sell. Seems no one really cares that you played with Billie Holiday or hung out with Charlie Parker when you're holding smack and they're throwing you in the slam." http://www.dallasobserver.com/issues/1999-...-25/music4.html Has anyone seen him play recently over there in Texas ? Man, this guy has surely great stories to tell. Here's a picture of the old man :
