Oscar Dennard is the kind of mysterious character you find so often in the jazz history. He was in Lionel Hampton's band for a time, then he came to Europe in a quartet with Idrees Sulieman about '59 and I read somewhere that he died in Cairo, Egypt, no longer after that. Some tapes (sid to be poorly recorded on an out-of-tune piano in Denmark) were released in Japan by Somethin' Else.

I checked this thread for the first time too and here is someone who hasn't been mentionned (maybe because he is also a great tenor player) : BILLY ROOT His recorded output is somewhat slim but if you ever heard Kenton's Tropicana live date and Lee Morgan's Dizzy Atmosphere date, you must admit he is one who counts on the baritone.
-
If you like (our man) Billy Root (on baritone), Lennie Niehaus' (beautiful) arrangements and compositions, Mel Lewis' drumming, Stu Williamson, the underrated Harold Land and all those guys from the West Coast, I strongly recommend it. On the first session, Billly Root seems to take more solos than Jack Sheldon who sounds very fine, close to the Chet Baker of the time. According to the liner notes, two tunes composed and arranged by George Wallington were commissioned for Gerry Mulligan by Gene Norman, but unrecorded by him and were finally recorded by Sheldon and Root on the first date. And it's only $9.98 on GNP Crescendo website. This is the kind of secret gem you are happy to discover.

This is it ! Thank you.

I just bought that CD and the booklet doesn't give any discographical data apart from Leonard Feather's liner notes which don't detail the personnel. Two sessions seem to be gathered on that album : 07/20/1957 ; 03/06/1959. Can anyone provide me with the information ? Thanks.

Yeah, and it's just the beginning of a whole line : "we are truly honored to announce that starting next month we will introduce blue note by ropeadope - an entire line of t-shirts, jackets and accessories based on the legendary blue note history book. the first page? classic album art remixed." (from ropeadope website)

Some of you might be interested to check Sal Mosca website. I suggest that you listen to the MP3 files available in "Sal Ripped" section, especially the solo pieces from 1992. Beautiful.

My copy was issued by the British Boplicity label, under both Freddie Redd and Howard McGhee names, but it is not listed anymore on their website even if they mention it (on the left part).

Lundvall, Lundvall... this name reminds me of someone at Blue Note.

AMG forgets to mention that Lawrence played with Miles Davis for a short time. How a man who played with McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Miles Davis, Woody Shaw, etc. can disappear ?
-
I strongly recommend his "Profile" on Fresh Sound New Talent (produced by David Weiss). I think this album is the one which shows the best how Pelt has a singular voice on the horn, more than the MaxJazz or even the Criss Cross which are more conventional in their form.

Does anyone happens to know what ever Azar Lawrence has become since?

Mulligan Concert Jazz Band at Olympia
Vincent, Paris replied to Shrdlu's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Paris Concert album is taken from the archives of a French radio, named Europe1, which had a leading program - "Pour ceux qui aiment le jazz" - run by the same people who owned Jazz Magazine. The Olympia concert was taped and broadcasted by the radio, much later issued on CD by Trema, among a bunch of other concerts, now licensed to the German Delta Music/Laserlight. Granz may have gotten some copies after negotiating the recording rights but he was not, as far as I know, responsible for the recording itself. This had happened two years earlier when the Jazz Messengers played the Club Saint-Germain : they were recorded by the same radio and the sound turned so good that RCA could make three LPs out of the tapes. PS: I see my compatriot 'Brownie' posted qui the same story about the same time I was writting mine (he was there a the time B) ). Time difference runs our posts I believe. -
I came across some articles that I feel several board members will like to read. Articles from Saxophone Journal I recommend the Jerome Richardson interview (I don't think he had many occasions to tell his story - includes nice memories of the birth of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis big band, among others) and the Phil Woods article about the 50's and 60's NYC recording places (entitled "Reflections in E-Flat).
-
This interview was already featured on Mel Martin web site but the sound is worse and, as the tape is running slighty faster, Trane's voice sounds different.
-
I just wanted to share that picture with all the board members because I believe most of you would be as happy as I felt when I saw this online : I haven't seen often Bird with such a smile. This picture comes from Kim Parker website.

This is not what's written on the CD cover but, Chuck, you might be right and Universal France wrong.

As I said in the Eric Dolphy thread, this reissue has 2 unissued tracks. One is "ATFW" (stands for Art Tatum Fats Waller) which is a kind of introduction featuring Master Jaki Byard at the piano. The other is "So Long Eric", which is 20-minute long. This is a legal carefully remastered 2-CD set including pictures shot on the spot in its package.

Just got that new CD from Fresh Sound. A duo studio set, recorded in 2000, in Holland. Beautiful, very sensitive music with a masterful version of "My Funny Valentine". Recommended.

It seems that the label Fuel 2000has reissued a good part of that legendary new thing series, mostly recorded in Paris.

Thanks for the tip, Roi Ubu. I search for a long time but did not even notice that button down left!
