What vinyl are you spinning right now??
Homefromtheforest replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Roy Haynes "out of the afternoon" (impulse, mono am-par). Just picked this up for a pretty cheap price. Now decisions have to be made..do I keep my old stereo "abc paramount" issue which is *slightly* cleaner? The problems record nerds face... -
I love free jazz, but I must confess I sold my "live in Japan", "live in Seattle" albums many years ago because I never enjoyed them much. I don't want to listen to a 40 minute "my favorite things" or a 10 minute Jimmy Garrison solo. Sacrilegious? Perhaps. That said, I think "meditations" is a beast. I got rid of "Om" too and never bothered to hear the recent "temple" live release.

Chick Corea -The Sun / Marion Brown - Temps Fou Cd reissues

I have the original "le temps fou" LP, but will likely buy the CD too just because it's such a great album! -

Yup obis are nice but I decided long ago I'm not going to drive myself nuts looking for them. Had the same scenario with Lacy's "the wire" - had an opportunity some years ago to buy another copy with the OBI but at some point you gotta put a lid on the madness...at least a little bit -

A total classic! Had the original jewel box denon CD. Then I bought the original LP. Then I bought the mini LP reissue CD. Then I almost bought another copy of the original LP with OBI, but I resisted that moment of insanity! Needless to say I think this album is really awesome -

Akira Miyazawa "yaname" (King, Japan wave jazz 1994 reissue). An original is nearly impossible to find; so this exact replica reissue from 1994 will suffice..much nicer then the early 80s King reissue. Great album from 1962 with a very young Masahiko Sato! Woody Shaw "in the beginning" (muse, USA). Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder for Blue Note but never issued at the time. So that means this fantastic session can be had cheaply...I'm sure it would cost a small fortune if it ended up a Blue Note album given the cast(Joe Henderson, Larry Young, Joe Chambers, Herbie Hancock, etc) -
I may have to revisit as well. Used to own the "Juni" CD years ago but found it very forgettable at the time so got rid of it. I might pick this up...

J.R.Monterose "s/t" (blue note, Lexington USA). Sonny Clark "leapin and lopin" (blue note, stereo NY USA). A slightly later issue (no "ear") but it sounds excellent and I only paid about $7 for it around 5 years ago! One of my favorites... -

Yup I agree; great quote. I have CDs that sound incredible and LPs that sound incredible; it's all in the engineering/mastering. -

Well that does it! I'm taking my original blue notes to the dumpster right now -

I just upgraded my old polydor copy to a NM marmalade copy a year or two ago! Agreed; great album!! This is what I spun over the last few nights: Bobby Hutcherson "components" (blue note, stereo NY USA) Blue Mitchell "out of the blue"(riverside, mono USA) Donald Byrd "a new perspective" (blue note, mono NY ear) Joe Henderson "mode for Joe" (blue note, stereo NY) Toru Takemitsu "seasons/toward" (Deutsche Grammophone, Japan). Ultra cool original issue with 4 clear art inserts -
A true giant of the music; have many of his albums but sadly never got to meet him or see him perform live. I just played "dialogue" last night actually

Takeo Moriyama "flush up" (Teichiku, Japan). Intense modal/free jazz blast.. Oliver Nelson "the blues and the abstract truth" (impulse, AMPAR stereo). With the "sculpture" pic inside inner gatefold. I guess later issues have a photo of Oliver inside the gatefold. This is my third copy of this classic and my final upgrade..super clean and phenomenal sound! A total classic so worth the obsessiveness -

I used to own that Harriott LP myself but got rid of it because I found the recording quality really poor/dull... -

Jazz Workshop Bochum 1965 (Columbia, Germany). Today's find. A NM copy of this album featuring Rolf Kuhn, Roman Dylag, Idrees Sulieman, Ronnie Ross, Andrej Trzaskowski, and more. Excellent music and well recorded too! Paid $50 cad for it and feel it's worth every penny as I play it! -

Wayne Shorter "the all seeing eye" (Blue Note, stereo NY USA). I've had the RVG CD since it was released and finally got an original vinyl recently that is not plagued by the usual ringwear. What a lineup on this record! James Spaulding, Grachan, Freddie, Ron, Herbie, and Joe. Oh and Alan too on one cut! -

Nirvana "bleach" (sub pop, USA). I bought this in 1989 when it came out; I was 16 years old. I saw them live for the first time a year later when they opened for Sonic Youth in East Vancouver. They still were unloading their own crappy van and Dale Crover from the Melvins played drums on that gig. The second time I saw them was when I went to a Mudhoney gig at western Washington university in Bellingham. It was held at the gymnasium and nirvana was the "surprise" opening act. This was maybe a year or so later just after they got huge and before the release of "in utero". Anyway...good memories! -

Yup I totally agree Clifford. There's no way I could afford to buy original issues of every single album I like so I'm content with the Japanese reissues but I'll always keep my eyes peeled for deals on originals Right now: Freddie Hubbard "blue spirits" (blue note, NY USA stereo). Used to have a Liberty issue of this years ago that I got rid of, and I always regretted it. It's a solid date with some interesting lineups. -

Ted Curson "urge" (Fontana, Japan). DG 1st issue from 60s. Just found out there was a second run of Japanese issues of this Fontana series from the early 80s. Which means I may have to upgrade a few of my other records in this series. In fact I think the only Dutch original I own of this entire series is the Marion Brown "juba lee" album; all my other records in this series are Japanese issues. -
Unusual artist listings in alpha of my collection
Homefromtheforest replied to Chuck Nessa's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Databases!? Maybe when I'm retired and the kids are out of the house I'll have time to *start* on a database of my collection.... -
Thanks for sharing. Just last week I picked up the signature LP featuring this same very band!

Andrew Hill "point of departure" (blue note, stereo ny ear). A band like this should have recorded 10 more albums together... Herbie Hancock "takin off" (blue note, mono ny ear) Cluster "71" (Philips, Germany) -

Yeah that "rustle" drives me nuts, but my vertigo copy has some light marks on top of that so... Yeah that Oki is really nice...
