  5. For a while I have owned Discs 7,8,9 & 10 of the King Cole Trio Mosaic-they came in a Double Size Jewel case. Thanks to Kevin B here, I recently purchased more of the set. I got Discs 1 & 2 (each in regular singlular cases) and Discs 3,4,5 & 6 and Discs 11,12,13 & 14-each group in the Double Size Jewel cases, plus the booklet and box. So I have almost a complete set...but what I can't figure out is how they all fit in there. If I put the 3 Double Size Jewel cases and the 2 single CDs in there, they seem to take up all the room in the plastic insert in the box, with the booklet fitting under the CD plastic tray. So..how would the other discs fit in there? Is the Box I have with Nat on the cover, perhaps smaller than most? Do I have a lousy sense of space. Any help would be appreciated, and I know it's a long shot but if anybody has Discs 15-18 they want to sell, let me know!
  6. My Ebay Auctions? Some cool CDs, ignore the clothes...
  7. My Ebay Ella Gold Discs, Ray Charles, etc?
  8. I have nothing against a jazzbo (even a legend) making a pop album or a popper making a jazz album but in the end the music has to cut it on the new playing field and I think Herbie made a lame Pop album and Jamie Cullum and Michael Buble make lame fauz jazz. If you like em...go ahead on with your bad self.

  15. PM sent for Smith's Groovin At Smalls.
  16. You guys should be blaming Jerry Fuller the producer, if not your naive thinking "Gary" had much to do with the records. He was a club band singer out of San Diego who got signed to Columbia but the records were all Jerry's creations. He wrote most of them. Did the same for Al Wilson (SHow And Tell) and I think he produced Al's version of Oscar Brown Jr.'s "The Snake."
  17. The mastering is OK, but just OK, not noteworthy. Get it for the music and his voice.
  18. I found this at a used CD store, St. Louis Breakdown, The Best Of Oliver Sain and it turns out to be incredibly greasy. It comes from a Soul/Funk/R&B place more than jazz as a starting point. But as we all know, categories are meaningless. Oliver Sain, anybody know about this guy?
  19. He definitely uses the Varitone, it's easy to hear the lower octave if you listen for it. But the key is that it is mixed with his regular sound so as not to be obtrusive. As opposed to some of the Stitt sessions where his attitude seemed to be this is a different instrument, it's electric, get used to it.

    Feb 15 RVGs

That is good customer service! Actually he should be happy to have the Spanish version. I've had the JRVG and now the new RVG (for the bouns tracks) but the Stereo Spread on the Spanish verison is way better than either of those and makes it a keeper for me.
  21. Unfortunately I found the Groove Holmes and Melvin Sparks L.O.T.A.J. CDs lacking, and I really enjoy them both as players elsewhere. I did, however, really get a kick out of both volumes of Ivan "Boogaloo Joe" Jones from the series.
  22. I like the Paul's Mall recorded, O just wish it was recorded a little better, the CD I have is stereo (good) but the sound is a little compressed and distant. But they do have fun.
  23. Well after listening to the VME for a little while I would say.. The sound quality is better than Impressions, thanks to the mastering of Bob Irwin and Kip Smith, but it is not a radical improvement. It's not a big mystery as to the tracks after the first 5 not being by Van Gelder, in that Alan Grant is all over the palce ("...and now some musical musicians...") and at one point credits the engineers (Bob Dice, Sol Hockman, and Ronnie Sims) and says that part of the cost of the broadcasts are being underwtitten by the Half Note. Monkboughtlunch is right about the drum panning and if you prefer center or right is probably a matter of taste, I like em in the middle. Also, while impressions had Wes on the left for the Van Gelder tacks and on the right for the others, the VME palces Wes in the left for all tunes. I don't know if the tune "Impressions" is from a lower generation source but it sounds like reverb was added to Wes' guitar sound. While I thought Wes was recorded well by RVG, the bass and piano aren't the best to begin with so don't expect a huge improvement in the bass. I guess that's taste preferences, I've never thought RVG did well with pianos. For a sonic trat with these same guys and Johnny Griffin try to find the DCC version of FUll HOUSE. Wally Heider did a great original recording and Steve Hoffman remastered it from the session tape, as opposed to all other issues that used the mix down tape with reverb added. If you care about the above things should guide your choice whether to get the VME or not. Either way with that or Impressions, it's great music.
  24. When I used to travel in Texas, I used to love hearing "You can piss in my ear, but don't tell me it's raining."
  25. I will have to get back with a detailed view when I have the time to compare in depth. But on the basis of just a few minutes comparing, I noticed the remaster is hotter (louder)-not necessarily a bad thing unless compression was used and killed the dynamics. The Four On Six is the studio cut. On Willow the channels are reversed from Impressions. The remaster was done by Bob Irwin, who I really respect, he has done some great work at least in the rock field. His Jefferson Airplane and Paul Butterfield remasters are quite good.
