I agree with mikeweil about Honeysuckle Rose and "The Columbia Years." Chris Sheridan's "Brilliant Corners" was published before the release of this compilation and couldn't include it. Tom Lord's online discography also fails to take it into account. Trying to determine a recording date for the recording of Shuffle Boil on "Always Know" raises questions about how many takes were eventually released. There seem to be 3. According to Sheridan, a rejected take was attempted on 1-29-64 as matrix CO 81233, and as far as we know, was never released. However, Jazzdisco.org once listed this date as the source for "It's Monk's Time" (Columbia CL 2184/CS 8984) although the date has since been corrected. Another take (5:26) was recorded on 1-30-64 following Stuffy Turkey, which Sheridan lists as released on Columbia JG 35720 ("Always Know"). I don't have my copy of the LP at hand, but my notes list 1-30-64. Lord currently assigns this take to 3-9-64. The defunct Thelonious Monk Website (www.howardm.net/tsmonk/) also listed the date as 3-9-64. Jazzdisco.org agrees with Sheridan and attributes the "Always Know" take to 1-30-64. The take on CL 2184 is the longest recording, listed as 7:07 on the Legacy CK 63532 issue, where it is identified as "Retake," possibly in reference to the recordings at the January sessions. 81233-5 is the shortest released take and listed on 63352 as 4:51. If this is in fact take 5, there seems to be at least one take not accounted for and not released.

I saw the Ornette film at a Fort Worth theater when it was first released. My wife and I were the only people in the audience.

Both Scofield and John Abercrombie are listed as playing on Rudy Linka's "Lucky Southern" album. Does Sco play on the entire album? TJD Online doesn't specify.

Looking for Classics 945 Django Reinhardt-1944-1946
allblues replied to HolyStitt's topic in Offering and Looking For...
As far as I know, it's out of print and hard to find. Unfortunately, this material is split across two of the Fremeauxs, volumes 12 and 13, although those add a number of additional recordings not included on Classics 945. The 2 Swing sessions from 1946 with Grappelli are also part of the Mosaic box and JSP 904. -
The web site (http://www.inrainbows.com/) seems to be down, probably due to demand. Apparently, the files are MP3s encoded with LAME at CBR 160. Not exactly audiophile quality.

The US site has many, though not all, of their releases. Roland Kirk's Third Dimension and Beyond isn't available, for one.

eMusic added some new Gambit titles this week, including several by Bill Evans. I don't know for certain, but Monk's Complete Live at the Five Spot 1958 appears to be Blue Note's Live at the Five Spot with Nutty and Ruby My Dear added from TM with John Coltrane.

Tom Lord's discography is now online for an annual subscription fee. Has anyone tried it out or have any thoughts about it?

Tracklist Wanted for Rahsaan Roland Kirk Broadcast
allblues replied to allblues's topic in Discography
Thanks for the info, couw! The copy I received was split into 5 long tracks. I retracked it according to your tracklist, converted to mp3, created 3 zip files and uploaded them to Mediafire. I'll post the links here if that's permissible. If not, pm me for details. -
I received a copy of Rahsaan's WBCN broadcast from Boston's Jazz Workshop on October 31, 1972. Does anyone have a track list? Apparently, "Epistrophy" and "Blacknuss" were two of the titles. I think "I Say a Little Prayer" was on Dog Years in the Fourth Ring, but that leaves two tracks unaccounted for.

Miles - On the Corner and Beyond
allblues replied to Aggie87's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Overstock.com has it for $98.95 plus 2.95 shipping. -
With this band, you need the alternates. Everything they played is wonderful and timeless.

I found this Pete Cosey radio interview from last year for download.

I'd go for the first JSP set first. It has some excellent music not on the Mosaic set. I bought some of the Fremeauxs to fill in some gaps, especially the radio broadcasts. I've compared the Mosaic and JSP releases on headphones and it seemed that the JSPs have more surface noise. The Mosaics may be taken from cleaner sources or simply had more noise reduction applied. If it is the noise reduction, I don't think it's overdone. In fact, when I used Audition to reduce the surface noise on the JSPs to compare to the Mosaics, the Mosaics still sounded better to me. But, whichever you prefer, both are well worth the money.

If you have the Mosaic set and the JIPs and buy the Rome JSP set, there's a lot on the first JSP set you don't have (JSP 901): September 1934 (Delaunay's Jazz) December 1934 (QHCF) March 1935 (Coleman Hawkins) March 1935 (QHCF) April 1935 (QHCF) July 1935 (QHCF) August 1935 (Frank Goudie) September 1935 (Alix Combelle) September 1935 (QHCF) November 1935 (Garnet Clark) January 1938 (QHCF) February 1938 (Django-Stephane duets) August 1938 (QHCF) September 1938 (Django solo and Django-Stephane duets) August 1939 (QHCF) There's also these sessions represented on Django With His American Friends, DRG 8493 (available from emusic): April 1937 (Coleman Hawkins) July 1937 (Dicky Wells) September 1937 (Eddie South) November 1937 (Bill Coleman) November 1937 (Eddie South) March 1938 (Benny Carter) May 1938 (Larry Adler) April 1939 (Rex Stewart) There's also this session on Brussels and Paris, DRG 8473 (also available from emusic): May 1947 (QHCF) This doesn't include many of the recordings with French orchestras or vocalists nor the postwar airshots. You'd have to go with the Fremeauxs for most of these. In terms of sound quality, I think the Mosaic set sounds better than the JSPs, but the JSPs have better sound that the Classics or Fremeaux releases.

Count me as another rider on the Newbury bandwagon. -
Thank you so much! I've been away from the board for a while due to work obligations and a death in the family.

I've been looking for this too. I managed to figure most of it out with the help of the Connor books but would like to see what was in the Mosaic booklet.

Unfortunately, I picked the Giants. I went 7-9 last week, 94-66 on the season after 11 weeks. -

After last week's confusion, it looks like the season standings don't reflect the results from week 11. -

Edward, I picked 35 points and posted a few hours before you did on Wednesday. I changed my tiebreaker to 38. -

Agreed, I think this will minimize confusion. If SS1 is stepping down as scorekeeper, then I think Edward will be a great replacement. Aggie87, you should have joined us. With such a topsy-turvy season, your guesses are as good as mine. -
"We Gotta Live Together," the one song that overlaps between the single CD and 2-CD set, appears in a shorter form on Band of Gypsys without the lead-in from "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)."

All the teams played this weekend so there were 16 games. Everyone's due one more in the win column.
