  1. I loved that book when I read it in the 80s or early 90s. There was also an excellent TV series based on it in the UK. 'The Old Men at the Zoo' is good too.
  2. Someone could make a fortune developing some editing software with a De-Keithing setting.
  3. Not an exhibition but a three part BBC4 programme starting tonight which might interest those able to receive it. British Art at War: Bomberg, Sickert and Nash http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04j2ywv
  4. So I've heard one! Ho! Ho! One of the sightings was a famous west country folky bringing out his early teenage son to accompany him on this box. Suspect it was part of the attempt to lure him away from the evils of contemporary pop/rock and into daddy's world.
  5. Many thanks, Mike. Longer history than I'd thought. I just don't recall seeing them until this summer.
  6. Here's a Cajon solo: Seems to be impersonating a drum machine. Wonder if it's come out of that culture. Preparing for the forthcoming power cuts.
  7. Never noticed these before but they were all over the Sidmouth Folk Festival last month. Can't work out if they are a way of allowing the musically hopeless to join in or a rootsy involver like the tea chest bass in Skiffle that might lead on to greater things on other instruments. Can't say I've seen them in jazz (yet) and I'm not aware of a concerto. Explained here: http://www.thecajondrumshop.com/index.php?page=What-Is-A-Cajon
  8. I'm the least funky person on the planet but I love the Crusaders and Jazz Crusaders. R.I.P.
  9. There's one in Sainsbury's in Worksop! Saw it today. £180.
  10. I pretty sure it is. I have a feeling the nominations were in the copy I was reading.
  11. I've enjoyed those Syd Arthur records since BFrank mentioned them earlier in the year. The singer has an odd voice but they are enjoyable records. In the summer I picked up a copy of a monthly called 'Prog' or something. Could not believe how many bands (most of which I'd never heard of) are working under that label. It remains the most unfashionable rock genre in the UK yet there is this huge underground. I don't have the time or inclination to explore it very far but I'm glad to see it there. http://prog.teamrock.com/
  12. Some comments on this sad situation here, along with support being offered by fellow musicians:
  13. Long overdue (I appreciate Ogun is a cottage industry). For a while you could get info on Ogun current releases on the Cadilllac website. Be nice to have a place you can go to know the state of play of releases. I'm never quite sure when the release date of their records are - the Moholo-Moholo quartet one, for example, due around now. Ogun is a treasure trove of music. But if you don't know it's there you could miss it.
  14. Looks promising: http://ogunrecords.com/ Or has it been doing that for eternity?
  15. I've been listening to this (and two others from the time) off E-music downloads. Remember 'The Machine Gun Co' album cover from the time but never knew the music. Haven't internalised it yet but as Jazzjet says, it is in its own world. Very much part of the experimental atmosphere of the time.
  16. now that they're being retired, there may well be a relative flood of them hitting ebay and secondhand shops and so on. that should allow you to stock up, hopefully on a steep discount. think of all the ipods that have been sitting around as the iphone has grown to replace it. however, you'll fill your shelves in the "before everyone realizes what they've done" phase (which reminds me of what it must have been like to be a crate digger when the compact disc was introduced). What a good idea. I could ramble on about how much better the iPod Classic was compared with .... whatever the most recent format happens to be.
  17. Seems to be about getting noticed in a market with a lot of supply but limited demand. We're awash with piano trios in Britain and every month we're told of another incredible one from the continent. The ones I've heard sound like excellent musicians but with that volume how do you tell them apart? Advertising yourself as the Fred Bloggs Trio will make you indistinguishable from the Minnie Mouse Trio to the causual observer scanning the press for a concert to go to. But the 'Fred Bloggs Trio Play Fats Waller' will include a point of reference to many more listeners. I notice this a lot on the local jazz club scene here. In fact one of Britain's most successful live pulls, Alan Barnes, seems to do one of these every other album (and very enjoyably). I suspect it's economic reality that leads to these things; finding an angle to get you noticed above the flood.
  18. I was determined not to buy this. But also cracked at the weekend. Which makes it certain I'll go for Starless too. The power of advertising.
  19. Much prefer symphonies or other non-solo orchestral pieces to either. I like a more democratic use of the orchestra above the star soloist in the foreground. Which is not to say that I don't enjoy many concertos. I also prefer 20thC examples. Can't say I have a preference for violin or piano.
  20. You could have had my vinyl! I only use the CD now. One of my favourite Oguns (though be aware they have the titles on side 2 reversed on the LP cover - not that that will affect listening pleasure). Now he tells me! Happy to house any other redundant Oguns I'll send you a PM at the weekend.

  22. I know this has been up before, but...
  23. I've got 10 iPods!!!!! Took all but one on holiday with me. For the very reasons MG says - I don't know what I want to hear until I want to hear it. Also use them constantly in the car on the work run, at work after classes are over and I'm working in the office, when out walking, in the garden and early in the morning so I can roam around the house without the danger of music leaking through the walls and disturbing the neighbours. And for hose cleaning...you can hear the music over the Hoover.
