  2. For a few years now some Zorn releases contain so much sugar there should be a sticker on them warning you to make an appointment with your dentist upon listening anyway. And not that I mind.
  3. MP4 Tools I use it to convert .mkv files to something playable on my PS3. After creating a playable file you can also use the program to split it into smaller chunks.
  4. There is an option to mark all as read.
  5. Amazon.co.uk cancelled the order stating the item was incorrectly priced. Oh well, I can't blame them.
  6. The one or two Alice Coltrane CDs I previewed at the record store could have been safely used for target practice with a firearm, but perhaps I just picked the wrong ones, and the store's background noise might have made me impatient.
  7. Sunny here too, but still only a few degrees above freezing. Some very welcome sunshine in my living room.
  8. A few hours after I placed my order for two of the Davis sets the price is up again from £5.12 to £29.52. Thanks, JohnJ.
  9. That Davis set would make for a wonderful gift. I think I'll order two for that purpose.
  10. I searched around a bit on the Hoffman board (I don't post there) and it seems only the first six are actually by Alan Yoshida, Out To Lunch among them. Apparently he has requested they remove his name from the others. Also, it seems HD Tracks do not always provide the best customer experience. So, I'd proceed with caution in the event you're thinking of buying any more of their releases. I'm glad Out To Lunch wasn't a disappointment to you. I also think the prices are too high. Also, on the Monks, you get none of the alternate takes from the RVGs. Misterioso (on the RVG Milt Jackson) is there, but Criss Cross isn't, not even the master take. Perhaps this reflects the track lists from the original LPs? Still, it looks like they are trying to maximize profit in an unpalatable manner.
  11. As I said, I'm content with the RVGs I kept, but most are not what they could or should have been, a lot are an outright failure imo. More must have been possible with current technology as the XRCD24s, APO SACDs and HD Tracks FLACs demonstrate.
  12. When I heard Hank Mobley's Soul Station XRCD24 mastered by Alan Yoshida it made me even more anxious and frustrated about my RVGs. Like the APO of Idle Moments. If that is how good these BN albums can sound... These HD Tracks BN classics are worth it primarily because of the debacle of the RVG series imo. Finally a proper remaster. Even when reduced to 16-bit and burned to a CD they sound great.
  13. I hope you won't be disappointed. Do you own any of the XRCD24 discs from Audio Wave or the hybrid SACDs from APO?
  14. I'm comparing a rip of the McMaster to the HD Tracks release now by connecting my Sennheisers to my iMac. There is no need to adjust volume levels going back and forth. The 24-bit FLACs are far more detailed. Like a curtain is lifted. Perhaps this is what is alluded to in those reviews on All About Jazz of Music Matters 45rpm LPs? I don't think the Norah Jones FLACs would make as much of a difference as these sixties BN albums. Note that the 2013 releases like the Monks and Hutcherson are mastered by a different person, Bernie Grundman.
  15. I think I saw Ran first (Criterion DVD) and think it was a good choice, for me at least. Not exactly short, though.
  16. Out To Lunch was remastered by Alan Yoshida and sounds fantastic. It's just a bit expensive at $17.98 or $24.98. I heard you talk about lost dynamic range earlier on. Now I'm no audiophile by any stretch of the imagination, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
  17. Free For All is awesome indeed, so is Out To Lunch.
  18. Of course 50 % is exactly what you'd expect, given a .wav and a FLAC made from that same .wav are 'the same.'
  19. The HD Tracks Blue Note store.
  20. Don't get me wrong, I love the FLAC format and am in the process of making secure rips of my entire collection, but FLAC downloads can only ever get me interested if they are 24-bit 96kHz or 192kHz. And why do these HD Tracks downloads have to be so pricey? Also, HD Tracks not selling their wares to people outside of one country (in this case the U.S.A.) brings to mind the horror of DVD/Blu-ray region coding. A real pain in the ass if you live in a small country like The Netherlands where you will have to be content with mostly shitty releases produced for the local market. At least now we have the freedom of choice to import any CD release we fancy.
  21. My eyesight isn't what it used to be. Could you print that a little bigger for us old guys? I'd prefer a braille card by snail mail. And my CDs over almost any download.
  22. Night Owl Early Bird A Lark Ascending
  23. Shaken, but not emotionally stirred?
  24. From Lion (10.7) on OS X is only available as a download through the App Store. Since you own either Lion or Mountain Lion (10.8) you should probably be able to download a .dmg file through the App Store for free and use this to make a USB install drive if you wish.
