  1. I read a few threads on that with contributions by our J.A.W. among others on the Hoffman board and the outcome was this set has the same mastering. My set does. The vocals are shrill on the earlier discs. There is a 4 CD set with only master takes from about 2007 with better mastering. I've yet to pick that up. I did download that set for comparison's sake and it does have better sound on the vocals.
  2. I bought the same thing in different packaging for €10 a few years back. They just repackaged the thing as one of those popmarket sets for a more money. Still a good deal compared to what the original set cost in the early 2000s. The sound is the same on all of these.
  3. Huzzah! Murray wins!
  4. Sopranos marathon, all six seasons, a couple of episodes a week. I need to fit in another viewing of Breaking Bad season 5 part 1 before 11 August. Final season of Dexter out of loyalty to a once enjoyable show.
  5. More Hommy Klein (He has a message. I believe!)
  6. Yes. "The Rosetta Stone of modern jazz" they called it. I have the fourth edition of the Penguin Guide to thank for putting me on to a lot of classic albums and other essential releases like the Plugged Nickel set. Subsequent editions of the guide have been of far less value to me.
  7. It seems Microsoft were the real dummies when it comes to Windows 8. I wish I could help you, but your friend has my sympathy.
  8. Good for me it's still available. I used to be more into 50s hardbop during the nineties/early 2000s than lately, so I've neglected to pick this up so far. I must perhaps give it priority on ze list.
  9. What year did it go out of print? (I bought mine in 1999.)
  10. £13.50 for a new CD. Not bad considering it's out of print.
  11. The one that was hardest for me to digest of those first three was Sketches Of Spain (tracks 2, 3, etc.).
  12. Yeah, I remember picking up the Plugged Nickel set in Canada at A&B Sound during a 20% off sale and even then it was over $100. Worth every cent of course - to me it was like discovering the Rosetta Stone of Miles Davis, at the time. It was great discovering how these tunes Miles had been playing through the years with his different bands were completely transformed by the time of the Plugged Nickel recordings. I believe it greatly helped me in my appreciation of this music, even though initially it was a bit overwhelming. The second great quintet is still my favorite Miles Davis band. The first Davis albums I ever bought were Kind Of Blue, Sketches Of Spain, and Nefertiti. Good decision making for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
  13. These companies own a lot of the most important art of the twentieth century and all they are interested in making a profit for investors. Fuck preservation, availability, etc.
  14. My fault for taking things too literally.
  15. Since the start of summer I've been wearing my winter coat daily.
  16. Seriously? I would never lent my set to anyone. A strange story you having to give out such a warning. "Oh, by the way, Scott, I sold that rare CD box you borrowed me. Here's your cut."
  17. (Sorry, original post removed, new kosher link provided. ) Is anyone here familiar with the bootleg Live In Tokyo 1984 (Flock Records)? I'm interested in the sound quality and on what tracks Adams sings (the less the better). http://www.donpullen...disco/tokyo.htm 1. City Gates (Adams) 18:40 2. Duke Ellington's Sound Of Love (Mingus) 16:58 3. Seriously Speaking (Adams) 8:16 George Adams (ts,fl,voc) Don Pullen (p) Cameron Brown (b) Dannie Richmond (dr) Rec. 14.11.1984 live at Ginza Yamaha Hall, Tokyo, Japan CD: Flock Records FLK-32019 (2012)
