Does Your Wife or Significant Other Love Jazz?
Pim replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Miscellaneous Music
No she does not. She can tolerate the more easy and more accessible jazz like Chet Baker or Ben Webster. I thinks she even likes Billie Holiday. But even most hardbop is already too busy for her. But more soulful bop like Adderley is more preferred than most hardbop and definitely postbop. and when I am playing some late Coltrane, Don Cherry or Cecil Taylor she looks at me like I am crazy. She does like the crossovers with classical and world music on ECM by the way. She looks at music in a different way than me. While I see it mostly as an art form with strong emotion and feeling as a basic. She likes it more when you can or dance to it or you can have it somewhere in the background. -
Well it’s definitely The Netherlands’ PostNL that delay things. Ordered two cd’s separately from Japan. They left the country within 4 days. But they are now in Holland for more than a week. They aren’t even checked in at customs yet so best case scenario it would take another week.

Live stuff from his very best period. Great music. And Isla Eckinger is on fire!

Okay so my stuff arrived today. To be precisely this is what I have ordered: So that is quite a lot and yeah it’s all pretty rare too. That was the reason why I tried it this way. So what was the damage buying this stuff trough Buyee: Total price for all the items: 219 euros Of which were fees: 30 euros + domestic and international shipping: 65 euros in total (Express Shipping) Total damage: 284 euros. So that is about 26 euros a disc including everything. Now I also made a calculation when I would have ordered every item separately trough Discogs sellers. I take the cheapest available and if not available take the median price. Then total amount for all the items would have been: 325 euros. But that is without shipping of course. Almost every single item should have been shipped from Japan. So let’s take modest 10 euros per item (it’s more expensive most of the time). Than that adds another 110 euros. So the total damage would have been 435 euros. Best case scenario. So 151 euros is a big difference! So the final conclusion is: Proxy buying sites like Buyee are definitely recommended: if you have seen that one rare item on a Japanese Yahoo, Rakuten or Amazon marketplace. That one item you never managed to get. Or those items that are ridiculously overpriced on Discogs and eBay but very cheap on those same Japanese websites. Proxy buying is definitely not recommendable for all your day to day CD and Vinyl shopping. Use it rarely and wisely but if you do it, do it good, because combining all those items will save you quite a lot and is the only way to make it really count. And of course keep in mind that your package might be taxed upon arrival. I was a lucky bastard this time….

No, not that I know. Maybe the book seller payed some from his own pocket? That is at least what I do these days to not spook US buyers.

Yeah It must be on it’s way to NYC I think. Maybe you’re lucky Dan, mail is full of surprises these days. about the expedited: I got screwed over by Japan Post with their EMS service. Takes just as long as normal air mail but cost me 30 euros more. I could hit myself in the head for it.

Well, as some state here that USPS suck, in my opinion: PostNL sucks too! Till now almost every heavy delay I experiencedwas to blame on PostNL. The packages departured pretty early from country of origin but were kept endlessly in the Netherlands.... Not to speak of the ridiculous rices they dare to ask for shipping these days: 28 euros for a cd to the US! Insane! Using the COVID crisis as an excuse that is really lame. It is generally known that PostNL has more business than ever. And simultaneously not paying their employees with flex contracts.

Yeah, a select would have been great!

Alright so I am now the happy owner of this one. But to be honest: I did not expect this to be this good. I mostly bought it in my neurotical obsession to collect Mal Waldron's music. I thought it's rareness made it to be wanted this much. Its a pity the SQ is not optimal but still.... Every musician on it seems to be in prime form. Mal's great, so is Art Taylor. Jimmy Woode is insanely good (really he rocks this record) but also Davis: I am a happy owner of The Hip Walk and Happy Girl but on those records he sounds like a fine bop player. Here: he seems to have evolved a little more. His playing is clever but also dark and full of emotion. The interaction between the whole band is lovely. I am really curious if a really good remaster could make this record even better. So this record woke up my interest in Davis again. What's your guys opinion on these records: Peace Treaty Rules of Freedom Makatuka 6th Sense in the 11th House

Ok thanks guys. I think I was mixing up with some EU public domain label with a similar name I guess...

Is that real gone music label any good? Soundwise?

I shipped a cd from the Netherlands to the U.S. and it arrived within 2 weeks. That was with DHL.

Thanks! Arrived today so gonna give it a spin tomorrow

Buyers beware of Japanese shipping options like EMS. I have paid an extra 25 euros for that option. Promised to arrive within 2-3 days. Now I did calculate that clearance and handling would take more than that but after 4 days, the package haven’t even left the country. chose this option because another package got lost and another took 1,5 month to arrive. I feel a bit ripped off...

I’ve got the Japanese version but shipping costs to the US are ridiculous.... sorry Felser!

Philly Joe on Archie Shepp French recordings for America.

According to the Norwegian seller, shipping to USA is 5 euros without jewel case and 8 with one. That’s not unreasonable!

Woman reviews her husband's "stupid record collection"
Pim replied to blind-blake's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Sorry to have missed that. Would have liked to read what she had to say. My wife hates jazz from the bottom of her heart. But hey.... practice makes perfect. After listening for a good ten years to my music she could accept stuff like Adderley, Bean, Prez, Oscar Peterson, Grant Green and so on. She loves Lady Day. Well, it was enough for me to ask her to marry me. But free jazz stays a no go. When I am listening to it and she enters the room I even feel some kind of misplaced guilt... Like I am watching dirty porn or something... She really has the worst taste in music possible. My wife likes everything that's in a Top list of popular music. And the very worst thing she likes: lame solo piano versions of popular songs. Elevator music you know. But hey: I still love her. -
COVID-19 III: No Politics For Thee
Pim replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Hope it's just a cold! My 1.5 year old son had a fever two weeks ago. Wanted to get him tested but they warned us that the test was really an awful experience for such a young child. So we stayed at home for a week and then it appeared to be the sixth disease, or Roseola as some people call it I thinks. Anyway, nothing bad fortunately. My boy can see his grandparents again -
Yeah there is of course the chance of getting taxed on top of it. I’ll make up the total costs ordering this way trough Buyee and ordering them seperately trough the regular shops. But for now I am going to have a lot of patience!

Still not available for pre-order. Anyone who knows more?
