Okay thanks guys. Really like what I am hearing and bad sound isn’t a show stopper for me but like to hear it in the best way possible at least. Khan Jamal is also on fire in this one
Listening to this one now trough Spotify and I am fascinated by it. Sound is pretty bad. Does anyone know if the 2008 cd reissue was an improvement over the original LP?
For those unfamiliar with it: it’s with Jerome Cooper, Khan Jamal and some lesser know but excellent musicians:
Hopefully you’ll be able to pick up an affordable copy. It would make a beautiful candidate for the Craft Contemporary 70th anniversary series but I thinks it’s probably too far ‘out’ for that.
Sonny Simmons: Burning Spirits. What a great record and what a great band: Barbara Donald, Michael White, Lonnie Liston Smith, Cecil McBee, Richard Davis and Clifford Jarvis.
Happy birthday mr. Haynes. So much respect for you and all your contributions to the music. I wish I'd been able to tell people I played with both Charlie Parker and John Coltrane.... As long as it's in good health: many years for you to come please!
I should have been more clear. With local I did not necessarily mean amateur. But they were local and never really got a superstar status while they all really shine on those Waldron records. Isla Eckingers bass playing is stunning for example.
I looked up the mail from Fred but I now see he did not give any details on format or personell. Mal was a very busy bee in those years, playing with so many musicians. I’d say chances are big it’s a trio date with some local musicians but it could be anything really
That’s one I could listen to for hours.
now playing:
32 Jazz is notorious for their ugly artwork which looks like it was made in Microsoft Word 1995 edition… but now that I am listening to it on headphones I can’t say I really like the sound either. Way too much bass in my right ear. I don’t know how the original copies sound. Anyway this session deserves a proper reissue on cd and vinyl. But that goes for a large part of the Muse catalogue.
Don’t know how those sound but the Shihab record is very nice. Not a five star thing but definitely more than average. Worth having very well!
Which ones did he mention? I know there’s a 1969 Mal Waldron trio session upcoming I a looking very much forward to.
Have there been cases of fake LP scams yet? One might say that would be a lucrative business these days and an LP might be easier to falsify than a painting?
lovely series on High Note this is. Volume 1 is my favorite for the presence of Carter Jefferson and the compositions like Love Dance and Why. Stafford James plays some serious bass here
