Robert Kennedy's assassination in 1968. I was 19 years old and a student at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. I had seen him just a few days before when he made a campaign appearance on campus. Walter Cronkite sharing the news of John Kennedy's death. I was attending Jesuit High School at the time and I remember like it was yesterday the announcement of the assassination attempt coming over the loudspeaker in our classroom. We were let out of school right afterwards and I had gotten home in time to see Cronkite's announcement. I was also entranced by the Watergate Hearings. They were underway right before I got my first real job.

Anyone still want to argue that Barry Bonds didn't take steroids or HGH? In case you didn't recognize him, he's the one on the left.

Another blown save. Yes, it's Jon Stewart.

this link sends me to a Google sign-in, James. I deleted my post. Not sure why it won't work, but it doesn't. BTW, it's OK to call me Dave.

I think his longevity in New York is a function of how well he performs. He's 38 and has some miles on him, but he's always kept himself in great condition and he doesn't have the sort of swing that will abandon him any time soon. He plays solid outfield, still has the great arm and can steal a base or two. I could easily see him in pinstripes for another couple of years. And given the age of the rest of the team, he'll fit right in. All things considered, including the low cost, a smart and savvy acquisition.

2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs Thread

Depends on how much a one way player is worth. Nash doesn't play much "D". Don't get me wrong, I would love to have seen him in a Red Wing sweater, but Detroit is reported to have made Columbus a "substantial" offer for Nash and they wouldn't even return their phone calls. The only two free agent questions that remain to be resolved involve Shane Doan and Alexander Semin. Doan will most likely stay in Phoenix and Semin's reputation will probably land him in the KHL. -
The Yanks open up a three game set with the Mariners tonight in Seattle. Wonder if the new guy will get a shot? It's not like he wouldn't be familiar with right field. LATE BREAKING NEWS: I have been authorized to extend to all disenfranchised Seattle fans a special one time only offer...an unheard of mid-season exception that will offer each and every one of you full membership in the Yankee Fan Club. Just let me know where you'd like me to send your Application To Become A Yankee Fan. Needless to say, your request must still be approved, but I'll put in a good word for you. And don't forget. The Yankee tent has always been a big tent. There's plenty of room for everyone.

Towards the end of the NYT article, there's mention of Davis working with a friend on a book about Owsley Stanley. Does anyone know anything about that?

Apparently, Penn State officials have decided to remove the controversial Paterno statue. Also, the NCAA will rule tomorrow as to what size shoe they will be dropping on the school's football program. Maybe we're finally within hailing distance of closure on the public portion of this despicable episode. -

Some guy who bought the painting at a thrift store for $5, noticed that it was signed with the initials FZ. That got him thinking about whether those initials might have stood for Frank Zappa. He contacted the History Detectives and, as they do, they set out to prove or disprove its provenance. They would up talking to Zappa's brother and one of the foremost authorities on Zappa lore, neither of whom could recall Frank doing anything like this, although they did point out that he worked for a greeting card company as an artist at one time and that he also had a hand some television commercials that involved both graphics and electronic music. What finally settled the issue was a visit with Zappa's wife who met the investigator at a place called "The Professional Drum Shop" in Los Angeles. As it turns out, the painting was an original and its subject was the drum shop. Zappa started out as a drummer and spent a lot of time at this store in the early 60's. They were even able to show some of the objects that Zappa painted including an old boxing ring bell that they used to rent out for sound effects. Like I said, very interesting. Here's the whole show if anyone is interested in watching it. My link

Thanks, Lon. I had not seen that article. I think I'll go ahead and mount this thing and see what happens. Having said that, the bass does sound quite good without it. The problem with palm muting on the EB2 is that there's only one pickup and it's mounted pretty much on the neck. I haven't found it to be very convenient in terms of the proper hand positioning. The guitar also has a baritone switch positioned between the tone and volume knobs that deepens the sound when it's engaged.

BASS QUESTION. Via trades, I have acquired a 1969 Gibson EB-2 semi-hollow body. Amongst the case candy, there was a brush style mute. I've Googled around a bit but I haven't been able to determine what this accomplishes sound-wise if it's attached under the bridge cover. Anyone know anything about this?

Just LIke A Woman was originally recorded as part of my favorite Haven LP, Mixed Bag. That one is chock full of great tunes. What always fascinated me about Havens is how easily he could take other people's songs and make them sound like they were uniquely his own. Saw it. Absolutely fascinating. I was also amused by the story about Seeger running around backstage trying to get the sound people to shut off the electricity so Dylan couldn't play. The investigation involving the Frank Zappa artwork was also very intriguing. I'm proud to say the History Detectives is locally produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting for PBS.

Night Letter is one of my all-time favorite Stitt albums. I've had it on the single CD Prestige version for years.

Stupidest Comedy Movie Ever...

True that. I remember seeing Jacques Tati's Mr. Hulot's Holiday when I was in college and laughing my ass off. I saw it about 20 years later and was bored to the point of distraction. -
No idea who wrote it. Here's the track listing if it's any help. http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/jazz_sahib_-_complete_sextets_sessions_1956-1957_2-cd_set-cd-4937.html
