  1. I haven't read a "real" book in years. The Kindle is a godsend. You can adjust the print size, the backlighting and the font style to your liking. For someone who likes to read in bed, there's nothing even close. I even bought a case with a strap on the back so you don't drop it it if you nod off. I just don't know what I'm going to do with the hundreds of physical books in my library that I haven't read and probably never will.
  2. Are you familiar with Quora? It's a Q&A website. Here's a link to the discussion: https://www.quora.com/Can-anyone-really-tell-the-difference-between-a-WAV-file-and-a-high-quality-MP3. As you may well imagine, there are differing opinions.
  3. Came across this while I was reading an article on sound reproduction, i.e, hi res vs. mp3. The article was making the point that when you listen, it's not just with your ears but your brain as well. Just like when you see something, it's not just your eyes. Thought it was interesting enough to share.
  4. When jazz is holding on by its fingernails, Myers is doing as much as anyone to keep it relevant. You may disagree with his methodology, but I don't see how anyone can question his motives.
  5. Considering the cost, his potential effect on the clubhouse, that his signing with either the White Sox or the Phillies has no direct impact on the regular season and the fact that Andujar's star is still rising, I'd prefer that the Yankees pass on Machado.
  6. In what may be an attempt to help lure Manny Machado, the White Sox have agreed to a one-year, $4 million deal with Machado's training partner, outfielder Jon Jay. The two train together in the offseason in Miami along with Machado's brother-in-law Yonder Alonso.

  8. Several years ago, I recall a lively discussion that took place here following the final episode of The Sopranos. The 20th anniversary of the series premier is just around the corner and in conjunction with that milestone, a book has recently been released called "The Soprano Sessions". In the New York Times review, there are some interesting revelations based on interviews with series creator David Chase as well as a more generalized discussion about the impact of the series on television programming. Here's link to the article: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/30/books/sopranos-sessions-matt-zoller-seitz-alan-sepinwall-interview.html?emc=edit_bk_20190108&nl=book-review&nlid=5818974520190108&te=1
  9. Like the article said: "Happy wife, happy life". Gotta keep those home fires burning.
  10. This appearance on The Tonight Show was particularly amusing. Johnny pretended to take him seriously while Super Dave attempted in vain to protect his image.
  11. Ever wonder how the term "drag racing" originated? A drag is somewhat like a low car: it was used for the carriage of timber, and then is drawn by the handle by two or more men. By the 18th century, smaller drags/drays were being used for the hawking of goods, and the poor souls who hauled them around had the ingenious idea of adding wheels. Before long, the term 'drag' came to be used for the thoroughfares along which drags were trundled. The 'roadway' meaning of drag was transferred from England to the USA and, in the 1950s, the teenage pastime of racing cars 'along the main drag' began to be called 'hot rodding' or 'drag racing'.
  12. From the unplumbed depths of the highly unlikely, if Mosaic can do Bing, Rosemary, Sarah, Ella and The Four Freshman, how about a split box of Blossom Dearie and Mel Torme?
  13. That's why I used the term "targeted".
  14. Wonder what became of his stunt co-ordinator, Fuji? He never got anywhere near the credit he was due. Without him, there's no Super Dave and the world would be a lesser place.
  15. As long as we acknowledge that this is all but wishful thinking, I'd like to see "targeted" Mosaic box sets from Earl Bostic, Georgie Auld and Jimmy Rowles.
  16. I have not heard that directly accredited to Machado, but if he wants to sign with New York, I think he'll have to do it their way. I don't think the tail will wind up wagging the dog.
  17. I don't think this says much about Machado. Assuming he can stay healthy, Tulowitski is the bridge at shortstop between opening day and the return of Didi Gregorios. The Yankees have always been interested in Machado as a third baseman. The "tell" here is what they do with Andujar.
  18. Does anyone else hear Ben Webster or reasonable facsimile on The Clovers' version of "Blue Velvet'?
  19. The latest: https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2812632-mlb-rumors-bryce-harper-manny-machado-prefer-yankees-over-phillies?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=mlb
  20. David, I'd rather see the the Yanks sign Harper. He can play first base or the outfield. Say no to Machado. I think he's a cancer. What I can't figure out is why the Cashman is so anxious to move Anduhar. The kid is only 23, he can hit, hit for power and plays adequate, if not inspired defense. Not to mention that he was runner-up for AL ROY. I'd move Gleyber Torres to SS, sign an FA or go with Raphael Torres at second, leave Anduhar at third and wait for Didi to get better. I don't think Bird will ever work out as a hitter and it's rolling a pretty big pair of dice to assume Luke Voit will replicate his performance at the end of last season.
  21. I guess you could say that HOF voters are horse-hidebound.
  22. All you have to do is look at his by-line. Worcester, Massachusetts. That tells me everything I need to know. Someone needs to remind Mr. Ballou that you don't invent your own criteria for election (or rejection) out of whole cloth. If you buy into his rationale, then no reliever should be in the HOF. I'd like to have a look at his voting record. Something tells me that at some point, he probably voted for a closer.
