Album Covers w/Three Women Who Are NOT The Artists
king ubu replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
not The Artists (whoever those are) but The Puppini Sisters (want a new thread for albums covers with three dames called sisters that aren't? ) Oh, and artists they are indeed, at least in my humble opinion .... retro shtick, of course, but -
Mine doesn't have that issue (nor did the one I held in my hands in the store ... that one was sealed so I can't say anything else about it). Where did you buy yours?
-
Which Dizzy albums would actually be really essential, anyways? Besides the music with Bird and the early Big Bands on Savoy and RCA (and Uptown and other live recordings)? There's a large number of excellent albums (the Mosaic going OOP right now has plenty of them, for instance, there's the 1956/57 big band, the Granz pairings) ... I'm not sure myself, I might arrive at a list like this: Gillespie/Rollins/Stitt - Sunny Side Up Dizzy Gillespie at Newport (1957) Stuff Smith & Dizzy Gillespie That's a short list which certainly does not amout to enough 50s/60s Dizzy for sure ... so I might throw in some of the live music like the excellent "Gillespiana/Carnegie Hall Concert" twofer or some of the stuff from Paris ... maybe "Perceptions", or more likely the MPS album from Berlin 1968 ... as good as the band with Moody/Barron was, I'm not sure I'd dub any of it "essential", but I'd really not want to give the music away, still.
-
Done! Actually thought about him, but forgot to add him as I did w/Murray and Waldron ... Those Lindbergs look indeed mighty fine! I only know two or three of his discs on other labels (between the lines mostly) as a leader and they're very good.

wiki's BS/SN entry lists three albums ... not sure how complete that listing is though
-
I know ... but inheritance laws tend to help those that have amass more ... and ought to be changed. But we're not allowed to talk politics here
-
But the descendants still have the right to withhold simply because they want it ... to me the notion of inheriting works of culture is an extremely odd one in general. I find it hard to grasp that sons and daughters should hold any rights to a book or piece of music or art created by their father or mother. Now with spouses, that's a different thing, but I can't come to grips with the fact that maybe there's some seventh-grade cousin to Lester Young's bother's grand-grand-grand-child and that cousin has any claims to make there.
-
No rush from my side either .... still miss a few (all but the Abrams of the penultimate batch, I think - Douglas, Lewis, Hemphill, Adams they are). But sets by Bang, Roach, or Mitchell would be highly welcome at any time ... no need for Hill, the rest of Abrams or Lyons here, got all those, but that's some mighty great stuff there!
-
Oh, thanks for kick-starting my memory ... I remember again now. Would be all for it!

Yes please!

What's your take on "Hum Dono" actually? No idea how feasible it might be on the side of laws and stuff, but musically, ain't it wonderful? Sad story about the "Ne Plus Ultra" masters - wow! But that live material ... from what time is it and who's playing with Marsh there? Sounds like a great plan to me, either way! Also most happy to hear the Daley is going to happen :tup
-
I guess it might be more about being afraid of GREED? Of silly lawsuits (there seem to be many of those in the US) that will cost money, and time too, and keep the music from being released? Mosaic should start a European subsidiary!

More Lacy, too ... and loads of other good stuff, I bet!

Clifford Brown with Zoot Sims "Jazz Immortal"
king ubu replied to Tom 1960's topic in Recommendations
Yes, discs 3 and 4 contain the Blakey recordings, discs 1 and 2 the Blue Note and Pacific studio sessions ... not 100% what's on the Memorial Album (never had it outside of this box), but both the Donaldson/Brown and the Brown sessions are included (June 9 and August 28, 1953), as well as the J.J. Johnson session with Brownie. (I never got any of those on RVG CDs again ... had McMasters of the Birdland discs and gave them away ... guess the box is McMaster, too, but I'm at work right now and can't check). -
Clifford Brown with Zoot Sims "Jazz Immortal"

Oh, I strill remember how badly I wanted that Mulligan! When Blue Note put out the 2CD set of the Original Quartet w/Chet I was so happy ... started piecing it all together, but the last bit (the Annie Ross album) only came my way via the Mosaic Select, a few years back. But the Brownie set I did get - that "book" edition, it's indeed very nice ... and that west coast album came as the biggest surprise to me (I knew the Blakey material before, but none of the contents of discs one and two). -
WHOAH!
-
Yes indeed! His liners to the very good "The Art of Three" are another great read. Love how totally un-blasé he comes across ... yet obviously he's got his stuff together.

John Coltrane - Live at Temple University 1966-official release!
king ubu replied to king ubu's topic in New Releases
Well, they really ought to start the Coltrane Bootleg Series ... there's such an abundance of material, that "Live Trane" box with all the botched info is merely the tip of the iceberg! -
Doesn't sound like some odd late april fool's day joke ... source: http://pitchfork.com/news/54512-john-coltrane-1966-temple-university-concert-to-be-released-in-full-for-first-time/ (can some moderator please replace the "&" in the thread title with an exclamation mark? I only get error messages in trying to do so myself)

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
king ubu replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Played the Dexter set to the end a few days ago - lovely one! Now: da shit!
