Just found this: http://www.musik.uni-osnabrueck.de/veranstaltungen/tagungen/musik_bezieht_stellung_funktionalisierung_der_musik_im_1_weltkrieg/english_version.html Most of the articles in the book resulting from this 2012 conference are in German though: http://www.v-r.de/de/title-0-0/musik_bezieht_stellung-1011830/ Direct link to contents: http://www.v-r.de/pdf/titel_inhaltsverzeichnis/1011830/inhalt_978-3-8471-0206-9.pdf And to the introduction by M. J. Grant - which is in English (following a German foreword): http://www.v-r.de/pdf/titel_einleitung/1011830/einleitung_978-3-8471-0206-9.pdf -
Great one indeed!

And thank YOU, too - I've got a used copy of the Zimmermann/Busoni disc in the mail (or so the vendor said, crossing fingers).

Can be found here: https://archive.org/details/ClarenceWilliamsBlueFive-TexasMoaner1924 I guess I first heard it on this LP (which is in my dad's collection): http://www.discogs.com/Louis-Armstrong-Sidney-Bechet-Louis-Armstrong-Sidney-Bechet-With-The-Clarence-Williams-Blue-Five/release/3315281 If you want it on CD, this here would be a great choice (but careful, that great series is addictive!): http://www.fremeaux.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&category_id=64&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=803&option=com_virtuemart It's also on the old 4CD set "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" - okay enough remastering I'd say, a good selection indeed, and very good notes in the rather extensive booklet.

New Blue Note (Universal) U.S. Series
king ubu replied to mjzee's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
oh yes, absolutely! -
There's also Wynton Attractive enough package I'd say, but I've probably got most of those albums I really want (Gould, Fleisher, Rubinstein, Casals, Lenny doing Gershwin, Nuria Rial, Horowitz, Staier, Hahn ... also the Huelgas and Harnoncourt/Mozart discs, both of which I've not listened to yet). A few others are tempting, but not as many as would justify buying this (the Frank Peter Zimmermann Busoni disc I might have to look for though).

Life in China and, incidentally, Kenny G

Darn those expectations anyway! But, geographically speaking, it isn't that far to North Korea either. Not expecting to find many TOCJs there. Or maybe that's where they all go and why they're so hard to find? I mean, him looking at squeeze boxes is a strong indication the regime loves jazz, isn't it? -
Thelonious Monk Late Black Lion Recordings, Post-Columbia

He used Jeffrey already before the Giants tour (the first tour that is, there were two - in 1971 and 1972) - for instance in Japan in early October 1970, with Larry Ridlley and Lennie McBrowne Arrgh - don't know what's wrong. If you search for "Monk Jeffrey" in YouTube, you'll get there right away. -

Thanks caravan! Didn't know about the hats - but yes, that one is indeed identical, I noticed! Would love to have been there, but alas, I was born too late ... -
No idea if it's legit with respect to royalties and stuff ... no idea what deal they struck, but it seems to be a good karma release - as Chuck reported previously, by the way!

Hard to say anything about the bass player, could just be his hand is in the light there. The wristwatch is barely detectable, but it *could* be the one the bassist in the video is wearing, I'd say. But caravan seems so sure as if he actually knew - that's why I'm asking! -

Why would you be so sure? Rouse wears a different suite I'd say (which obviously if it's different nights needn't mean much). -
Gave mine a first spin ... great stuff! Will have to listen a few times, but this seems indeed to be a major discovery and addition to what we know! Giuffre back to using tenor (next to the clarinet of course) and having drums with him is not just a nice change of pace (the only other 1965 recording around, from Paris, has him in trio with Barre Phillips and Don Friedman) but something we simply couldn't hear so far. Also, there's a rather thick booklet (28p) coming along with a preface by producer Zev Feldman (telling the story), various essays (Philippe Carles, Bob Blumenthal), remembrances (Juanita Giuffre, Steve Swallow, plus Jim Hall by way of a JazzTimes article and Paul Bley by way of his autobiography), and finally a conversation with George Klabin, the guy who recorded the tapes in 1965 (he runs Resonance Records, for whatever reason didn't want to release this himself). Klabin agreed to release on condition that all musicians were paid ... so I guess there's indeed nothing fishy about this release.

Happens more and more often, both from labels (sold out CDs, instead of having the entire catalogue OOP they opt for CD-Rs) or from Amazon (I just got one of Nimbus' Benny Carter four disc sets from amazon.de and it was CD-R, although the description says but "Audio CD") ... also bought CD-Rs from small classical labels, in one case they just told me it was a CD when I wrote to them to inquire ... ha! Not sure why folks that depend to at least some part on sales of this want to fool customers ... anyway, this might help some: http://www.discogs.com/help/database/submission-guidelines-release-format#CD_Versus_CDr -
same here - damn ... but he hung in there for quite some time, after all!
-
I like all three of them quite some ... though "Coldwater Flat" is the one I only just got. What does Not Dan (B.T.'s estranged cousin) think about "Elegant Soul"?
-
let me join the choir: YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! agreeing particularly re the Mulligan Quartet!

Well ... uhm, okay ... but are Ashley Kahn's books much better? I only really read the one on KoB (and parts and bits of the others) and didn't think it was much more than a - well-written - compilation of all previous knowledge about the sessions (and the ones leading up to them) and the album. Not a bad book at all, mind me, but still ... not sure what people expect to read or get to know on subjects that have been treated many a time ... I'd surely expect no revelations from any book on Blue Note (unless it was a bit more creative and invented some crap that would then be revealed a hoax )
