king ubu replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Oh, "Californication" I love! Have only seen seasons 1-3 (I think), but have those and a few more handy on DVD for binge watching. We recently re-watched the first and found it hilariously funny and entertainig again, even though some parts I remeberd line by line. -

I generally have no interest in "prison dramas", regardless of how good they are, it's just not a subject matter I find entertaining. Same here ... but then I found "Un prophète" one of the best films of recent years! And I'd not even heard of the title before, guess we might or might not get to see it over here in two years or so, if some dumbass manager thinks his performance rating might be better if he adds it to the programme. -
How to contact Sony re a problem with a boxed set?
king ubu replied to mjzee's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Well, in my case it was one disc of the huge Ciccolini box ... I'd made my way through 40 or so until there was one that was totally unplayable. Now, would I have sent that thing back, I'd have had no clue if the first 40 discs of the replacement were okay until I'd played them all again ... it's called common sense -
just stumbled over this: http://www.examiner.com/article/an-interview-with-alan-merrill-a-musical-dynasty Don't really know much by/about Aaron Sachs, some Red Norvo sides, that fun Modern Jazz Society album with John Lewis (and Tony Scott on other tracks), but mostly I just have him hidden in some larger bands.

well, this is not Sony, it's the vendors, and it always the policy of such vendors to replace the whole thing, no matter if that makes sense or not ... it how the corporate world works, I guess ... -
guess you found it, but just in case: http://www.deutschegrammophon.com/en/cat/4790441

I've got the Archiv ... have played prob. 80% of it (have a few duplications there). I found the All-Baroque box quite a bit better, but the Archiv box offers some most fascinating glimpses at the times of early (on-the-way-to-)HIP performing, and some of those remain indeed very good, I'd say - I'm stil far from an expert, but it boils down to: I can still listen to those recordings and get plenty of enjoyment out of them, no matter if I'm familiar with later, more "correct" performances. Also of course it does contain a few things of more recent vintage, but for that, I'd say get the All-Baroque if you don't have it yet (these two, in most cases, omit duplication pretty well - meaning some works are in both, of course, but in different recordings). These are others that never quite took enough of a price plunge to spare me from being ripped off by post/customs, and I was even crazy enough to get the Baroque one in a local store ... but I've certainly not regretted buying either of them (with the Baroque as well, I guess I've still got about 20% that I've never yet listened, while other things I've played several times and love very much ... i.e. still my favourite of Monteverdi's "Orfeo" ...)

Only have the Bach box by Gould (OOP too, it seems) ... the Glenn Gould Edition that was comprised of various volumes mostly split by composers works fine for me, as far as his other recordings are concerned. Still lots to explore there ... but I'd definitely be tempted if his complete jackets collection would make a return! Yes ... I've got a threshold related to the custom fees (which kick in as soon as I have to pay VAT - the fees are in the worst case 3.5 times as expensive as the minimal VAT value), so often I'm hoping prices fall below that value (which is roughly at 50 € or exactly at 62 CHF). This has so far paid off pretty well, but it might happen that I miss something because I keep waiting. The really big boxes - Heifetz, Rubinstein, Gould/Bach, Toscanini, Furtwängler are ones I got, the Horowitz (both jackets and Carnegie), Perahia or Reiner would be others I won't get - will never go below that of course. Very often though, patience "helps" ... the Vivarte box, the Henze DG box, the Richter solo box and a few others I'd been eyeing for weeks or more often months eventually did go for less. One of the craziest was the Baroque Opera box - that pre-order price was indeed cheap! Haven't explored its contents at all yet, though, I need lots and lots of time to digest operas.
-
But I guess such second pressings won't really last all that long either, so either way, it's buy now or miss. Not sure for instance about the status of the Reiner box ... released in October, currently gone, but amazon.com says "in stock June 11", so it might not be gone for good just yet (but I'm not in the market for it). With some of the recent Universal (Italy) boxes, it seems they printed limited runs, which were sold out very soon, sometimes on the actual release date or just days later, but then they were back a few weeks later and you could pre-order them. Guess they're testing the waters to see how many units they can still sell.
-
I guess it was re-pressed, as was the Heifetz box? amazon.it says it will be around from tomorrow (but their price is much higher), on .fr or .com all you get are resellers ... so not sure, but actually I assumed it was back, but I wouldn't really know.

It's Virginia Woolf, four tracks of which are not on the Mosaic (all of Hobo Flats is on the Mosaic, so you can skip that one). It's been a while since I played it, but I recall John Brown's Body is worth having. I'm happy I bought it. Got that one in the meantime - much belated thanks! Oh yes, great album!
-
Thanks! Definitely got enough then ... ten plus discs from each label, and those are filled up, unlike those in the big box. Not much interest in the Carnegie box either, can take some Horowitz every now and then (and love some of it a lot!), but unlike other artist's monster boxes, I don't feel this one's for me.
-
Silly question maybe, but this is Columbia + RCA, right? Anway, I've already got more Horowitz than I really need (including one of his two 10 CD original jacket sets - the one covering RCA material).
-
Ha ha! They still stage great concerts there and I try and attend whenever I can! In the 80s, of course, it was the center of youth (counter-)culture and probably the only semi-official place where they could meet and hear their music without having to do so illegally/privately. Nowadays, they are a fix part of the town's cultural life (though the right/conservative politicians always try and cut subsidies, they still seem to hate, probably most of them were around in the 80s already and remain in their ideological trenches). Some draw only a few elderly folks (and I often feel like I'm still the youngest guy, after 15 years of going there), but others draw many young people and you never can quite tell in advance which will be the case.

How to contact Sony re a problem with a boxed set?

I got in touch with Sony Classical Germany twice ... there seems to be no equivalent over here, but I got most kind replies (and got the correct replacement disc for the Toscanini shoebox shipped within a few weeks after my first inquiry, which was about that disc ... folks in the local shoppe where I bought it had of course never heard of the error). This may just be the one guy working there though ... you never really know. Had a few nice exchanges with EMI folks too (they sent me missing recording date infos for some of their UK jumbo boxes, the "Collector's Editions" by Elgar and Vaughan Williams). So in my experience, there still are some actual human beings around, kind ones, too! - and hence it pays off to try (though of course I've no idea if the archivist at EMI's is still around, now that it's Warner, corporations tend to fire those that aren't "generating revenue" and such crap, so ...) Both times I used whatever contact option I found on the websites ... just thought I'd give it a shot. -
Nicest ones I met in person and had chats with: John Tchicai Rhoda Scott Irène Schweizer also the entire Convergence Quartet (hey Alex, I see you're in this thread right now!)

Those impossibly expensive disposable razor cartridges

9$? A Mach 3 package here costs around 30$ (not sure how many in there, 10 or 15 - but still plenty of empty cardboard suggesting more). -
Roy Hargrove in Trouble

So would they still lock him up for 20 years or so? The way they did with Frank Morgan, Dexter Gordon, Teddy Edwards, Art Pepper ... sure drugs suck and sure they don't do damage exclusively to those that consume them, but ... various sets of morals on display. -
