the seven bar ballad on the very good "Further Explorations" album
-
I think I first heard him on a compilation of some of Mingus' Candid sides, "Mysterious Blues" and several more from that session were on it (the infectuous "Wrap Your Troubles in Dream", "R & R" and "Body and Soul", too, I think) - he immediately fascinated me with his intense, honest playing that seemed to fit very well next to those other tracks with Eric Dolphy! Back then I was clueless about anything pre Bird, so it took me a while to catch up. The Vogue recordings were among the next ones I heard, I think ... then some of the Verve material, leader and sideman w/Pres. One of his finest from later on, recommended by some of the good folks here when I looked into Master Jazz Recordgins a bit: Fine band with Budd Johnson on tenor As for Vogue, there are two discs around - I think just one is in the little box: Vol. 1: http://www.allmusic.com/album/roy-eldridge-his-little-jazz-vol-1-mw0000065062 Vol. 2: http://www.allmusic.com/album/roy-eldridge-his-little-jazz-vol-2-mw0000346589

Alex Ross of the New Yorker is, at times, an idiot

How about Adorno? He might suck, but ingenuously so -
So much wonderful music left behind ... thank you for all, Mr. Silver!

Sadik Hakim Trio - Witches, Goblins, Etc. (Steeplechase)
king ubu replied to soulpope's topic in Recommendations
It's been a while since I've played it ... guess it falls into the "good not great" category. But as there isn't exactly a lot of Hakim, I'd say it's worth it! -
jazzmessengers has a few of those for € 7.99 right now: http://www.jazzmessengers.com/en/3064-tcb-swiss-radio-days-at-799 Mulligan CJB, Jones/Lewis (some badass JoeHen!) and Adderley come with hightest recommendation, further the Basies are very much worth getting, too .... With others (Q, Mulligan Quartet, Blakey, Hamp) I guess it depends how much you already have/need by those groups. The Hawkins I've not played all that often yet, would have to re-visit (same for the Goodman). The Clayton, Ella/Peterson and Terry are all good but not great ... the one that I found a bit of a let-down (but that applies to the band in general, don't think the other disc on Steeplechase is much better) is the Don Redman. Lots of promise (Don Byas!), but somehow it's all not that terribly good.

I think it's only transatlantic shipping that got much more expensive - within Europe, nothing much seems to change. The Baroque box has never been that cheap, I think - a real bargain for a wonderful set (provided you don't have much overlap). The only letdown is the booklet - no notes on idividual discs/works, but then at that price, and there's always the internets to read up more if needed - and of course for old folks such as us, there's books, too . I went for the Lenny and Living Stereo boxes ...

The Vivarte box goes for a pretty nice price too (€ 54): http://www.amazon.it/Vivarte-Collection-Abraham-Van-Kerckhoven/dp/B00AOTZ156/ And so does the *great* All-Baroque Box from DG (€ 62): http://www.amazon.it/The-All-Baroque-Various-Artists/dp/B008BP1LS6/ Henze for € 51: http://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B00ECTZJXI/ Boulez for € 40: http://www.amazon.it/Complete-Works-Ltd-Pierre-Boulez/dp/B00BLDHPZS/ Philips Original Jackets for € 60: http://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B0091HVMVO/ Crazy! The Vivarte has been even cheaper now and then though, but still ... never saw the All-Baroque even remotely close to that price range and I really love that one!

55€ for the Living Stereo Collection @ amazon.it damn ... there's enough Reiner, Munch and Monteux in there to make it most tempting even though I have all the Heifetz and Rubinstein ...
-
Leonard Bernstein - The Symphony Edition - € 53.90 @ amazon.it 44€ on check out - that's plain ridiculous! Is this on the way out? The Günter Wand Edition has also taken a price drop (€ 38.90 at amazon.it) Also it seems Sony is re-pressing the Gould Bach box: http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/Johann-Sebastian-Bach-1685-1750-Glenn-Gould-Bach-Edition/hnum/2750965

How to contact Sony re a problem with a boxed set?
king ubu replied to mjzee's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Not with the Toscanini box. I got the correct disc in the mail. With the Ciccolini box (one disc visually perfect but unplayable) I got a second copy and after telling them (big evil a) how much the return would cost (about the same as I'd paid), I was told to keep it. The Meyer box (one disc missing) I did return - and had a rather hard time getting reimbursed for the by comparison again ridiculously high shipping costs ... hope that was my share of defective/incomplete boxes for a while ... -
Who's behind that? "The Long Field"? c'mon ... is this legit? Guess indeed it's final then that we'll never, ever get a reissue proper. Too bad.

Orange Is The New Black - Season 2 Underway
king ubu replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Oh, "Californication" I love! Have only seen seasons 1-3 (I think), but have those and a few more handy on DVD for binge watching. We recently re-watched the first and found it hilariously funny and entertainig again, even though some parts I remeberd line by line. -

I generally have no interest in "prison dramas", regardless of how good they are, it's just not a subject matter I find entertaining. Same here ... but then I found "Un prophète" one of the best films of recent years! And I'd not even heard of the title before, guess we might or might not get to see it over here in two years or so, if some dumbass manager thinks his performance rating might be better if he adds it to the programme. -

king ubu replied to mjzee's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Well, in my case it was one disc of the huge Ciccolini box ... I'd made my way through 40 or so until there was one that was totally unplayable. Now, would I have sent that thing back, I'd have had no clue if the first 40 discs of the replacement were okay until I'd played them all again ... it's called common sense -
just stumbled over this: http://www.examiner.com/article/an-interview-with-alan-merrill-a-musical-dynasty Don't really know much by/about Aaron Sachs, some Red Norvo sides, that fun Modern Jazz Society album with John Lewis (and Tony Scott on other tracks), but mostly I just have him hidden in some larger bands.

well, this is not Sony, it's the vendors, and it always the policy of such vendors to replace the whole thing, no matter if that makes sense or not ... it how the corporate world works, I guess ... -

I've got the Archiv ... have played prob. 80% of it (have a few duplications there). I found the All-Baroque box quite a bit better, but the Archiv box offers some most fascinating glimpses at the times of early (on-the-way-to-)HIP performing, and some of those remain indeed very good, I'd say - I'm stil far from an expert, but it boils down to: I can still listen to those recordings and get plenty of enjoyment out of them, no matter if I'm familiar with later, more "correct" performances. Also of course it does contain a few things of more recent vintage, but for that, I'd say get the All-Baroque if you don't have it yet (these two, in most cases, omit duplication pretty well - meaning some works are in both, of course, but in different recordings). These are others that never quite took enough of a price plunge to spare me from being ripped off by post/customs, and I was even crazy enough to get the Baroque one in a local store ... but I've certainly not regretted buying either of them (with the Baroque as well, I guess I've still got about 20% that I've never yet listened, while other things I've played several times and love very much ... i.e. still my favourite of Monteverdi's "Orfeo" ...)
