"Homecoming" for one is essential Dexter. I've got the old double disc edition and the double LP (missing two tracks later added on CD) - not sure if the box contains a remastered version. There's a thread about "Sophisticated Giant" somewhere ... the quartet w/Cables is terrific, and the jams with Griffin are fun - guess that about sells it.

Check the South African Jazz thread for lots of recommendations and comments! But no matter what, get "Very Urgent" - and next, get the first two Brotherhood of Breath ("Brotherhood of Breath" & "Brotherhood", reissued by Fledg'ling, same label that did "Very Urgent" and "Up to Earth") albums if you don't already have them! And don't forget the Berlin 1971 concert ("Eclipse at Dawn", Cuneiform), sans Mongezi, but really, the band is on fire! You might also consider the Blue Notes box on Ogun ... and if you haven't done so yet, you might just as well check out some more recent recordings by Moholo, including the mighty good duo album with Alexander Hawkins! And don't forget Harry Miller ... oh, and the second (blue cover) of Ogun's "archival" releases by the Blue Notes is absolutely wonderful (I'm a bit less enchanted by the first, red one, with Frank Wright going apeshit ... but that might be because my CD has been scratched/damaged beyond repair by - probably - some dust inside of the silly plastic sleeves ... I've since started replacing them with papersleeves immediately, the plastic ones tend to fall apart eventually I guess that's how dust might creep in there ... sucks for such a quality label, but at least it only happened once).

discs 9-12 in the past hours, more to come - disc 7, I think (the piano one), and the rest tomorrow .... great box!

Whoah! Costs like ten percent of what I paid (not quite, but you get the idea) for the separate releases. What I've heard (about half of it, I think) sounded wonderful to me!

extremely tempting ... but then I have the small "Intégrale des album originaux" .. hm ... Same here. However, I've had the box in my hands and it looks terrific (10-inch square, IIRC). And although it's probably not the best way to judge this, I've listened to some mp3 and the sound is better to my ears. Of course there are complaints about this not being really complete and all that, but still... F definitely looks like a wonderful box ... actually I've noticed it (at full price) some days ago and was tempted, so this is a no-brainer, really (and I guess I know a friend who'd be very happy to get the other one) thanks for the alert!

He was double her age when they met ... love the films they made together! She had a long life ... and had some great parts late in her career too (such as in Lars von Trier's "Dogville" - she was pretty darn great there, I found).

Some nice surprises here ... my taste has changed so much so in the meantime (since my last listen a few years ago) that I really enjoy the Ramparts Street Paraders this time. Matlock/Miller are mighty good (I've had a soft spot for Miller for a long time though, ever since first hearing him on the Classic Capitol set by Mosaic) and there's some pretty good stuff by others, too - George van Eps most notably (i.e. Monday Date). Still not that big on Dorsey, I'm afraid ... but I remembered the more than two discs of Ramparts as the least interesting segment of the box and it's a pleasant surprise to listen to it again! That dude on bass sax has some nice spots, too - never really noticed his name, Joe Rushton.

Played the "Master Jazz Piano" box in the morning - some very good stuff there! Maybe not much that is outstanding, but I really enjoy most of what's on it! Now:

Making my way through this for the first time right now - and enjoying the sh*t out of it! However, I wonder about the contents ... several discs/sessions are licensed from other labels (the original material I assume is being treated as PD) but no infos about actual original releases are given, just labels. I don't have time to piece it all together, but maybe someone has already done some closer investigation (or knows all the stuff included in the box inside out) and can help? it's my only Richie Cole ... ugly cover, lovely music he can be heard to good effect on some of those steaming hot Buddy Rich big band albums on Pacific Jazz (he was on board 1969/70 I think - at least that's when he was on records) also he made some records with Red Rodney - I've got some of that on one of those Camden 2CD sets from the 90s, not played often yet though ...
