  1. Thanks! As I said, I found no info on the source of the photos, so they are indeed misleading! Johnson, in the line-up given, is indeed the only bassist listed. And that does confirm aural evidence. And yes, I found sound excellent as well - much better than I dared to expect for sure! No reason no to get this because of bad sound, I'd say (but I'm pretty tolerant in that respect, after all). As for the "turbulence" ... there's much less of that than I expected. Really, Coltrane is magisterial and he seems firmly rooted and at peace with himself here. Sure, there's Sanders going bonkers as usual, but overall, I found the entire thing pretty ... solemn? Beautiful for sure, strong and beautiful. A stunning release!
  2. out of print and german, but pretty good overview in this: Möller, Horst: Exodus der Kultur. Schriftsteller, Wissenschaftler und Künstler in der Emigration nach 1933. Beck'sche schwarze Reihe; Band 293. München: Beck, 1984.
  3. Austrian white wine ... my preferred beverage besides tap water and espresso these days.
  4. Ordered the Shaw and added the Clooney to make sense shipping-wise (of course because I want it, not just to pay 5$ for shipping )
  5. Interesting ... and not quite how it feels on record - but then a record rarely delivers the same picture (wanted to say "true" picture, but I guess that depends).
  6. Not anymore - CDN$ 149.98 now. Over here, it seems JPC is currently best (amazon.it and .fr don't list a price yet, .de is ridiculous): https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/poprock/detail/-/art/dylan-bob-the-band-the-basement-tapes-complete-the-bootleg-series-vo/hnum/5935833 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Basement-Tapes-Complete-Bootleg-Deluxe/dp/B00MXILU3S/ http://www.amazon.de/Basement-Tapes-Complete-Bootleg-Deluxe/dp/B00MXILU3S/
  7. Will at least get the Kalaparusha and "Third World/Underground" ones! (Actually wanted to order them last night ... only then realized they will only be out in weeks.)
  8. Serious question: could you (or others who describe the live event) "feel" the bass? Or did Elvin's and Rashied's (and Jack's) bass drums took care of that, too?
  9. I thought the same last night, indeed! But what with Wild's entry? Guess if Garrison would have been there, the solo spot would have been his - or it would have turned into a bass duet?
  10. What now 'bout this? CD booklet does not list Garrison, but the Wild entry does. Who's playing? And where are the photos from that are in the booklet? One shows two bassists, the other might just be croppred too much (by the photographer, not the layout person, I think) to not show the other bass player, seems to be taken at the same venue. Are those from the actual concert? No info to be found in the booklet about this. Seems like there are some quality control issues at Resonance/Impulse/Vivendi/wherever. But then, what's most important: first spin last night - and WHOAH! Very, very good stuff! GREAT release, for sure! :tup (I couldn't tell if there's one or two bassists ... was listening late night at rather low volume, will have to listen again very soon though, maybe on headphones.)
  11. yep, just heard about it elsewhere - terrific news!
  12. Ha, that thought about the librettos ... had that, too. They'd be in the DG box as well, but contrary to the Janowski Ring, that one mostly contains recordings I'm not interested in. As for other upcoming stuff, just stumbled over this one: No info around yet, it seems, but while I love Tebaldi, having the Decca Puccini operas box, I don't think I'll be buying this one (unless the price takes a substantial drop, that is). This has probably been mentioned, but the Reiner box is back again as well. Never considered it with any seriosity myself, though.
  13. Well, Blue Notes are around, though mostly in Carrère pressings that are overpriced (I think, assuming they're not that very good). But I rarely ever see any Argo or Cadet LPs around, even less those twofers. One I did find - but it wasn't a bargain - was "Playin' for Keeps" by Bunky Green. That one I found at a specialised jazz/oldies store which buys up collections etc.
  14. Oh, I'd buy that Ammons in a second if I saw it! Weird, but it's been my experience for quite some time that distribution of jazz in Switzerland sucks and is somewhat erratic (and second hand market of old stuff is connected to distribution of stuff before the days when everybody started to import their own stuff, alas). There's to my knowledge just one company importing jazz, so if they don't carry a label, you won't find it in stores (unless the owners import on their own, which is shady business with all the restrictive rules and monopolies around here).
  15. Thanks for all the additional insight re: Argo/Cadeet twofers! Guess they didn't have international distribution to a degree comparable to Impulse/MCA or Fantasy (I've seen many of those around here, but as I said, was totally unawarre of Argo/Chess ones' mere existence!) Those Burrell bonus tracks would be the ones added to the GRP CD reissue but deleted again in the silly "Originals" series disc (which is, alas, all I have)?
  16. There was a two-fer issued with the same name: Oh, I wasn't aware of any Argo vinyl twofers! Never saw one so far!
  17. Love both "Zoot" albums! And the second Stitt Argo is tasty indeed! (But the one with Harris ain't half bad, either.) But in the above listing, why is "Inter-Action" suddenly the same as the Argo "Zoot"? Something fishy there. "Inter-action" was reissued fairly recently in Japan and I bought it. Pretty good one, but not great, I'd say. Still miss a complete edition of the album w/Green, so I'm holding on to the compilation "How High the Moon" (the one in the starting post) for the time being (there's a Gambit issue, I think, of the Green albums - don't know the other one w/Bunky that's on it at all yet).
  18. Not really: http://www.amazon.fr/gp/aw/d/B000E0W3F And: http://www.amazon.fr/gp/aw/d/B000CRQZN
  19. Belated best wishes, Tom!
  20. Got my Brel box early in the morning ... the mail man must have thought I was an insomniac - was working until 4 a.m. (for a paper I had to hand in at 9 a.m.) and he rang at 7:30 or so, I wasn't dressed yet and was of course not quite awake either ... but anyway, the box looks gorgeous indeed! Silly way to store the CDs (on top, in "slots" in the thick cardboard, similar to the Hip-O-Select 7-inch-boxes, but here, it's two discs per page), so the box is bloated, but flipping through the booklet it seems it's indeed a nice presentation! Lots of photos and all the relevant info at the back, no liner notes proper, rather a montage of many Brel quotes taken from a variety of interviews. And with the booklet, there's also an enveloppe with some replicas of memorabilia: Brel's pilot license etc. I have no. 09845 - how many would there be? 10 or 20 thousand?
  21. this is the label: http://rankrecords.net no more traces of anything jazz on their website - they did "Alabama Feeling" and "Paris, Ariès" and since, I think the more jazz-oriented one of the two guys that founded the label, has left - so no matter if Wadud has died, I think chances are low.
  22. Very good points indeed, Alex!
  23. The Jazz Crusaders is mighty good! Didn't quite know what to expect, or rather only did via live albums - but my point of entry was some later music of theirs, after they'd dropped the "Jazz" part of their name. They're truly "together" as a band, very in the pocket groove, allowing them to do surprising stuff with such ease that you wouldn't even notice unless you really listen! The Hamp is classic of course - had some of it before, but it's wonderful to have it all in one place! And the Woody Herman is darn amazing! I already raved about it last time it came up (another of these "sales", I think?). As for the Hackett, I guess it's indeed pretty inessential, but pretty it is. (The best two albums of his Capitol tenure, I think, are the ones with Jack Teagarden - they were included in the Tea Capitol Mosaic, which I was lucky enough to find in the mean time, but there's also a Collector's thingie, what's that weird Capitol boutique label called, they were never around in yurp, but I got this one some way, some years back ... Collector's Choice?) As for the Q, that was one that also had European issue and was around at rather attractive prices here (I think I even bought it in a local shop!) - I don't play it all that often either, but it contains the classic "This Is How I Feel About Jazz", the wannabe-classic "Quintessence" (style over substance, I think, but It's been long since I've played it, Mr. Sangrey will tell me off if I'm wrong, please!) and four discs of Q's mighty good big band in the late fifties, including many wonderful musicians. There's also one jam session (I think from my 'hood, but that was long before I was born, my parents were small kids at that time - and neither of them got into jazz before the mid/late sixties) with a contingent of the full band. To me, this, together with the 1956/57 Dizzy Gillespie band (in which Q had a hand as well, of course) and the Basie NT band (again, Q was there) kind of embodies what I consider classic modern big band music. It doesn't have the excitement, the quirks, the idiosyncrasies of Jones/Lewis or Clarke/Boland, both of which I ultimately prefer ... but it's good!
  24. need the Shaw - has this been on the running low list for a while or is it a new addition? wasn't aware if it has been ...
